I dunno....they keep saying things like "Its like a play and we're re doing it differently, yet creatively".
Kinda reminds me of that "Embedded" play spoofing off embedded reporters in the Iraq war....
Bad vibes....but we'll see
My prediction...lotsa eye candy, thin plot...nothing less, nothing more.
-
nope ain't gonna watch..
not going to taint my memories of childhood and wanting to be "starbuck" when i grew up LOL
-
You guys talk like the original was any good to begin with.
This new one cant be any worse.
-
UUUUUUUUUUUUgh !!! they gave the role of starbuck to a girl ..
And what about Cassiopia ? ... im crushed
-
cyclons are now sex addict andriod women... sad. I will pass on this one too..
"by your command"
-
I'm definately gonna watch. This isn't Star Wars, this is BG. The series had great special effects, but not so super scripts.
Olmos (the new Adama) has said that fanboys of the original series probably won't like this, so if you're a card carrying member of the Dirk Benedict fan club and just spent $750 on a set of 'Bonanza' VHS tapes so you can imagine Adama riding a horse in the wild west, then this might not be for you.
If, on the other hand, you liked the story idea and are curious about what they'll do with it, it's worth checking out.
-
So far, bette than the original... but thats not saying much, is it? :)
the space scenes are VERY Well done. I love how the fighters stabilize using fume thrusters. And the radar and multi function displays look very nice and realistic.
aside from the soap operaish crap, this is turning better than I expected.
-
I read an interview with Edward James Olmos who said he did not recomend anyone watching it.
Watching it now, mixed ideas on it.
-
Be interesting to see....
the whole female Starbuck is a worry...I mean what if Apollo and starbuck...ewww ...
At least I have the new Box set to keep the negative vibes in check...
Tronsky
-
Commander Adomma's most briliant tactic as a leader was to "launch all Vipers" lol
-
Fridaddy, he DIDN'T say "don't watch it".
I must say one thing and will say this very clearly," Olmos told critics as the Sci Fi Channel's session was drawing to a close. "If you are a person who really has a strict belief in the original, I would not advise that you watch this program. It'll hurt them.
"We really don't stand true to the kind of characters that were built around the original. It definitely does break the mold. Some of the characters' names are the same, but the intent and the way that we are building the reality is completely not the reality that was built in the original."
Get your quotes right. This is the same kind of thing that starts stupid misquotes like saying the Gore claimed he invented the internet (he didn't say that (http://www.snopes.com/quotes/internet.htm)) or that George Washington said Jews should be killed (also not true (http://www.snopes.com/quotes/thejews.htm)).
Did you screw up on purpose so you could get a reaction? Or was it an honest mistake?
-
and its still "launch all vipers"
The female Starbuck sux... big time
come on they could have changed some of the script from the original ... the 1st 20 mins i almost tossed the remote thru the tv
-
The original Starbuck is worse IMO. LOL that character was cringeworthy.
Maybe its because I'm of a different generation, but that original one was cringeworthy.

The original was a HUGE let down to me as a kid. I remember reading a preliminary article about it in a sci-fi mag with sketches and everything (and a nice pic for a 13 year old boy of Hanoi Jane from Barberlla on the back cover :)). Then there was the hype, and the promotions... I was expecting Star Wars on TV... Arrgh! Buck Rogers in the 21st century was better (at least Erin Gray in those disco space jumsuits)
Charon
-
Cool show... I enjoyed it... looking forward to the next one...
-
I remember seeing it in the huge Cina Capre 70mm format after Star Wars.
What a big letdown. I was a kid of maybe 14, and thought it was gonna be another Star Wars experience...... was very wrong.
Then the TV series came out...... what a joke that was, yet was most expensive series to make I think ( at the time)
-
I, for one, am very impressed. Very interesting production and twists of the original characters. It exceed BY FAR my low expectations. I really liked how it incorporated Navy terms (better to me than even Star Trek) and modified a few to fit a "space ship". Could of been a hell of alot worse. Loosen up gents.
-
As am I. It was better than I expected. I'll watch the next one.
-
Diablo's on target. I just finished watching it and enjoyed it...at least enough to want to watch part two. I loved the original show when I was in high school, then watched an episode last week for the first time in over twenty years. Gawd, it screems "campy" now. This new one has some interesting cinematography, and the story is an interesting change. Still not exactly sure what the whole original war was about, or why the Cylons come back to destroy the colonies fourty years later. I hope they develop that back-story a bit more.
-
Not as bad as I thought it would be, but still, I would have preferred to see some real Cylons and their original fighters.
-
I thought it was pretty good for a show on SciFi.
Going to watch it tommorrow night, I have nothing better to do and enjoy SciFi shows/movies anyway.
-SW
-
i wouldnt mind seeing the other 11 cylons ... that glowing spine thinky was kinda cool ...
needs more of the old glowing eye and the old brain cylons ... along with more fighter action ... guess ill watch the next one
now didnt the humans make the cylons , and they rebelled ??
-
It was far better than I expected, as well. Not terribly impressed with the female Cylon, and there wasn't much backround info except 'There was a Cylon war before, and --- oh damn, they're back from wherever they went, and just killed most of our fleet.'.
I'm looking forward to the next episode, and hope it will have more of the traditional-looking Cylons, the ones we saw for a few seconds in the first scene of the premiere.
Female Starbuck doesn't look to be a bad decision, either.
-
"I took the initiative in creating the Internet."
Yeah, whatever, he didn't say he created the Internet.
These are the same people who brought us the great debate over the definition of "is".
-
It was EXCELLENT.
I am looking forward to part 2. All you naysayers who said you'd pass, SciFi channel is giving you a second chance to repent. They will replay part 1 tomorrow immediately before part 2.
It's worth it.
-
What was the name of that talking plate the robot wore around his neck?
-
I think you're talking about Buck Rogers. That Twiki thing wore some POS called Theopolis around his neck like a Mercedes hood ornament.
-
Hold on a second here.
Boomer seems to have turned into some Korean chick.
This is just wrong.

