Title: P38 in ice
Post by: Sixpence on December 10, 2003, 04:30:11 PM
I watched a documentary about the P38 being pulled from the ice. In the film, they fired the cannon from the plane into a metal barrel. I was in conversation with someone today who says the gun was never fired. I told him I saw the film, but he insisted it was fake. Anyone have any info on this?

Was that Glacier Girl from the lost squadron?  I saw the film a few times, but don't remember the cannon being fired.

Sixpence that was me you had the "conversation" with.  It was more like a pissing match though.

I swear i have seen and touched glacier girl, the P-38 you speak of.  It was this year in Dayton Ohio.

From the story i know of, glacier girl was in transit when she and her entire flight went down.

Im not an USAF expert by any means, but planes in transit didnt carry ammo and unless the barrels were stainless steel they would be much too small to fire a live 50 cal once they were dug out of a good 1/4 mile of ice.

sorry i treated you poorly online, i can be a little quick with unkind words at times.

No problem, you had me doubting what I saw. It was on public television, they filmed the digging and everything. They went down pretty far in ice. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it. They mounted the cannon on what looked like a snowmobile and fired a round into a metal barrel. I remembered it cause I never saw a cannon fired. It blew my mind, I didn't realize what a 20mm cannon round was capable of. The barrel was mangled to say the least. I'll never whine about one cannon round taking my wing off again, that's for sure.

I saw the documentary, they fired one of the weapons at a barrel.
Yes, the aircraft where carrying live ammo.  I think it was the 20mm they fired, might have been a .50 cal though, it sure did a number on the barrel they shot it at.  The weapon was strapped to something when they did it.

Yes, the planes were carrying live ammo.

Yes, the ammo was still good when it was dug out of the ice.

As for firing the weapon, I didn't see that particular documentary so I don't know.
