Subtract the beer and I've been pretty much on this diet for about 10 years :aok

Seriously, a good friend of mine tried it for about 6 months, lost a bunch of weight.

it can be a major pain in the arse and expensive too...

co-worker is on it and when we goto lunch he usually cant have anything on the menu (hosiptal cafeteria)

he has to "make" deli sandwiches with no bread. priced by weight he spends about the same as 3-4 full sandwiches.

if you are going to do it ZERO beer allowed. and you have to plan your meals well in advance.

It's really not a very good diet to stick by. Sure it seems tempting, but even too much protein can wreak havoc on your kidneys. If you drink vodka with club soda, that has no carbs. As far as diet is concerned, there should be no quick fixes, just permanent healthy eating habits. Hope you guys don't mind me posting seriously on here. Now that I found you, I'm starting to lurk around.

My friend and my friends dad have been on that diet for like 6 months.  She's lost like 45 pounds, her dad has lost like 60.  Only problem is they still look the same to me.  If you want to change the way you look, the only way to do it is to exersize and lift weights.  If not it is kinda like...  you start out as a 250 pound pear shaped person..  you lose 50 pounds and now you are a 200 pound pear shaped person.

Something similar to the Atkins diet (and much healthier) is called the "Paleolithic" diet.  Do a google search on it.

The Paleolithic diet is vegetables, meats, and some fruits.  Very healthy.

Lol.

As for diets, eat what you want, just less of it.  Drink a glass of ice water just before you eat; helps you eat less.  And exercise, preferably cardio stuff like running or biking.  There ya go.

Fad diets are just that... fads.  In 10 years, research will show that the Atkins diet gives you cancer or causes brain decay or makes you have a smaller noodle.  Cutting any major food group out of your diet is probably bad.

I know that the Atkins diet does work, if you do it faithfully you will lose weight.

Bad breath is a side effect so you might want to carry some excel gum around with you (does it have carbs?)

The problem is that staying on it very long term might not be healthy, it is a high fat high cholesterol diet and that is not good. Eating 3 eggs and 4 pieces of bacon every morning for breakfast might help you lose weight but imagine what that stuff is doing to your circulatory system.

I think it might be a good way to lose 20 lbs but once you get it off you have to cut portion size, work some carbs back into your diet (beer not french fries) and get some exercise into your weekly routine. If you start to put the weight you lost back on increase the exercise right away (a 45 min walk after dinner will do wonders). If you let the weight come back on you will probably get heavier than where you were when you started.

Post by: Westy on December 08, 2003, 10:31:39 AM
I've been on the "Atkins" since the summer and I've lost 40lbs. I'd like to lose another 20 to be at my "best ever" adult weight (when I got out of bootcamp)

But I'm not hardcore Atkins. While I followed the Atkins diet plan for the first four weeks (I extended the initial two week "break in" regimen for an extra couple of weeks to REALLY shed my body of the carb craving) but after that I stayed pretty faithful. The real exception is I allow myself to eat any veggies as much as I wanted regardless of carbs. Veggies are good no matter what they are IMO.

However I simply just do not eat pastas, soda, breads, cakes, muffins, doughnuts, chips, snacks, bagels, potatoes or rice.  At first that sucked because I lived for all that.  You can bet I miss having a nice Chicken Parm dinner or blue berrry muffins in the morning.  So essentially I have cut out all the starches, sugars and high carb foods that I possibly can.  And it works.

I eat a hellofalot of meats, eggs cooked in all manor, cheeses galore, zero carb diet soda, salads (any kind with feta and strips of chicken or steak on it or a  Ceasar also with chicken or steak. But! No croutons).
I'm MUCH healthier (per results at my last physical) and feel just so much better over all (don't smoke either so that helps). And I've lost enough weight that I could exercice if I chose to but I hate exercise and the dicks who think I should.

 As for beer?

Tis the greatest sacrifice of all.   For beer I drink Michelob "Ultra."  It's not Sam Adams but it's the best low carb beer out there. Miller Lite and the other American "Lite" or low carb beers truly tasted like sh&t and being on a low carb diet and jonesing for a beer here and there hasn't changed my mind about that at all.

