I was considering firing up old OFP as well as going out and getting OFPR. I was just wondering if anyone still played alot? If not whats the new tatical game out there?
-
I still have it, but when I got a new CD-rom, I left the CD in the old one too lazy to plug it to the powersupply to take it out. lol. Never played it online much, always hard to find a a server that would let me in. I can fire it up and play some games if you want too though.

Hey Beefy!
There is a booming OFP community here: http://www.tacticalgamer.com
It's pay-for-play but IMHO you get your money's worth. Real anal-retentive stuff like our old 308 scenario missions. :)
-
I still play OFP, I never finished the campaign because I got the tanks and couldn't bear the fact that the AI never followed my orders when I was commander.
I'd order "Forward", then it seemed as if the driver had a case of ADD and an overwhelming amount of incompetence. Go forward an inch, then stop and start moving left. Man it got SO irritating.
I finally got through those missions (after months of not bothering with the campaign) and am now at the mission Pathfinder (I think thats the name).
Every motherf***ing time, the ENTIRE squad gets taken out by a SINGLE f***ing grenade. Then I'm left running around picking up the LAW and the M16 + M203 trying to take out the ZSUs for the Cobras, and end up getting destroyed by the two or three squads of uber commie AI running around. I got so pissed off at those dumb *******s last night I had to go outside and hit rocks with my aluminum baseball bat until one broke it in half. Then I got pissed off at that and went buckwild on a tree stump.
I did, however, sleep like a baby.

Amen to that. Them mother ****ers never listened me.
I didnt bother with OFPR. I dont need a sequal to that level of frustration.
Ghost recon was better online so I rarely played OFP online.
-
Yeah. I play it. Right now, I'm away from my PC for another week.
To be honest, I spend more time scripting for it than actually playing it.
OFP:R has a bunch of impovements over the original, and part of that is in the online code. Nevertheless, it does have its issues. Part of this is the sheer scope of the thing. When you get an online engagement involving 100 human and AI infantry units, with artillery, armor and air support all blasting away, and you're using a standard MP structure (= not MMP), you will experience problems on a 56k connection.
And yeah, commanding AI tank units can be a bit of a pain in the ass. Come to think of it, the AI command system could be a helluva lot better if it followed some simple rules about military behavior.
The community has put out some pretty impressive mods and missions.
My favorites:
SEB Nam Pack 2. This includes the Ia Trang Valley "Island", complete sets of US, NVA and VC infantry units and weapons, and some helicopters (Various types of UH-1 slicks and gunships, cobra and chinook skins).
Oh yeah, and its bundled with our AP mines
soon, rumor has it, the "Nam Pack Air Module" will come out, featuring a bunch of fixed-wing aircraft, some new effects (we traded napalm for a M101), a few fixes on the island, and other goodies.
BAS Deltas/Rangers/Blackhawks/Chinooks/LittleBirds/SOAR pilots
(http://www.ballistic-studios.com/)
Bas Tonal/Tango pack
Here you get a bunch of fancy SF gear (units and helos) and with Tonal/Tango, a huge island representing some dismal spot off of Rhodesia and a bunch of stuff to shoot at. Plus cool paint jobs on crappy russian-built equipment.
I'm also partial to my group, of course:
http://www.thechainofcommand.com/
We do all kinds of goofy stuff. The "Big Project" is the "Command Engine". I try to keep myself distant from this thing, but effectively, it allows the player to command in theory up to a battalion (assuming your computeris fast enough to handle it, which it probably isn't). Think of an FPS version of Combat Mission (uhhh... without the CM squad AI and cool grognard realism stuff). The current project involves adapting this to dialogs and multiplayer.
My little project is Unified Artillery (UA). We hobbled together a bunch of hacks to bring pretty decent artillery into OFP. I'd rattle on, but I'll save that until later. The release has four units: a m252 81mm mortar, m101 105mm howitzer, m109 paladin (155mm), and the M270 MLRS. Other units can "plug in", so I'm now working with other addon groups to bring in stuff, such as a bunch of WW2 stuff, a soviet M46 122 mm howitzer, some swedish carrier that mounts the twin-120mm advanced mortar system (AMOS). The latter, incidentally can fire in MRIS (Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact), firing up to 14 rounds at different velocities and trajectories so they all arrive on target at the same time. It's pretty impressive to get a platoon of four of them on the task. You call fire; shortly thereafter they call "SHOT" on the radio, and you hear constant rumbling in the distance. Then there's a slight pause as they switch to lob the last ones at low angle, and then "ROUNDS COMPLETE" followed by the last few reports. Then there's this singular incoming sound of the doppler on nearly sixty shells at different trajectories and velocities. Then the target area erupts in flames. Okay, I like to watch stuff blow up.
There are other projects:
Combat Divers: a rebreather system.
Network Services: a lot of backroom stuff to add MP functionality for sophisticated mission applications.
As for sophisticated mission applications: now we're seeing all kinds of weird stuff in MP. In addition to co-op missions (which I prefer), and the usual "capture the flag" and other variations on that, there are several permutations of first-person RTS missions out there. And some just weird stuff. I've seen deathmatches involving tractors and hillbillies, and a whole slew of missions involving flesh-eating zombies.
Oh, and Estes-- download the 1.94 beta patch. It doesn't need the CD to run.

hmm I was thinking of picking up the 3 in 1 game pack but after reading this thread I'll pass. Did the WW2 mods ever take off?

