Title: What I’ve learned from watching “Baa Baa Black Sheep”
Post by: eskimo2 on November 26, 2003, 03:34:47 PM
I’ve been watching the “Baa Baa Black Sheep” marathon on the History Channel today.
Here is what I’ve learned:

Aircraft gun range is 100 feet - maximum.
Zeros only have cowl guns.
Aircraft guns shoot at a 30 degree upward angle.
Six 50 caliber machine guns at 100 feet range will only cause a zero’s engine to smoke or catch fire.

Fights can go from 3,000 feet to 12,000 feet in 2 seconds.
Zero can easily catch Corsairs, even if they are 7,000 feet lower.
If a Corsair has a zero on its tail, it should do slow rolls and lazy Eses.  It should never dive.
If a zero has a Corsair on its tail, it should do slow rolls and lazy Eses.  It should never turn sharper than the Corsair.
If you perform a slow roll to the left to throw off your enemies aim, he will perform a slow roll to the right.
All combat between zeros and Corsairs takes place between 150 and 200 mph.

The crew needed to keep one squadron operational: 12 pilots, 2 mechanics, 6 nurses, 1 doctor and 1 cook.
1940’s hairstyles, slang and fashions were exactly the same as they were in the 1970s.

Also you learn that all the 22 year old pilots and 25 year old officers in WW2 actually appeared to be 35-45 years old.

12 pilots for 6 nurses the ratio is not that bad ... but I still prefer M.A.S.H :)

I think after all that combat 22 year olds would look a bit older!
A lot of the real Blacksheep veterans didn't like the way they were portrayed in the series either as if they were a bunch raggedy arse Marines with no discipline.

Anyway Blacksheep is realistic compared to Top Gun. I learned that the F14 couldn't detect a Mig until they were 500 feet away nor could the crew. Even though all Migs are painted black and the pilots wore sexy tinted visors.  That a sexy woman who was never in the military knew more than any combat pilot.  That a hard deck of 10,000 feet actually meant having to fly through mountain peaks at zero feet.  That all naval aviators like to play beach volleyball with oiled up bodies and hang around the locker room wearing only a towel. I could go on but I've learned enough.

Then there was Mission Impossible the TV series where I learned that most of world looked a bit like Southern California even Russia in Winter. Remarkable.

That is a very important observation. I hate how the reality of it was distorted, particularly as far as age. (I mean, we had 19 year old B-17 Bomber pilots with the lives of many others in thier hands) Every teen-age kid should know what is possible, and should know the truth. I wish it were more widely known...

edit: I have to add that I'm not bashing the genre' in US movies and TV, because I love it. Its just that I wish more kids were aware of the reality, and I don't mean just  US kids. Its pretty damn inspiring.

ROFL, Oh man, I totally forgot all about that!

Anyhow, what I learned was that the Solomons were an Island chain near the Santa Monica Mountains.

The the things I learned from that show are that Corsairs easily out turn Zeros.  All Japanese pilots spoke perfect English with American accents.  US Navy nurses liked to wear short shorts with stockings.  If you were being strafed by Zeros, all you had to do was run in a straight line and the bullets would pass along to either side of you.

Riceball always knew what frequency Boyington was on and would tease him over the radio.

Who was doing that in the old WB's Historic Area (PTO)?
I think it was around v.2.5 or so. It was some funny stuff. :)

You forgot:

- Flying with a hangover enhances your performances.
- Shooting your guns reset all your flight instrument to zero.

LOL Yeah, he cried foul cause Kaplan's team handed off a baton outside the zone during a 4x 440 relay race. He got all pissy, and then he challanged Kaplan to a 110 yard race to determine the winner... and Gabe smoked him by twenty yards. It was classic.

Riceball was classic - gotta love the old "Pappy and Riceball stranded on desert island sharing cigarettes" episode. :D

PS:  Damn - lotta Conrad haters in here.  Hey... at least the idea for the show came before Ben Afflec was born.
