One of my squaddies recently was blessed with al little baby girl.
Congrats again Zippatuh! :)
So far the wife and I have not been able to agree on a name for our girl..expected now in early January (C-scetion delivery and we can choose any date after January 5th).
Now, we lost one child about a year and a half ago due to complications in the pregnancy and we have been reluctant to give a name to this child out of a form of superstision. But, it seems like all will be well...we have no name.
Ideas?
-
How about one of those cool hollywood celebrity baby names? :D
Congrats on the new kid, you were hoing for a gril IIRC.
-
just a couple bits of advice
1. don't name her after anybody (too much bs. "why'd you name her after his mother and not me?")
2. pic a name people can hear, understand, and spell without having to ask you to repeat it 3 or 4 times. the cuteness of origanal names wears off long before the kid even knows their own name. then for the rest of their life it's just a pian in the prettythang
-
If I ever have another girl (hopefully not, but *if*), I always thought Elaine was a really great name.
-
Taishia
or
Shaneequa
or
Taishika
...
Well okay, those are the only three I could come up with off the top of my head.
Then I googled for both "african american girl names" and "black girl names", why was every site pr0n related?
-SW
-
Name her after yerself! You might want to check her mom to see what the probabilities are, but heck name her Curvy.:D
-
Eowyn... you live in Helm's Deep, don't you? :D
I dug out my AHCON t-shirt to get your real name... you need a 3-syllables-ending-in-A name for her; like Cynthia, or Helena, or Rebecca, or Amanda...

Five months ago my wife and I were blessed by God with a beautiful baby girl. We named her:
Savannah Grace
But then again I'm biased..
and my prayers will be with you and your family,

Congrats Curval, I'm excited for you and your wife. We just had a baby girl in May... Kenna Denise
-
When we had our first child, we wanted to pick a good name too, so I set up nameourkid.com
http://www.nameourkid.com
It has a couple of ideas people suggested and voted on.
-
Start with a list of themes you DON'T wanna use. Here's a few you might wanna avoid:
Porn
Geographical names/regions
Pop Icons
Intentionally misspelled Hip Hop adaptations of words/existing names
Heavyhanded Biblical references
Names from Fairytales
Make it simple, ambigious, dignified and then let the girl define herself from there on in. Don't comdemn her to live up to some pretentious appelation such as Britany or Shania.
If all else fails, go with Flossy or USAgirl.
-
Sorry about your earlier loss Curval, but congrats on the expected new arrival.
Having seen the original Dr. Zhivago and the new Masterpiece Theater remake, and having concluded that Julie Christie and Keira Knightley are two of the hottest females who ever walked the planet, may I suggest: Larissa
Advantages: Comes with the ready-made nickname of Lara, plus a really cool theme song for love-sick boyfriends to tip orchestras to play.
Disadvantages: distinctly Eastern European (if your last name is Corleone or O'Toole, it might be a little awkward, particularly with the balalaika music)
Anyway, enjoy upcoming fatherhood!

I disagree with Capt. Pork, and I suggest the following name:
Britney "Fofizzle" Jebadiah-Africa

You forgot St. Claire on the end.

Ive always liked the name Serena.
Derivative Selene, greek goddess of the moon, latin subroot Sereniatus (I think closest english word is 'serenity'?)
In spanish its meaning is more like 'she who brings inner peace'.
Good luck with the delivery and Congrats!

I tried to get a nordic heritage friend of mine to name his daughter Shaniquah Lebron....
He declined and named her after his grandmother.

I'm a firm believer in naming my kids after relatives. I feel it's a great way to pass down the memory of wonderful people through generations, and it's a true honor to the person for whom someone is named.

I was gonna say tracing the family tree for a name, you might even learn something about your family's history while you are at it:)
Dux mentioned Rebecca:aok
-
Whatever you do, for the love of god, do not give her a freaking hippy name (There were 10 billion kids named "Unique" last year. Do not give her a flash in the pan trendy pop-culture name (There were 10 billion girls named "Trinity" last year. And for the cripes sake do not take a common name, **** up the spelling and think it original, it's not (There were 10 billion girls named "Bryndah" last year).

