Every time I install a wireless network for friends or family, I detect (and usually access just for fun) the network of one or more neighbors.  People either aren't aware or just don't care.

A funny note, I recognized some of the APs from when I go wardriving, and I knew one of the APs because it's two offices down from mine.

Roaming an area/region with a wireless networking card and looking for wireless access points.  Many routers and wireless hubs can be accessed from the outside (driving on streets for example).  Apparently, they reach a few hundred feet in the air too :)

Non-secure access points allow for anyone to randomly tap into a network (home or office) and snoop around... or create some havoc.

No, Octavius, that's not the focus.

Non-secured access points are primarilly useful for getting free access to the internet.  Wardrivers tend to avoid using open APs to compromise the security of companies, for our culture it's all about free internet access.