Yeah, in the old show Boomer was the Shizzle in the Galactizzle. But worse than turning Boomer in to a Korean Girl, they seem to have wiped out all Black men. Perhaps the colony of Africon was destroyed in the first Cylon war or some ****, but that's the one of only two things I didn't like about the show.
The other thing being everyone screwing. Who gives a ****, blow up some more stuff man. But that's just me.
I went into this expecting to hate it, but I thought it totaly kicked ass. While the original played up that hokey "our past is their past" stuff, this one plays more to the "our present is their present" and it works pretty well. Now I don't have to figure out which is longer, I micron, a Centon, or a secton.
Things I liked:
Starbuck. I thought this worked pretty well. By adding a Uterus, they didn't feel they had to change much else of the charactor. She's pretty much the same as the Dirk Benedict Charactor, a wise bellybutton who plays cards and smokes cigars who'se unorthodox behaviour is more than made up for in the cockpit. All the other Charactors were revamped in major ways: Tigh is an alcoholic, Apollo actually has balls, Adama doesn't go around quoting the damned "book of the word" all the time, Boomer isn't just a Korean Girl, she's also a Rook, and flys the space going E2C Hawkweye (more on that later) ect. So I liked the chicka starbuck.
The "look and feel." That whole "this arcaic ship was created 40 years ago blah blah blah" reminded me of the USS Midway during Desert Storm. As has been mentioned by others, I too think they did a good job of blending contemperary ideas with the sci-fi backdrop. It might be cheezy, but I love the radios, and the "quiet" of space.
There are Enlisted Charactors. Its downright un-American to have a ship crewed by nothing but officers. I'm glad that the deck crew looks like they are going to have a central role in this, and not just be tossed in to die whenever the script calls for mass casualties (although as evidenced in the first episode, they'll still be used as such... sweet).
The Raptor. It's nice to have something beside Vipers in a space battle. Having an SWAC to coordinate the space battles makes sense and adds additional flavor to the same stock footage of Vipers fighting Cylons. In the old show we would always point out when someone took a "Zak Hit" (stock footage from the Pilot, where Rick Springfield gets hit in the top engine) Hopefully with additional ships (I'm holding out that they have Attack ships too, but I don't know that) and computer animation, hopefully the footage will stay fresh a bit longer.
The conflict between the military and civilian authority. Nice, no more "Warrior King" stuff. That should be interesting as well.
I liked it, and wish I could watch tonight, but I have a final that runs until 9:30  I'll record it.

Animal's right and I stand corrected...the fanboy's hype was wrong. I was pretty impressed with what I saw. I really liked that space was "silent" and ships were using thrusters to maneuver and the like.
The plot's not bad, Im pretty anxious for tonight's episode.
I wish there was a bit more history on the cylons, from past to present...but perhaps that will be expanded upon as the war continues.
For once, it seemed like SciFi eased back on the ads. I dont watch much SciFi or Comedy Central due to their intense and repettive ads every 5 minutes.

