There's a running joke where I work in regards to patents that revolves around the best patents being based on the simplest ideas.  I'm the record holder in my group and I'll share the patent with you guys if its ever aproved.  Here's one that's been floating around our group today that put's mine to shame:

In most cases it's the cat's owner who needs exercise bad... so I would tie the light source on the cat's tail, and let the fat guy run and jump around the light spot...
