• BLACK HISTORY MUSEUM: The measure establishes a national museum of black history and culture as part of the Smithsonian Institution. Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia, and a former civil rights leader, had introduced legislation in each Congress since 1988 to create the museum. The estimated $400 million initial price tag would be split evenly between federal government and private sources. The bill authorizes $17 million in the first year to start the project. Bush's signature clears the way for fund raising and for the Smithsonian Board of Regents to choose a site.

It's as bad as Black History month!

Racism pure and simple!

Add to that the bill they will sign that allows minorities to get "Down payment Grants" that will allow them to get into homes and out of the apartments....

BOOSH IS EVIL< EVIL I TELL YOU! ;)

This bill is to be signed by Bush today: (This story below is a couple months old)  Wonder if the National news will give this any coverage?  Naaaa! ;)

Quote
Under the proposed American Dream Downpayment Act, the administration wants to give $200 million a year to help first-time home buyers make their down payments.

The bill passed the House this month, and the Senate has yet to act on it. Under the proposed law, the federal government would give an average of $5,000 to 40,000 home buyers each year to help them with their down payments and closing costs. The bill is part of the administration's effort to increase homeownership among minorities by 5.5 million families by 2010.

The nonprofit down-payment assistance industry is glad to win the argument over the wisdom of helping people make their down payments. It is wary of the federal government's plan to give money to home buyers.

"What it does is validate what we're doing," says Jon Cottin, executive director of the Homeownership Alliance of Nonprofit Downpayment Providers (HAND), a group that lobbies for the biggest players in the industry. But Cottin notes that the federal government wants to use taxpayer money, while the nonprofits use private-sector money.

I went to a museum detailing the history of Yorkshire-folk once. Not a mention of Londoners anywhere.

Spend spend spend spend spend.  Don't worry, our grandchildren will figure out a way to pay for it.  Bush has yet to veto a spending bill.

===================

President Bush is clearing his desk before the holidays, signing seven bills that will stem the flood of unwanted e-mail pitches, help needy families buy their first homes and give flight attendants lessons in self-defense.

......

HOMETOWN HEROES SURVIVORS BENEFITS: The measure offers federal aid to the families of fire, police and emergency medical personnel who die of heart attacks or strokes on duty. Under the federal Public Safety Officers Benefits program at the Justice Department (news - web sites), families of these workers can receive a one-time benefit of $267,494 when their relative is killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty.

AVIATION SPENDING: The Bush administration agreed to shield all air traffic control jobs from privatization for a year to get Congress to approve a $60 billion aviation spending bill. It calls for self-defense training for flight attendants and giving cargo pilots permission to carry guns.

The legislation provides $14 billion for airport construction projects, including $140 million to help small communities attract and retain air service, and $308 million to ensure air service to isolated communities. It also sets aside $2 billion for airports to install bomb-screening machines as part of automated bag-handling systems to speed luggage checks.

JEbus! Ripsnort!

That bill has NOTHING to do with race! AND many States already have loan grant programs for home buyers. It is good for the construction industry and the municipalities that now have homeowners instead of renters. Wake up and smell the coffee! The ONLY thing keeping people from home ownership in many cases is the closing costs. Rent payments are often higher than  house payments.

We were able to buy our house because of a state "first time buyers" bill.  I fully support them.

B.S.  Closing costs are rolled into the loan, Midnight.  If they're not, then you need to find another lender.  95% of lenders roll the closing costs into to the loan amount.  You may be confused with refianancing.

Either way, its a good bill, but the Bush Bashers will find evil in it somehow. :)

join the military, use your VA loan....

And I wager its not the closing costs keeping people from buying but qualifying for the loan.

Yes they are!  Keep up the good work everyone.  The more debt and inability you have to buy your own home only helps me out further.

Are there any bills being signed to help investors with their down payments?  C’mon this is a Republican in office right?  It should be easier for me to buy a home than someone who doesn’t have one yet! ;).

Socialism. Maybe if they lowered taxes and reduced government spending for once, people would be able to afford houses and wouldn't need government grants to buy them.  :)

I don't think so, Rip. When my wife and I looked into buying a house, we were told that the closing costs could not be rolled into the loan. Since we couldn't pony up the $4000 for closing costs, we had to find a seller who would pay our closing costs. That's the only way we could swing it.

When we refinanced last year, however, we were able to roll those closing costs into the loan, so in that regard you are correct.

Yeah, I guess I was speaking from a 0 points standpoint.  If you pay the  points to lower the interest rate, you're going to pay points at closing.

Incentive (not as much as shown above... only $1000) and a direct tax credit for the duration of the loan (State tax).

You guys have no idea how good you have it in terms of home ownership in the U.S.  At least you can deduct the interest from your income taxes....we Canucks cannot.

$4,000 USD for closing costs?!?!?!?! Does that include things like land transfer tax, or is that only the "legals"?  If the latter, you guys are getting hosed big time.

I was thinking the same thing.  White history month?  You have white history year, you don’t need a specific month.

I don’t think it has anything to do with paying points on the loan.  You may not have to put anything down but the prepaid interest, escrow, appraisal, title search, and all other “fees” you have to come up with.

That is unless it’s a VA loan.  There are still some closing costs involved but not as many as a conventional or an FHA.

Even an FHA loan requires closing costs to be paid unless the house is being purchased using a HUD program.

Refinancing though, they’ll roll it all in as long as the equity is there.

Just out of curiosity, what is the legal status of Black History Month?  Was it Federally recognized by some resolution, is it recognized by individual states, or is it just a PR kick by the black community?

Work hard save and invest!
then you get to pay cash for your new home like me and the wife.
We are at the age that we did not want a mortage and the tax break for us was not that much.
We just cut a check for $320.000.00
And we still got six figures in investments and IRAs and the like.

People in your 20s please be smart with your money trust me you will need It when you are older.
We all know social security is a joke and my not be around by the time you reach retirement age.

So invest early and smart.

As far as Black history LOL.
Whatever:rolleyes:
If you live in America you ARE an American end of story therefore it should just be American history.
including all the uglliness of slavery.

When is Native American History Month?

Oh wait, we wiped out their history... A Native American History Minute would be 60 seconds too long for what we know about them, or evidently even care.

PC crowd is such of a bunch of jerk asses, I loathe them so much.