Woo-hoo!
Hopefully Time-Warner Cable will have their act together this time around. Lost both my ISP and my cable TV last night. Couldn't fly AH, couldn't watch "Battlestar Galactica". Ended up watching "He Sees You When You're Sleeping" (wife's choice) on videotape, then doing NASCAR Racing 2003, and painting a new car.
-
I liked it... a pleasant surprise so far. My only complaint; apparently the simulated camera shake and zoom is the computer effect du jour. Every single freaking CG shot had the same wobble-left wobble-right fast-zoom then wobble-left again. Reminds me of the ring explosions that were everywhere 6-8 years ago.
I hope they get bored with this one quickly.
I'm definitely going to watch the rest, though. I like where they're going with it.
-
For some reason in the fighter scenes, I kept seeing niki's and spits.
I also kept thinking, "Heck, their aim is no better than mine is in AH!"
Im not addicted. Im not addicted. Im not addicted.
-
The Cylon fighters were a nice change. Rather than have a ship that carried a robot as the series had them, the robot is the ship.
-
One thing I really liked... the use of missiles and bullets (or at least it looked to me that the Vipers shot bullets). Nice change from seeing lasers everywhere.
-
Too much sex to draw in the kids like the original (Did I just write "too much sex"? ;)).
Fight scenes were too short.
No footage I saw of the Colonial Fleet going up in smoke. At least the first one showed the other battlestars blowing up. A wonderful chance for some first rate space combat (even if it showed the Colonial fleet's computers not working)
Nice throwback with the original music during Adama' speech, the cylon "display" and the Viper. Also with the name of several of the battlestars.
This is the best military the humans have? We're doomed of the little BEM's from ET invade. No military discipline. I can see that the writers probably want to show an evolution into a true military force, but they started with a baseline that was too low. Way too much disrespect to officers.
Interesting that they didn't show the cities going up(even the first one spent more time showing the destruction of the Colonies), but showed bodies floating in space.
- Overall I think I liked it. But I'm not sold on it yet.
-
There were a lot of cool little details. For instance, the passenger starship using airliner terminology: "This is Colonial 745 heavy on short final".

I agree. I would have loved to have seen the Cylons lay the wood to the Colonial Fleet. Or even just to see an Armada of 12 Battlestars. That was a missed opporunity I think. The closest they came was with the debree around Caprica as Boomer and Helo drifted down.
With regard tot he military discipline... I had read some spoilers in a script review, and had convinced myself that there was no way this was going to fly. I had convinced myself that this was going to be so bad, that when it turned out to be just sorta bad, I was happy.
Even so, most of the problems were directed at Tigh, who has lost the respect of his men. So I think it will work itself out quickly.

Never saw the original - too young - but I did enjoy the episode last night - plesently surprised.
Thought the ship design was top notch - a good mix of 'atmospheric flight past' and future theory - use of nuclear weapons to make it more identifiable to us, etc.
I have a question though - Is the "12 Colonies" supposed to be our civilization in 800 years or so or is it totally seperated from Humanity barring, of course, the humans present?
Maybe a dumb question that was answered - I was doing other things while it was on and might have missed it.
-
In the original series, this was happening in the late 1970s. Earth was the long lost home of humanity and the 12 colonies were colonies of Earth or another planet that had been seeded by Earth thousands of years ago.
-
I'm rewatching it this morning while getting ready for work, and there are extra details I missed in the beginning. For example, blondie talking w/ Gaius about his new code running at 95% efficiency throughout the entire fleet. That certainly explains quite a bit!
I particularly liked the scene right after Starbuck reports to Adama that they have pilots but no fighters. Take that, velvet ropes!
(I phrased the above so it shouldn't spoil anything, but people who saw it will understand)

