With the new icons in 1.1996 even within 1000 yards of the target the icon only shows the range to the nearest 100 yards instead of to the nearest yard as in AH1?
It makes gunnery a bit more interesting: the laser range finder just got 100 times less accurate.

Very well noticed, Pei.
The distance changes in increments of 200 yards within 1k distance, and 500 yards outside 1k.
It's still a bit early to say what kind of real changes in combat this would bring, but I've seen a quite a few people complaining how enemy planes they thought were out in safe distances, suddenly 'jumped' close to them.
What it seems to suggest, is people might start putting less trust into the numbers, and actually grow a habit of paying attention to the situation/enemy plane itself.
If someone spots an enemy from far away, the changing increments of 500 yards is enough for him to judge the relative differences in speed between his plane and the enemy's. However, if you weren't paying attention, and suddenly notice an enemy plane behind you at 1.5k, you have no idea if that distance will suddenly diminish to 400 yards in 1 second, or 5 seconds.
In the old icons, you can tell the E state by watching how the distance diminishes by every yard, but since there's no way of telling that in the new icons, it'd bring out many interesting situations - and of course, interesting whines ;)

From my point of view, the biggest problem with the new numbers is not while engaging enemy aircraft, but rather while trying to fly in close formation with another friendly.
The numbers were always AH's best clue to the need to make subtle adjustments in pitch, power, and coarse settings in order to stay in the correct position.
When I'm trying to stay tight with my wingmen, I want to know my/their relative position more precisely than the nearest 100M, and when the numbers were not changing, I knew I was locked in...but not now.

No disrespect, but formation flying needs a practice of its own.
The flight leader and wingman both share the same understanding in what angles, what throttle setting, what speeds to maintain, in which situation.
If you don't have that kind of understanding going with your flight leader, it won't be easy to keep up with just visuals.
I've done a few no-icon formation flying with my squaddies, but we had preset conditions during climbout, level flight, when engaging WEP, when turning and etc etc. It wasn't that hard after we practiced it all together..

CptA, Have you flow in formation online in AH2? Becuase freindlys still show like they used to.

That HT... always one step ahead. ;)
