As someone who is currently reading a lot of bugs from beta testers, I thought I would give the community-at-large a little primer on good bug reporting.
The first step when you find a bug is to write down as much as you remember about what you were doing when the bug occurred. The second step is to reproduce the problem. Reset the application and see if the same error occurs. If you cannot reproduce the problem, make sure you point that out in the bug report.
Are you running any background apps?
Call up you buddy, does the bug happen on his system?
What version of Aces High are you running? Does it happen on a newer version? (if one is avalible)
Think about the bug. What are the minimum steps required to reproduce it.
Here’s an example.
---------------------------
DESCRIPTION:
Aircraft gear can be raised while aircraft is sitting on the ground.
TO REPRO:
1) Launch AH
2) Click “fly”
3) Press <BUTTON> for external view of aircraft
4) Press <BUTTON> to raise the landing gear
RESULTS:
The gear raises and the fuselage remains stationary, hovering above the ground.
EXPECT:
It should not be possible to raise the landing gear when the plane is on the ground.
If you have a bug that is configuration related, remember to include all of your config info.

Actually, my P-51D Pilot Training Manual says "Do not raise the [landing gear] control lever when the airplane is on the ground. There is no safety down-lock on the P-51D, and the gear will retract as soon as you start taxiing."

Now I'm confused... If we're able to retract the gear while on the ground, is it a bug or a feature??? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

well quasar it would seem to be a point of view answer,as it would be a feature to have someone retract there gear on the ground so they can't kill me,or a bug in their wetwire mush that they call brain if they do retract the gear while still on the ground.really now it's just a matter of perspective (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
and before someone get's aggitated,I know,I know I'm being sarcastic!bad dog!

RESULTS: The gear raises and the fuselage remains stationary, hovering above the ground.
EXPECT: Aircraft crashes to the ground in a cloud of dust, and virtual crew chief comes running out of maintenance shed, shouting incoherently.

popeye
ps. I've seen several USAAF training films that warn against raising the gear while on the ground. One even showed the unhappy results.

well badman, did your post learn you anything about this board??

LOL Chester, I expected nothing less from this bunch of degenerate hooligans.
Never the less, I imparted some useful information and I know at least one of these jokers took it to hart. I have been testing software professionally for 4 years now, and it always amazes me when I read some of the beta tester bugs that come in.
What the hell am I supposed to do with a bug that says, “There is a blue pixel on the screen, it looks bad.”
That was the WHOLE bug. Just that one line. LOL
Just smile and nod, say thank you, and be on your way. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Badman,
Thanks for the info, never had to help beta test before, your info will be usefull to me (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

"The lever was there and I just scliiiisk pulled it!" Jimmy Stewart to Marlene dietrich after retracting the gear of a 4-engined a/c on the ramp at Gander (or Newfoundland).
I've flown lots of retract a/c but never run across one that would retract on the ground though.

When I was in the service I went on a number of maintenance calls where I toggled the O N / O F F Switch to the O N position.
Going to an autoplant.
Plant Guy "The Damn thing don't work, fix it"
Me "What seems to be the Problem"
Plant Guy "If I knew that I wouldn't have called you"
Me "What were you doing when it broke"
Plant Guy "Nothing"
(Actually I find the above quote easy to believe, If he would have said playing euchre I would know he was being honest.)
I still do a lot of Toggleing the O N / O F F switch to the O N Position.
Another old standby is depressing the MASTER RESET Pushbutton one time. That has fixed more problems than I can remember.

All this stuff about landing gear reminds me of a true story.
Some of you know that I work in Customer Support for a rather large aircraft manufacturer, Well one day a telex comes in from a certain not-to-be-named-here foreign carrier. For those of you unfamiliar with very large commercial aircraft they typically have one nose landing gear, one pair of body landing gear and one pair of wing landing gear that are just outboard of the body gear. So this telex comes in and it says something like this:
The airplane maintenance manual states not to raise the wing landing gear while taxing. Why can we not do this? Please explain.
The answer went something like this:
Because the airplane will tip over and go boom. Details will follow in xxxxxxx coorespondence.
Crass? Yes. Funny...hell yes. Better yet, the telex was followed up with a four page detailed telex outlining the pitfalls of retracting the wing gear while taxiing. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Don't bring anything sharp near Jenna, she might pop. Yuck.
And the P-51D markings are still wrong.

Yeah, as a software dev I suffer fools lightly (then place them in an over pre-heated to 450 F).
Last week I got a bug reading "Something broken on reporting screen"
I closed the bug with resolution "Something fixed on reporting screen".
Any chance we could have an 'active bugs' screen along with some sort of bug numbering system? Less chance of duplicate bugs, and it allows us to refer to previous problems by saying "Bug #235 is only partially fixed..." instead of "Uh, remember that thing that was happening when you did that thing with the thing while you were doing that other thing?"
my dos peso.