I named my boy Peter after his great grandfather. Brought tears to the eyes of the WWII vet who fought in Iwo Jima. I'm incredibly proud of everything my grandfather's done in his life, and I think it's an honor to both him and my son to have them share names. Not to mention that personality-wise they're both identical -- stubborn and completely uncompromising. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Spookily before I read this post. This morning I thought about what I would suggest for a girl's name if anyone asked on this forum. I must be psychic!
Having said that I had trouble thinking of names. But if there is a bit of Irish in you how about these instead of the usual Shannon or Tara. So I fell back on my sister's and relatives names. Boring!
Aisling, pronounced Ashling and often spelt that way.
In Gaelic it means beautiful apparition or sweet vision. Which I suspect is how you'll see the child.
Or how about Niamh, pronounced Neeve, not sure what it means.
Or Sinead, pronounced shinaid.
-
Whatever you do, don't name her "Easy." :D
My favs are:
Crystal
Summer
Autumn
Janine, &
Kiley (can be spelled differently, of course).
Congratulations & good luck, btw! :aok

Cripes, I forgot one "rule" unless you are living in Ireland, Scotland or Wales, unpronouncable Gaelic names are just pretentious. ;)
IE: Boadicea (BooDIHcyah), or Tangwystl (Tangwistil)

Smurfette ???
just write down all the possibilities and toss them in a hat .
Or trace the family tree and pick out one (dont forget to look at middle names also ) :aok
-
Think of old girlfriends or other hot chicks you know (but don't tell your wife or your daughter that's what you did, of course). They always seem to have beautiful names, even if they were *****es.
Liz, Megan, Crystal, Ashley, Jennifer, and Julie are some of my favorites. Nothing fancy, but I'm not a big fan of weird names.

Paris.
But seriously, a name that she will be very comfortable with in the schoolyard.

My personal favorites:
- Judit
- Marina
- Caroline

if me and my wife were having a girl when my son was born she would have been named:
Haylie madison
ok i'm not sure how it would have been spelled but phontically it would have sounded like Hay-Lee.
I was blessed with a boy so he is infact a JR. my family is oldfasion like that.
i really wanted to name him William robert....then once its on the birth cert....i can call him Billy Bob and my wife cant do nothing about it. lol
BTW congrats....a child is truly a gift from god. Its also revenge from our parents because we end up saying all the stupid things they said "because i said so thats why" lol

Whatever you do try to break the chain of naming her after a soap opera queen. Been working with kids for 15 years and you wouldn't believe how common this is male and female names alike.
-
Any name that ends with MAW is highly recommended...:aok
-
Here are some names that I wanted to name my daughters at one time or another, but was overidden:
Gabriella
Molly
Lana
Annamarie
-
Bob
-
I've always like Nicole, but you could also use Ripsnort.
-
My wife and I were talking one night and goofing around we tried to think of what we would name our first child (whenever we have one). So we came up with a girl's name pretty quickly - Grace Mary Elizabeth. Grace after my grandmother, Mary after her aunt, Elizabeth after her mom and her middle name.
And then came the boy's name.
Her: "I like Evan."
Me: "Go stick your head in the Evan."
Her: "How about Adam?"
Me: "Up and Adam!"
Her: "Zackary?"
Me: "His name is Zack(make vomit sound) and he drives a Porsche and his father drives a Buick...."
Her: "Ok, what about Spencer?"
Me: "Hey, don't diss Spencer (get it? Dispenser?)"
So be careful with the name you choose. There are immature people out there (like me). :p

I have to agree. This is pretty common. There were entire classes with 3 or 4 Briana and Skye right around the same 2 or 3 school grade levels, with none before and none after. I'd never heard of the name Ainsley until the character on the show "West Wing" a couple seasons ago and now in the preschools there are 2 or 3 Ainsley running around. Fortunately, the Ainsley character was written out of the show after only a year or two so the impact was limited.
I've always liked the name Savannah. It sounds feminine and sufficiently tomboy-ish that the girl with that name won't be one of the sissy girls like a Brianna or Tiffany would be.
-
Ah...some names Ive always liked..
Brianna
Victoria
Ashlee
Meghan
-
I also like
ALANA or Noelle
-
I would like to suggest some girl names to stay away from:
Agnes
Phyllis
Shantrell
Paramicia
Ugga
Pimpleona
Harrietta

Not always funked. Even in Russia, it's somehow taken on a bit of a unisex application as of late. My parents, who spent the bulk of their lives behind the rusty curtain, have at least a couple female friends named Misha. I assume that number is even greater here, where people are more creative in their naming of children.
-
My wife and I both have pretty common first names. My best freind in high school also had the first name of david. Look in any phone book in any town and you will likely see a number of David Halls. We didn't want our kids to share names with 1,000,000 other Americans. In fact I was insistant that we not choose names that made the top 100 list, and prefered that they not show up on the top 1,000 list.
Anyway, if you want a name that is common, rare, or somewhere in between, it's good to look at the 1,000 most popular lists.

I've always liked the name Maria or Marie for a little girl.

