Title: Best Stunts in Aces High
Post by: Halo on November 20, 2003, 08:57:17 AM
Ever watch the Stupid Human Tricks segment of the David Letterman Show?  Or the more bizarre antics in the movie and TV series *******?  Interesting things some people do that you'd never think possible ...  or sometimes even desirable.

These personal, not institutional, pushes of the envelope are comparable to stunts in aviation.  Cyber stunts often take advantage of bugs or loopholes, which is okay since they help develop fixes.

Sometimes there is a blur whether cyber stunts can be done in real life, e.g., flying inverted through hangars (possible?) ... turning around on cv decks and taking off over the stern (possible in something like STOL plane?) ... maybe using the arresting cables as reverse slingshots (impossible?).

Aces High designers have prudently prevented any game zapping abnormalities such as ripping up a port with a kamikaze cv beaching or atomizing a hangar by selecting a Lanc and dropping its bombs inside.

I was trying a backwards cv takeoff today but lost enthusiasm after couldn't quite get my Zeke reversed.  Came close, but no prize.  But it definitely looks doable.

I remember reading about stunts like taking a C-47 to 100,000 feet or so, but that seems to be more of an accidental bug than an intentional stunt.

So now in this collective stunt thread:

What's the Best Stunt you have ever done or seen in Aces High?

(Because of the fine line between bug and stunt, don't report a bug that resulted in you accidently doing something you never intended.  Instead report the best stunt you intentionally planned and accomplished, e.g., flying a B-17 upside down through a hangar.)

The person in charge of muting and censoring thinks 'ass' without the hyphons (of course), is the worst word in the universe.

Oh! and for the stunt, that'd prolly be flying a 109G10 300 mph through a VH, inverted.. I can do it rightside-up again(after a few tries at it) , but try as i might i can't do it upside down again.

Once and only once I was able to pull through a loop and pass through the Fighter Hangar below me twice. The next rotation through the loop I tried to make it into an outside loop by rotating the plane 180° and ended up shearing the wings off my F4U-1 and played rocket boy. It was great fun and something I have never been able to do since then. Now I just impact the ground at a high angle of attack. :D

I once launched an FM2 off the waist catapult.

"What waist cat?" you say?

Well, the waist cat is the one you end up using when you begin your take-off roll and the carrier starts to turn to starboard just as you clear the tower island.  :D

Stunts ive seen:

Arados, Lancasters, B17s LANDING in carriers.

Val 'hovering' over carrier deck... thought it was lag, realized it was the pilot literally flying the plane at like 20mph over the deck..how he did that i got no clue.

Saw a Ju88 torpedo a B26 that had landed in water.

Arado using the JATO's to clog a vh full of flaks with smoke (he came in at like 10 ft off the ground).

One's ive done:

Fly P38 through BH/FH..inverted done it too.
Same as above, but 'hangar slalom' in large fields.

Landing fully loaded P38 on carrier.. approaching from the wrong side (bless fowler flaps and skid-spinning!) Was only able to do it again once.

Landed a vert-stab-less, wing-tip-less 262.

On one occassion, my 262 landed wayy too fast, ripped gear, belly hit the ground, was still about 100mph and the runway was ending...and the hill at the end of the runway was getting bigger... ruddered hard and did 180 in the ground, throttled plane's engines to max and stopped in less than a second. I felt like Babylon5 :D

How the heck do you get control after losing the vert stab?  I have spent 5 plus mins flying sideways but can't seem to stick a landing.  Am I wrong or is the whole losing vert stab badly modeled?  Doesn't  friction force the plane to straighten out?

not on single engine aircraft ... the 262 haveing 2 jet engines has not torque or slipstream....

the propeller spinning wants to make the aircraft itself spin ... the wings take care of most of this .. but the rudder and V-stab play a major role in stablizeing this effect

inverted, very slow yak, bounced on bubble top on small rolling hill. Could never duplicate, happened by accident, not even gonna try again.

Getting a pair of base vulchers to slam themselves into the immovable object. I flew a Zero on the deck over the airfield and then ducked under a Hanger. The bogies had gunsight blindness tried to just follow me and WHAM!

ive done some strange stuff...

took a b17 off a carrier
landed on city buildings (best was a lancaster on a condo...but i saw a couple people put a p51 down on a church:eek: )
someone actually took a kate of a carrier and landed it on the back of the battleship...without wind...
couple times ive survived bringing my plane down to about 5 feet off the ground...

Maneuvering a 262 without a vert stab
fighting in a 262 without wingtips(mmm, speed holes)
Doing a half a dozen b26 sorties off a cv(land, rearm, takeoff, land, rearm, etc)
Landing 262/234 on cv
Strafing flakpanzers with the 262(Those 30mms do a number on tanks!)

landing a kate/val on a bomber hangar
landing a kate/val on the cruiser
(Using wind is cheating!)

Taking a c47 over 27k(and then to 49k), and fighting 163's over enemy HQ's.

Once had a tiger sortie where 4 of my 8 kills were aircraft trying to strafe me, all killed with the main gun.

You manouver stab-less 262's by controlling the throttle on each engine..its nerve wrecking.

And yes, 262's on ground attack is awesome. At times my 262 has been the only plane to get to a vulched field where an M3 is close to town, surrounded by flaks and high la7's... and all the sudden this 600mph jet comes in 50ft off the dirt and smacks the m3 with quad 20's and screams away.