Megan you will find this board a place where you need a thick skin. Not everyone here is a desperate loser who will gladly send you airfare in the hopes that you will come and visit them. Not everyone here is a flyboy wanna be. Many are private pilots, some are commercial ones and some are military pilots. Some don't fly at all.

Some have good jobs and some have great girlfriends and wifes and familys. Some are total ********s (Like Straffo and SLO) and some are pretty smart. Some will treat you like you are royality and hang on your every post. Some will treat you like anyone else here and flame you if you piss them off.

But if you do stick around you will find it an intersting place. And if you every decide to try a flight sim you will find a hobby more addictive than herion.

True story. In another newsgroup I go too there is an ex-stripper who plays another flight sim. I know she was as she is very open and even posted some pics of herself. She was always friendly and chatty and I think she played more for the social aspect of the communtiy than for the flight sim aspect. She met a guy there and visited him and now they are very happily married. Going on 3 years too I think.

Actually, there was a recent study (so sorry can't remember who/where) and they don't know WHY but the Atkins diet DOES work.  The scientists conclusions were people on the Atkins diet lost more weight than the above mentioned group (both groups consuming the same daily calories)

Anyone involved in high-impact or endurance sports shouldn't do it as can overstress your muscles and wreck havoc on metabolism.  The general idea behind the Atkins Diet, if I understand it correctly, is that it forces your body to burn its fat stores to meet everyday metabolic needs.  If you increase the load on your body via exercise without a subsequent change in diet to include more carbs, you can really mess yourself up with muscle strains and tears.

You're better off with (a) removing sugar from your food intake and (b) endurance exercises, such as running, cycling, or swimming.  Atkins is a good start to drop the initial weight but its not something you'd want to sustain, particularly if you are involved in hard physical activities.  Atkins can be unhealthy if you're not careful.

I would never consider cutting out vegetables.

I would never consider cutting out fruits.

I would never consider cutting out starches and carbs, just consuming less of them.

My aunt is on the Atkins diet and she said that, at first, she felt a bit tired and run-down, but she did manage to lose 15 pounds and after awhile she added some carbs back in and really started feeling wonderful afterwards.  I'm guessing that with less bulk to move around, her body wasn't as stressed, and when she brought the quick-burning carbs back in to her diet, her muscles thanked her.

Right there with ya Westy. I too am doing the "extended induction period". Been doing this for 6 weeks now and lost 23lbs. I wasn't huge but the wobly stuff was really annoying me. I also excercise every weekday morning, situps, pushups, and ATLEAST 20 mins on the stationary bike while playing Gran Turismo 3 (helps me pedal faster :) )
I'm gonna start working back in the beer carbs today , yippeeee. I feel I have maybe 10 more lbs to go until I'm satisfied and then I just have to keep a healthy lifestyle.

56 days into it, got smashed on no carb vodka on pry 40 of them, still down 33 lbs. Pulled the old 38 pants to my chin and gave my wife a camel toe shot, she wasn't impressed.

If your fat and want to get baked regular, I highly recommend leaving the carbs out and doing Atkins. You will feel so much better, you can get drunk twice as much!

Creamo - pleased to hear that it's working for you. It's bound to work for fat bastages like us. What surprised me was how I lost so much so fast: Two belt-buckle holes down in two weeks. I was out in the garden pulling weeds when my trousers almost fell down. All I did was to cut out carbs: potatoes, bread, pasta, rice, and beer (initially). The real problem was boredom! Meat & salad gets a bit boring, but Tomato feeds me well on meat & veg...

I brought some duty free vodka back from the US (con visit) and it was awful. Have stuck to red wine since.

Just think, Creamo - with your reduced body mass, you'll be able to get smashed on vodka for about half the cost from now on. Still, doesn't take much to get yanks drunk. :lol

Its only refined and simple carbohydrates that can cause trouble.

A person could eat all the brown rice or whole wheat pasta he wanted and would not get fat.  Complex unrefined carbohydrates are just not dense enough in macro-nutrients to cause obesity.

Foods with high AE (assimilation efficiency) are what causes weight gain:  Meats, oils, whole milk, eggs, nuts, refined grains, simple carbohydrates.

Most unrefined plant foods have an AE of 15-30%.  Meats are around 80% and up.

If you are insulin resistant, that will make you feel hungry all the time.  Some estimates are that 30% of Americans are insulin resistant.  Also known as 'Syndrome X'.