Had a little girl back in March we named her:
Abigail Taylor
the other one we considered:
Sydney Marie

Wow..this got alot more replies than expected.
First off...lol to Funked. I knowest all those names...gee wonder why. ..and fergetaboutit. :D
Tarmac...no way can I name her after an ex-girlfriend. Way too...umm...yuck. ;)
Bryana I knida like...and some of the others will be looked at too.
DMF - I agree with you about the family name thing. My oldest is actually named after his grandfather on my wife's side...his name is Tru...but we anglicized it to Trew. My youngest is named Sam...my father's initials.
Trouble is I don't really like any of the female names on either side of our family.
Thanks for the responses all...keep 'em coming.

Surely all teenagers do that;)
Ah poor Sinead O'Connor. She's a priest now you know of her own bizarre religion.
This really is a day for names. The local paper listed the most popular names in Ireland at the moment. Jack and Sarah. I'm not suggesting Jack. But how about Jacqueline as in Bouvier Kennedy to be topical or like Jackie Brown the Tarantino movie.
Other Irish names that come to mind are: Ciara or Kira, Roisin, Caitlin or Caoimhe pron. Keeveh

My only advice is if you don't agree on a name, work it out before the due date. We didn't...
and trust me, after seeing her go through 14 hours of labor, you will let her name the baby whatever the heck she wants to.
-
Curval, we used a system with my wife which worked out very well for us. however with scheduled c-section it might not do for you. Anyway.. here is how it went..
WE picked 5 boy names and 2 girl names we kinda "agreed" on, but we couldn't decide on one.
I made a list in excel looked like that:
Date, boy name, girl name
and names were pasted in as dates progressed. Boy names repeated every 5 days, girls every 2, you get the picture.
Then we printed it out, sealed it in the envelope and taped it to the door :)
When we scrambled to the hostpital we took envelope with us, and opened it 2 minutes after out daughter was born.
Her name is Bogna. It's a traditional polish name.
We're very pleased and neither of us can blame the other for "getting his/her way".
Your milage may vary :D
-
My wife and I named our Daughter Anastasia.
We were both Russian Linguists, and I guess the names just stuck with us.
I'm a big fan of Tatyana and Natasha as well.

You're not naming her after the ex, she would just happen to have the same name. ;)
Hot chicks you know are an excellent source of hot names.
-
Also on our short list was Isabella.

-
I've always liked my name.... :) No, not Flossy. Helen. :D
-
Always been partial to Caroline.
-
Suggestions from, gasp, a lady. ;)
Seneca
Dierdre
Fiona
Kara
Morgan
Amber
Victoria (nickname Tori, not Vicky!)
And, that's all from me for now.
-
Call her Dora Nine :D
-
How about......SALLY ?
-
I think you should avoid any name that is trendy (definition of trendy one that has been used by a major soap opera star or sitcom), one that has a weird spelling (look how clever my parents were they named me Kristie Christie Christy Kristy etc etc). The name should be beautiful but not common. A name that evokes a nice image when you say it and one that is inherently easy to spell but that is not common.
There really is only one name that meets all these criteria.
Colleen.
-
I got 2 girls,
Shelby and Tylar
If we have another (girl) I like Molly :aok
-
I always liked Brooke and Hayley. My wife thought they were too common so she came up with 'Brooklyn'.
-
Mary Ann or Ginger.
Janet or Chrissy.
Jeanie.
Gidget.
And I refuse to reveal my sources.
-
You called her Brooklyn? For real?
I hope you gave here a nice normal middle name.

We have finally decided on a name:
Cassey Lyn
Cassey has no real meaning in terms of family members, Lyn is the short form of Marilyn, which was my mother's name.
C-section scheduled for January 21st now.
Two weeks. ;)
-
How is it pronounced? I hope not like "vaseline".
Why whould you schedule a C-section? What's wrong with having a baby arrove when she is ready to?

miko
No, not like Vaseline. :)
Two reasons for C-Section:
1. My wife was in labour (real screaming painful labour) for almost 21 hours with the first baby. You are welcome to try and convince her to have a natural child birth after that...I won't even bring it up...she starts to turn green and grow very large and menacing.
2. Her placenta has dropped a bit. She actually cannot have a natural childbirth as a result. She is under doctors orders to have a C-Section, which makes point 1 moot.
-
I chose "Ann-Christine" to my lovely daughter, but as usual, wife will step over ya and mine chose "Sara" (not "Sarah"), which I found pretty good too. So now my daughter name is Sara Ann-Christine...

oh, btw one of the best names I've heard is one of my ex-girl friends: "Henna".