Strafed a PT boat once with an Arado... spotted him from a ways off while he was sneaking up a shoreline, dove behind a ridgeline, turned off engines so I could sneak up on him at 400mph.  Zoom climbed as I passed over him and shot him with my tail guns in external view.  Took 2 passes to get him.  I could tell I surprised him on the first pass, he went crazy shooting in the air trying to find me.

A tipless 262 looks cool... batwing look.  Rolling sorta sucks though.

recently ditched a 152 with no v stab, could've landed.

heard someone succesfully did some airborne figure in one of the tanks. pretty good considering you die if you plow even a little hard on touchdown.

I hit an attacking fighter with a smoke shell from a panzer once.  Left a smoking cloud about 200 feet above the runway.

Fun stunts, keep 'em coming.

Finally managed to turn around a Zeke and take off over the back end of a carrier.

Next test will be if can engage hook and make that slingshot bug launch a planned short takeoff over the stern.  Sounds too weird, doesn't it?

But can't figure out how in the world anyone can land on a cruiser.  Where, on the bow?  The stern has zilch room and that seaplane crane in the way.

Likewise I haven't figured the trick in landing on a hangar or other building.  Approach low and slow and then pull up at the last minute to stall on the roof?

Apparently most planes can be flown through hangars (though not many inverted), but I haven't gotten a B-17 through yet.  Is that possible?

Done that twice; if I hadn't rolled the M8 with HE rounds to shoot up a town, I don't think it would have worked.

More fun, though, was the one flat-out shot-full-of-luck shot where I managed to hit an ackstarring B-17 with a 75mm HE round from a Panzer. I must have hit the fuselage dead on, because there was an explosion and nothing left but pieces. Compared to that shot, even killing the vulching TBM with an HE round is chicken feed.

Neat, Shiva.  That reminds me -- couple times I've shot down aircraft with a shore battery.  Much like skeet shooting with a deer slug.

On the subject of flying a B-17 through a hangar, better first spawn from a bomber hangar whose doors are open wide enough for the wings to pass through.

Tonight I spawned a B-17 in a hangar, went to F4 and watched the wingtips pass through the hangar walls.  That doesn't work in reverse, however.  When I taxied back into the hangar, the wingtips tore off.

I spawned there again, observed the wingtips passing through the doors again, then taxied across the field to another hangar whose doors were open enough (barely) to let the B-17 taxi through it.

Go figure.

47 kills were maneuver kills of planes i never bothered firing at. :D

Nope.  Kates do just fine on both bomber and fighter hangars in the Training Arena.  I've landed kates on all types of CV group ships.  262 carrier quals are routine on a CV.  No goofy wind settings or anything like that.

AW was fun to do little stunts.  I manged to land my P-38 inverted once and survive and my old AW4W squad, Red Dawn, used to have jeep races and try to see if we could jump our jeeps across the river using the bridge ramps.  Never managed to make it all the away across though.  The jeep was a blast in AW, wish we had one in AH.

The 163's ski works on water, yaknow. Once touched down on water and ski'd all the way onto the runway, from about D1.5 away (there was an M16 sittin on the close end of it)

Touched down a little after i could get the ski down., was outta fuel.. no flaps. I started sinking near the end, then i hit the shore and jumped about 50 feet.

Was fun!

Just tonight I bounced a rocket off a tiger and it killed a P38, which was trying to get me while I was preoccupied. I was gritting my teeth thinking the rocket might hit me and was rewarded with a kill instead. The tiger got by me of course. Thats about as stunty as I get.

I've done the kate landing on top of a hanger without wind before, can't do it again :(

Shot a p51 at 2.1k away, about 5k ft, and moving away from my panzer with the second shot. The guy accused me of cheating, lol.

I've done more stuff, but nothing thats not been said here that i can't remember...

Oh, but i have managed to fly a b17 thru a bomber hanger at about 250mph.

Learned to land a B-17 on top of the hanger at Lone Wolf...used to crack me up when all the WTF's??? starting showing up on the country channel.

My two best are going into a flat spin at 18k in a Bf110 trying to avoid a pony. Well the pony just had to try to finish me off. so as he came at me again, i pulled the triggers and *POP*, bye-bye pony.

The other happened just the other day. Was tryingto get over a ridge on Trinity. Almost didnt make it. Managed to belly bounce off the crest of the hill and over the other side where i could then put my nose down and gain speed again. I was stalled out when i bounced.

I managed to taxi over a hill in a stuka in the MA.  Was trying to clear it and just didn't have the e to keep flying.  Of course undercarriage always down, so plane just landed, taxied over top of hill and I took off again.

Having done that unintentionally, I've since used the technique to some success with goons.

First kill in AH was a P38 that flew in front of the Shore Battery as I pulled the trigger for the first time.

I was slightly surprised.

2nd best stunt was killing kappa's 262 while flying a Yak 9T. It was near 44 on Mindanao and I was down in a gully when I saw a 262 flying directly along the gully at about my 2 o'clock and 2k higher. I altered course to put him at my 3 o'clock, WEP on and hammering on the throttle, pulled vertical directly under where I guessed him to be passing (sight unseen) and loosed off 6 or so 37mm shells.

Boom! No 262 and a nice wee kill message.

Kappa didn't talk to me for about a month after that. :D
