P40 ?
-
yah looks alot like a p-40....exept it doesn't have the supercharger induction near the prop????......my guess is P-40 also
-
P-40 you can tell by the wingroot where the landing gear support cover.
-
Not all P-40s had the induction opening on the top of the cowling. Merlin powered P-40s had the induction opening in the radiator ducting. So is a P-40F or P-40L.

P40L-15 "Skipper" 86th Fighter Squadron, 79th Fighter Group, 12th AF, lost January 31, 1944. It was being flown by Lt. Michael Mauritz, who was forced to ditch just off the coast of Italy near Capo Partiere. Someone had stuffed a parachute into the engine cowling, causing the engine to overheat.
Recovered from the ocean on January 12, 1988 and displayed, unrestored but preserved in the "Battle of Anzio" museum at Piana delle Orme.

Guppy35, how did he 'ditch' without bending the prop blades?
-
I'd imagine the prop wasn't turning when he hit as the engine had overheated and he was deadstick. Probably hit tail first, nose came down and the scoop dug in, slowing it in a hurry. Pilot got out OK, was made a POW but escaped.

So much for a thorough pre-flight inspection....

They called it sabotage. I wonder how often that happened to units based on the ground in Italy and elsewhere. I've got the microfilm history of the 454th BG based at San Giovanni and at the back of it are a few incidents of suspected Sabotage with locals trying to damage the B24s and even one where someone tried to use one of the B24's radio to make contact with the Germans. I would have to believe that happened elsewhere too.