Curval: Two reasons for C-Section:...
I actually was wondering why whould you schedule a C-section?
There may be good very reasons to have a C-section - like yours, though in about 9 out of 10 times it is currently performed it is not medically necesarry.
There is only a couple of good medical reasons to induce/schedule birth - be it a normal delivery or a C-section. That's when the baby or a mother is experiencing a distress and/or is overdue by over two weeks. Obviously, you cannnot know so far in advance if your baby will be experiencing distress.
From my experience, the most common reason to schedule birth is so that a primary doctor would make his money without a risk to his golf schedule.
Yours may differ, and you do not sound like a person who would do such a serious thing without consideration, so that's why I was curious.
miko
-
I guess a C-section is a "Césarienne" ? (or a caesarsomthing for you ?)
Btw I do find that "Cassey Lyn" sound like caséine ;)
-
I've always liked the name Nadine (hope).
-
^ A lot of cool names, foreign-sounding names - even russian-derived names - are considered "ethnic black" in USA.
So a white person is not advised to select such name for his child. It creates wrong impression of cultural belonging and may often hurt the career.

There is a girl at work named Jerico (I think that is how it is spelled)... I thought that was kind of a cool name.
Caroline is a good girls name too.

Well, I may be a dad before the actual sceduled "event".
Just got a call from the wife who was in for an ultra-sound. As the technician was doing her work she noticed a contraction and asked the wife whether she was sure she wasn't in labour.
She has been feeling some occassional contractions since...but her water hasn't broken or anything.

I have to agree with this one. My oldest son is named after me but we call him by his middle name of Parrish...There are to many Will's and William's in this area. Our newest little boy who will be 1 year on May 29th is named Sims Hudson which is the last name of my wife's grandmothers. We call him Sims. Our next child will be named Tucker Layne...In honor of my great grandfather Tucker and my uncle Layne who is in the final stages of full blown AIDS and likely will not see another year.

Knock yourself out...or if you're a Kipling fan, a man who wrote about soldiers...
WHEN I left Rome for Lalage’s sake
By the Legions’ Road to Rimini,
She vowed her heart was mine to take
With me and my shield to Rimini—
(Till the Eagles flew from Rimini—)
And I’ve tramped Britain, and I’ve tramped Gaul,
And the Pontic shore where the snow-flakes fall
As white as the neck of Lalage—
(As cold as the heart of Lalage!)
And I’ve lost Britain, and I’ve lost Gaul,
And I’ve lost Rome and, worst of all,
I’ve lost Lalage!
When you go by the Via Aurelia,
As thousands have travelled before,
Remember the Luck of the Soldier
Who never saw Rome any more!
Oh dear was the sweetheart that kissed him
And dear was the mother that bore,
But his shield was picked up in the heather
And he never saw Rome any more!
And he left Rome for Lalage’s sake,
By the Legions’ Road to Rimini,
She vowed her heart was mine to take
With me and my shield to Rimini—
(Till the Eagles flew from Rimini—)
And I’ve tramped Britain, and I’ve tramped Gaul,
And the Pontic shore where the snow-flakes fall
As white as the neck of Lalage—
(As cold as the heart of Lalage!)
And I’ve lost Britain, and I’ve lost Gaul,
And I’ve lost Rome and, worst of all,
I’ve lost Lalage!
When you go by the Via Aurelia
That runs from the City to Gaul,
Remember the Luck of the Soldier
Who rose to be master of all!
He carried the sword and the buckler,
He mounted his guard on the Wall,
Till the Legions elected him Cæsar,
And he rose to be master of all!
And he left Rome for Lalage’s sake,
By the Legions’ Road to Rimini,
She vowed her heart was mine to take
With me and my shield to Rimini—
(Till the Eagles flew from Rimini—)
And I’ve tramped Britain, and I’ve tramped Gaul,
And the Pontic shore where the snow-flakes fall
As white as the neck of Lalage—
(As cold as the heart of Lalage!)
And I’ve lost Britain, and I’ve lost Gaul,
And I’ve lost Rome and, worst of all,
I’ve lost Lalage!
It’s twenty-five marches to Narbo,
It’s forty-five more up the Rhone,
And the end may be death in the heather
Or life on an Emperor’s throne.
But whether the Eagles obey us,
Or we go to the Ravens—alone,
I’d sooner be Lalage’s lover
Than sit on an Emperor’s throne!
We’ve all left Rome for Lalage’s sake,
By the Legions’ Road to Rimini,
She vowed her heart was mine to take
With me and my shield to Rimini—
(Till the Eagles flew from Rimini—)
And I’ve tramped Britain, and I’ve tramped Gaul,
And the Pontic shore where the snow-flakes fall
As white as the neck of Lalage—
(As cold as the heart of Lalage!)
And I’ve lost Britain, and I’ve lost Gaul,
And I’ve lost Rome and, worst of all,
I’ve lost Lalage!
