Title: Half Life 2
Post by: Octavius on December 12, 2003, 01:48:37 PM
Whats the deal with this game?  I thought it went gold back in September?

I hope that source code ordeal isn't behind all of this.  I was kinda hoping to see it before the holidays.

All that the stealing of the source code did was to show how incomplete the game actually was. They were dead set on December, but it wouldn't have surprised me if the code was leaked on purpose to enable them more time to finish writing the game properly - rather then having a premature release by december.

My 2 cents,

Was wondering the same thing Wolf. It actually makes sense. I can't believe the code would be that accessible, and it solves quite a bit of delay problems, very conveniently. Im not big into these type of games but this does look cool.

Personally I sensed the pressure from ATI and Sierra to have the december release for obvious reasons - require a hardware upgrade to play the most nutcrushing game out. Valve did themselves a great service if they did leak it - because its better to keep their good rep with the customers then release a piece of crap and completely lose all respect on the shack, etc.

From what I understand they're doing a huge mess of rewriting to the code since it was stolen.  Something to do with copyrighting, or intellectual property, I dunno.

Anyone thinking they leaked it on purpose better think again. Not only did they leak their own source code, but they also leaked the physics engine that they had liscenced from another company. If that other company decides to sue, then Valve is probably no-more. Valve effectively killed that other company in this leak, and my bet is that behind the scenes, Valve is paying a very heavy price.