Yeah, there's a real impressive project going on at invasion1944. If you google it you'll have the link. They already have a large demo out on the streets and some previews of very impressive things to come.
Definately worth your money I'd say. So much high-quality mods and add-ons available and in the works.
-
I still play it, but unfortunately there's not too much online activity with the original OFP. That's why I yesterday ordered an OFP GOTY edition, which contains everything in one package.

UA rules ! wtg man !
excellent work !

There's a helluva amount of ad-ons today and I have dowloaded a bunch. The problem is that they are mostly not compatible with the original OFP and there are never warnings about that.
Edit:A little advertising: There is a Finnish Defence Forces MOD for Resistance which is rated as the best MOD to date http://koti.mbnet.fi/~fdfmod/

I dont know what they used to program AI for the tank drivers, same problem. Ok forward, tank creeps 2 feet forward, then say left. Finally my T-72 is wedged firmly in a forest. So I hop out tell the nincompoops to dismount as well, then hold a quick courtmartial and cap those two traitors to the motherland and continue on my own. Tanks are useless. helicopters would rule except for lack of stick support.

Right that's it. Time to join an OFP:R group again......
But first, Dinger, how do you get 100 human players into 1 game? I downloaded the 1.94 beta patch but the game still asks for the CD when run.
Funked, what's this group you're with and how's it all work? I looked at the FAQs on the site but they don't give away huge amounts of info. You still got that CD with all my old missions on? I had a minor HDD issue and lost all but 1.
Beef, when you've got OFP:R drop me an email.
Sunking, ignore the complaints about tanks and go buy the game, it's an extremely minor issue especially when you're playing online and all the tank drivers are human.

the Shills have been playing a lot of OFP lately, especially the MFCTI Mod and Mission (http://mfcti.sourceforge.net/). this little number is great since it opens up the playing and gives you the freedome to try whatever you prefere in a combined arms environment.
The basic object is to capture all of the towns on the island of Everon, and destroy the East's base while they are tryinig to do the same.

Yep,
Still playing (when I have time)
Check out the SES server at :http://www.gogodot.net/ofp.html

Can't you drive tanks manually from the commander position? I haven't driven one for a long time, but remember it works that way too.
-
Cool topic. I bought OPFP (last version) months ago to play the Invasion44 and other WWII mods but after a reformat I never re-installed it. I'l have to take the time to do that over this long weekend.
-
as commander you need to stop, and select "to driver's seat", then motor to your destination manually. The tank driver AI is pretty good, except for following direct orders from a human TC. The AI was trained on a neural network.
100 players in a game? I said 100 AI and human players. OFP is just a regular MP game, and best with under thirty players.
1.94 -- you're not starting it. For the 1.94 patch, you need to run FLASHPOINTBETA.EXE off of the codemasters/ofp directory.
mora, I thought the FDF was the only full on MOD (as opposed to addon) out there? I never downloaded it, partly because Keg kept making fun of our neural net targeting system while we were developing UA. ;)
Anyway, get OFP:R for the addons. Resistance gives us a lot of latitude in terms of things like eventhandlers and scripting, so most of the "cool addons", such as helos with fastroping and dust effects, are for Res.
There's lots of WW2 stuff out there, so much so that there's a WW2 RTS as well, but I just don't know.
Oh yeah, and former RAF 308 member CBFASI is still busy working on the fleet for the Falklands Mod. I wanna code the NGFS.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has to leave the house and blow off some steam when I get frustrated while gaming. :)

Swoop look in the forums, that's where all the good info is.

I would never do anything like that.

BEEF !! :)
OFPR is definitely worth it, probably Game of the year addition will be your best deal .
We dont really play OFP, we go on field problems in OFP
Does the Beef still play AH ?
-
wow Beefy is still alive out there!
I haven't fired up OFP:R in a while due to a nifty green screen and other graphical problems (occasionally). Never happened before, but it decided to kick in a few months ago. I checked the official forums for the "fix" but with no avail. Apparently, it's an ATI issue.
Tactical Gamer = pay? ... my OFP craving needs to be a lot stronger to pay at the moment :) I'm currently replaying Deus Ex for the nth time and will pick up DX: Invisible War in a few days.
I'll punt this thread when the OFP craving comes back .
-
It's building. I feel the need to field test 14-round MRSI barrages in a coop setting.
-
Fired it up yesterday, the bomberman mission is still one of the best gameplay scripts I can recal. Excellent.
Whats the fastest and best way to get into multiplayer with it?
-
Bah. Life sucks.
Payday finaly arrives and I head off to Wally-Mart only to find OFP-GoY box is gone. I saw it there not more than 2 days ago but aparently they restocked and OFP has been removed. Anyway looks like I'm going to have to order it online which means it's gonna take awhile to get here.
On to AH. I haven't really played AH much since I left. I really have no plans to return until AH2 or new content is added, flying B17 missions can be fun at times but most of the time its just dull and boing. I usually play BF1942 (and many of its mods like FH and DC), Homeworld 2, Starcraft and Warcraft 3, FFXI, PS, and some other games as well. I was hopeing PS would fullfill my need for tatical squad warfare but it failed to do that. In BF1942DC I love to fly the choppers but the flight controlls are not that great, hence where OFP comes in where I can fly choppers well and get my tatical squad combat.
Anyway gotta run, forgive the typos as I'm using one of those tiny Mac keyboards at work.