basicly 13 human colonies set out to populate the galaxy. 12 settled and made 12 @ caprica. the 13th (us) kept going and settled earth.
-
Saur,
In the original, we all came from a planet called Kobal which begain to suffer from some sort of enviromental disaster caused by polution. The people from Kobal all left the planet and settled 12 planets called the 12 Colonies. IIRC, there was a period of Ludditism where all space travel, etc. was lost. Then the 12 Colonies begain to go into space, find their neighbors and set up a interplanetary government. However, there was a legend (or religion if you like) that said a group from Kobal colonized a 13th planet and it was called Earth. One of the interesting things was that 12 Colony planets were named similar to Earth constellations. I guess to show that there was a connection.
Later they ran into a race of machines called the Cylons. The Cylons had been created by a race of reptiles and had killed their creators. The Cylons were on a mission to destroy or enslave any living thing and were attacking a third race. The Colonials intervened on behalf of the other race and caused the Cylons to declare war on them (which, it was infered, would have eventually happened anyways). After a war of 1000 years, the Cylons convienced humans that they were ready for peace. However the humans were betrayed by one of their own, Councilman Baltar, and the last human fleet was destroyed in an ambush. The Colonies were destoryed. The last battlestar, Galactica, leds a rag-tag fleet in search of the 13th Colony, a planet called...Earth.
Wow. I guess I watched that show way too much :D
BTW, the original writer of BG, Glenn Larson, was a Mormon and it had a influence on the show: http://www.michaellorenzen.com/galactica.html
Similarities in the Plot of Battlestar Galactica and Mormonism
There are many parallels between the story of Battlestar Galactica and Mormon teachings. The Book of Mormon tells the story of how the Prophet Lehi took the remnant of the Tribe of Joseph to ancient America around the year 600 BC. In Battlestar Galactica, mankind founded twelve different colonies. In addition, mankind also founded a thirteenth colony on Earth that was lost from the other twelve. In the same way that The Book of Mormon has a Tribe of Israel lost on another continent beyond the knowledge of the other tribes, Battlestar Galactica has a lost colony of man separate from the main body of humanity. The lost Tribe of Israel is central to The Book of Mormon in the same way that the lost colony of Earth is central to Battlestar Galactica.
In the Battlestar Galactica episode originally aired on the 24th of September and 1st of October 1978 titled "Lost Planet of the Gods", the home world of all humanity is revealed to be the planet Kobol. This name is strikingly similar to the star Kolob which is discussed in Mormon theology. In The Pearl of Great Price, The Book of Abraham Chapter Three, Kolob is described as the star "nearest onto the Throne of God." Interestingly, the ship on which armistice talks between the colonies and the Cylons took place was the "Star Kobol" as revealed in the premier episode which aired on 17th September 1978.
Another similarity between Mormonism and Battlestar Galactica is in the political structure of the ruling bodies of each. The Mormon Church is run by a Quorum of the Twelve which is headed by a president. In Battlestar Galactica, the colonies are ruled by a Council of Twelve which is also headed by a president (Ford 84).

Ah, cool - that makes it a little bit more interesting to me.
Will be watching tonight. Am I correct that its only a 2 night deal? Thats kind of disapointing, Everything I read says "Epic Conclusion" tonight. :(

Give it a month or two and you'll be able to rent/buy it on DVD. Should come with a lot of behind the scenes stuff. That's always one of my favorite things about DVDs.

Found out that one of the reasons for the Adama-Starbuck-Apollo relationship is that supposedly Starbuck was engaged to marry Apollo's dead brother Zak. It's hinted at in the show (when she's in the brig, she asks Apollo, "And he meant nothing to me?") but it would have really explained many things about what was going on.

I watched the first one last night and will be watching the rerun tonite when I get off work. I thaught the first one was pretty good and above expectations. Some of the fighter sequences really brought into play some of the physics of future space fighting....

So far both of these episodes have been better than SW Epi 1 & 2 COMBINED. The amount of thought that went into this remake is staggering. The plot twist at the end of pt. 2 really threw me. I am glad that you guys are more accepting of Starbuck as a female in the remake. I ask you this, who is a bigger girl? The new Starbuck or the originial Luke Skywalker?"

I've had to tape the last 2 nights' episodes due to volleyball practice commitments and cable tv outages. I'm taping tonight's episode as well, but did manage to catch snippets of Pt.2 when Sci-Fi aired the encore. What I saw looked a lot more edgier than the mainstream ABC Family Television stuff of the '70s. The airops lingo sounds like it was lifted right off the transcripts of an aircraft carrier. Nice touch. I like the thruster stabilizers in the nose of the Viper, too. The twist at the end of Pt.2 is certainly different.
I really hope they release it on DVD so I can watch the whole thing without commercial interruption. Looks like a pretty good storyline they're setting up. Now I just have to find the time to go back and watch Eps 1, 2, and 3 before Ep4 comes on! :p
-
Well besides the bombardment of Expedia ads, I enjoyed the 2nd show as well. Quite the twist at the end.
I was reading thru that awful thing SciFi calls a BBS and I'm not alone in hating the intense advertising lol
If this is a pilot, its quite good...I hope they opt to develop this some more.
-
I saw the encore (Pt 1 I presume) and the 2hr show following that which I presume is Pt2 ... when are Pt3 and Pt4 airing ?

does this mean theres only 12 human cylons ?
or does it mean there are 12 models of human cylons ?
or is the only 12 types of cylons all together ?

twelve models of human cylons with multiple copies. At the end the cylons break into the hold where the Galacticians left the acused cylon and you saw multiples of the same model. I noticed there were at least four of the hot chick cylons.

I think it's 12 models of cylons. We've seen six. The Vixen, the Pirate, the Boomer, that Admin guy, the Metal Guards, and the Fighters.
If you recall, on the earliest engagement, one of the fighter pilots remarked that there was no cockpit in the cylon fighter. The entire craft is a robot, I believe.

They were in the new version, Acepilot. In the old TV series (which dune was talking about), the Cylons were a completely alien (species?).
