To increase Aces High membership by about 20 percent and renew interest of longtime members who tend to get jaded after awhile, recommend Aces High add a new Max Arena with the following main attributes:
Allow unlimited access to all aircraft and ground vehicles, i.e., NO perks. This would have huge appeal to prospective and new members as well as many existing members.
Allow easy all-encompassing external views for all aircraft and vehicles like Spot view in Flight Simulator 2004. This would allow a new dimension of observing and filming battles in their totality as well as specifics. (And no, external views are not very helpful in actually trying to dogfight using them.)
Allow bomber air starts from 10k. This would revive the use of bombers and restore the main element of aerial victory: bombardment.
That's it. The big three.
Are there any more that should be added?
This would be the Max Arena where Aces High gets to show off its technological leadership without handicapping its features. All-out fun with no worries about artificial balancing constraints which never keep everyone happy anyway.
This is frosting on the cake, not the main course, which remains the Main Arena supplemented by Combat Theater and Dueling Arena, plus the eventual Tour of Duty.
If Max Arena turns into all jets and Tiger tanks or other all ubers, so what? We already don't see many early and mid rides in the Main Arena, but they do great in various Combat Theater scenarios.
Yes, Aces High started out much like this, and it probably wouldn't do to have it as the only arena. But it could be the ultimate supplemental arena, e.g., the consummate WWII battle with everyone choosing the latest and greatest.
Might also inspire the best pilots to show what they can do in the less than premium rides. All in all, looks like a win-win situation if Aces High has enough computing resources to add it.

Where would you put in the quarter?
Geez talk about arcade:rolleyes:

Uhhhh...I'm almost speechless. Halo's a fisherman, right? :lol

And the pilots get to show how much of a retarded dweeb they can be, right?

From a business perspective, on the outside looking in, Max Arena could be a tempting way to increase customers and revenue with virtually no redesign required.
On a given day or night, seems that rarely is 25% capacity exceeded of the 1,930 spaces in the five Aces High arenas: Main (750), Combat (200), Training (180), Dueling (200), and Special Events (600).
Seems as if it would be relatively easy to at least test a nice cash cow Max Arena by combining some spaces from the existing five arenas. Talk about a readymade focus group.
Aces High already has the best viewing from inside the cockpit. What if it added the best viewing from outside the cockpit too?
Would there be any better feeling of combat flight, more intense and versatile immersion, from any other simulator anywhere?
Arcade-ish? Dweebish? Nope, those terms apply to laser guns, assembly line targets, astronomically high scoring, cacophony, mindless tactics, meaningless strategy, predictable AI opponents, flawless vehicles, and repetition reward.
Aces High features the best elements of accurately modeled vehicles and free will of live participants. Why not test an additional Max Arena of maximum gameplay and visibility both internal and external? What is there to lose -- the additional customers we don't have and the bored ones we're losing anyway?

Why not go play FA instead?

Thanks, guys, good recommendation -- I did go play Fighter Ace. Hadn't been near that in years. But it has 109 planes now and none restricted from what I can tell.
Yeah, FA is really arcadish in the lower levels, but it has several tougher higher levels and some good eye candy. FA's F8 key external view is excellent, but needs the mouse to provide the 360-degree viewing that is so effortless and stunning in Flight Simulator 2004 using only the joystick hat.
Compared to the unlimited everything melees in lower levels of FA, adding ONE Aces High arena with optional external viewing, unperked rides, and optional bomber altitude starts would hardly qualify as arcadish.

hardly? Well lets see we would have 163's flying everywhere. Field ack dweeb that vulch people as they take off. might as well make it the arena for noobs.
btw this is my 1k post:D

i think it could work with some certain rules , btw how would guys in feild ack be vulching people, he didnt say make it a big arse ffa with no kill shooter and only 1 country, the way i see it
its an MA with unperkd planes and instead of waiting 15mins to get around 10k you can do it alot faster, kinda arcadish but definetly attract more customers and somethin to do for the ones already bored,
AH2 and TOD arent gonna be here for along while, my guess we got about another 6 months before we see an actual AH2 without the TOD even added yet
thatd be an ok idea for now( i can say about 99.9% that idea will never happen) but yea.
Somethin id like to see in the future, not saying anytime soon but future, is an arena with the late war and almost made it rides, F8f,Go-229, you know all the expierments and those planes along with all the others. Just an idea itd be kinda fun to play around with em.(doubt that idea will ever happen either, oh well:D )

I think the only way you could have it work was either as a time or rank limited arena.
-
But it should be called the MA>< arena. Instead of kill messages, you could get O\/\/N3D BY messages. It would be the hip new arena for the younger generation.

(wiping brow) whew .... man ... so great to be back in Aces High after flying around in Fighter Ace. That has to be the ultimate try-anything-for-the-shooter corral ... invisible cockpits with key gauges at bottom of screen ... radar with pointers toward action ... external views ... stark rendering with seemingly laser guns ....
Will try to stay with it a month to get my $14.95 worth and see if anything is worth emulating in Aces High. But I'm sure others wiser than I have been there before me and found not a lot.
The external views so admired in noncombat flight simulators don't seem very useful in combat simulators. Better situational awareness, perhaps, before the fight starts.
But once in combat, external views mainly provide great spectating and good film of the filmer's demise. For me, external views provide little if any value in fighting. That hypothesis has been validated in FA and in AH after trying external views dogfighting in A-20s.
For the most realistic matchups and limitations, the Aces High Combat Theater has done a great job in its various scenarios, which also highlight what new rides need to be developed. Presumably Tour of Duty will continue that emphasis on the most realistic developments within particular time periods.
So, this thread, which includes several enduring concerns of other threads, has come full circle.
Instead of creating an additional arena, recommend that the Main Arena allow: (1) external views for all planes and ground vehicles (like the FS2004 Spot view), (2) all rides unperked, and (3) bomber airstarts (probably about 10k and only from fields to the rear).
Combat Theater has validated the latter two points in several scenarios.
After all, the Main Arena is where Aces High technology ought to be allowed to shine unfettered by players' individual ideas about what constitutes a fair game and what doesn't. Perpetual perk point debate is a red herring detracting from more substantial issues.
For example, it remains astonishing that the greatest bomber of WWII, the B-29, has not been worked into play. The B-29 and many other new planes and ground vehicles need to be added to Aces High. Let free market choices determine numbers used in the Main Arena, and do the side balancing and realistic matchups in Combat Theater and Tour of Duty.
The Dreaded Dweebs will have more fun (they pay the same dues as everyone else), the Top Guns will have more targets and more opportunity to excel in lesser rides to better demonstrate their mastery, and the endless distraction of perk point micromanagement will be consigned to the obscurity it deserves.

Bottom line is there are a lot of people from FA who've joined AH.....I don't know anyone who left AH to join FA......
