Rather than search through the forums, I'd rather start a fresh topic of discussion.
Does anyone use the TrackIR system, and do you like it?
-
what is it?

I've got the TrackIR2, and it feels really "natural".
It works flawlessly and you can set it up to your liking.
It seems that AH2 will natively support TrackIR2 so that it will remember the position of forward view. As it is now, in the beta, we have to use it in mouse emulation mode. That works too, but the enhanced mode is the real kick.
TrackIR was soon coined "CheatIR" in the IL-2 BBS, it really is that good!
I say just go buy it!

TrackIR website (http://www.trackir.com/)
It should tell you all you need to know. Also I have read where people are using it in the AH2 beta.

I watched the product video. Eh, doesn't seem to be a very comfortable system for eye/head alignment. Your eyes have to stay forward (to see the monitor) while the head turns left/right.
The idea might work if you have 3 monitors. :)
Just mho.

F4I i suspect you do not appreciate how little actual head movement is involved.
So your sitting in front of your monitor with your nose pointing straight ahead.
Point your nose at the edge of your screen and thats all you need for movement, it also has response curves you can adjust to your liking.
Believe me its totally natural movements and you forget your doing it.
But it really does need the enhanced mode being enabled in AH because even though it will work in AH1 and AH2 currently in mouse look, i find the panning is not smooth and you have to keep centring the front view.
However in IL2 where enhanced mode is available its totally smooth and always centres correctly.
In a word awesome.

I don't think I could handle flying with a Cylon warrior staring at me!

No worries, 214th....
I was commenting based on what I saw in the promotional video; didn't look too comfortable IMHO. But, you've used it; so, I'll take your word for it.

Does this allow you to replace all 360dgr viewing we now program our hat switches to give us?
-
In a word yes no further need to use any hat switches for views.
HOWEVER until Hitech if indeed he does, gets around to supporting the enhanced mode for AH i currently would not recommend it for AH use.
But for the supported sims with enhanced mode ie IL2 and IL2FB then definitely sell your granny and go buy asap.

I got a trackir2 yesterday. Using it in ah is pretty good. The only problem I found so far is that you still have to use arrow keys yet to shift your head around the cockpit.
Its definitly a lot easier to track targets using it rather than hat views.
-
I doubt that our saved head positions will be available in TrackIR kind of pan view. But you could have the ability to press the good old view keys and get your saved head position, then when you release the keys, TrackIR is back in business.
Sounds fancy? It is actually the way it works now in the beta.
All we need is enhanced mode...
-
What's enhanced mode?
And is there any way to shift your head around (like we can do with the arrow keys), or is it just yaw/pitch?
-
Just yaw/pitch...
It feels like such a wrong word:... "just"
;)
-
Aha well how about pressing your current rear quarter view "adjusted to your liking" and whilst you keep the button down the Trackir takes over and when you release button it drops back to default front view.
So yes you can still get "adjusted" views.

In Il2 FB trackIR is the way to go.
Just recently I found out I don't need to turn my head to look behind. Instead, I just look forward but move my head/body sideways. Same result, but I still have two eyes on the target ;).
