No whining about chutes - sorry to disappoint.
Heres my question:
Say you are above a cloud of green dots fanatically chasing a red dot on the deck about d 800 or even maybe down to 600 off the red dot. The red dot is doing a good job so nothing is really getting resolved very quickly. You know you can lead turn or drop and be on the 6 much closer and above for the shot, (above or somewhere to avoid killshooter), do you do it? Do you call it out first if you do? Do people have a true basis for being pissed?
How do you deal with an over the shoulder shooter, just pull into their tracers and kill em?
The above is one of my pet peeves, sure sucks especially in furball when a bunch of tracers come by you and its your own guy shooting them. My first guess is its the nme so I hit defense right away, leaving my target to someone else. Usually happens when I'm at d400 and my bishie friend is at about d475 it seems.

No usually not, since if the red guy was going to be dead anyway, he'll be either dead or turning long before you get down to him. Generally it's pretty easy to tell if the guy is getting away or not. And if he is, of course come on down if ya want. If he isn't getting away, then it's a waste of your time and alt so don't bother. plus you don't want to be a part of a slavering gangbang, right? ;)

No, there's really no need to do anything. If they killshooter themselves, that's too bad for them, but no need to be vindictive from your POV. :)

Hehe, yeah, that can be annoying. But if you get into this situation often, it indicates to me that maybe your SA could stand improvement. ;)

In those situations I hold back until I can see that the friendlies aren't able to either catch the bad guy or shoot him down, I'll make one high speed non-firing pass on the bogie to get him to do a break turn. Hopefully this will give the friendlies that were chasing him a chance catch up or to shoot him down. If the friendlies still haven't brought the bad guy down, then that is when I'll fully engage the target.
ack-ack

Due to net lag, in most of those situations your friend is at d400 on his front end, and he sees you at d475.
-
Really?? Didn't know net lag made that much difference. So he probably thinks I'm shooting over his shoulder? If thats the case then I'm cured, it will cease to bother me.

Red cons are like city buses and women....
If one gets away, another will be along in a couple minutes.
-
I figure if you dogfight someone from 8, 10k down to the deck you've earned the kill.
As long as hes saddled up I'll stay high & watch.
If hes NOT saddled up I'll ask, or make a low pass to disrupt the enemy but not shoot.
First come first served, = best rule unless he yells for help or is obviously outnumbered.
Show some respect & some will come back to you. Steal every kill in sight & people will do the same to you and rightfully so.
-
I for one always ask if pilot needs help if he's on con's 6. but if con on his no ? asked i'm down as fast as I can. And if 2 of us on con and i'm over taking lead plane I always anouce "Coming By" hold fire. this is only if con pulling away friend or if friend is 800 yds and not closing.
367th trys to call out 6's every chance they can and I wish more would say coming by hold fire.
To me when I see 4or more guys on cons 6 its the 4th thru 8th that are imature pilots, It is best to gain alt for next wave. But too many imature pilots don't see big picture. And probally wonder why con's always have alt on them.
P.S. i've seen every side have conga lines behind 1 low con at thier base. Even have screen shot of 14 guys chasing 1 con on the deck. This makes me smile know that 1 con can bring most pilots down from a good base CAP. most have alot to learn my padawins.
-
I stay out of a 1v1 if it looks like the guy has it handled. 2v1 and greater I move on to something else. When vulching, or in some other mindless furball mess, the rules go out window just like for everyone else.
In the example of the first and original post. If the enemy is in a fast/faster plane that they are probably not going to catch (or not before enemy reaches help) I am in but I am not diving into anyone's *reasonable* gun range.
-
If I am going to be zooming down, passing in front of friendly, I normally give a quick vox call to friendly telling him I will be coming in front of him. If I bounce down for kill, depends on how much alt I have to loose & how many friendlies & nme are in vacinity.
-
Cloud of friendlies.... unless the guy is pulling away I'll pass on this.
As far as the guy shootin over your shoulder... well this bugs me a little bit too BUT: if the guy can get the kill before me and he is farther away... he deserves it.
If the enemy is pulling away from the cloud, I'll zoom down for the bounce... if the guy gives me a shot I'll take it... if he breaks, I'll let the horde have him.
As far as tracers going by your shoulder and you going defensive: Well, some friendlies will fire past you to get you to break off so they can have the kill to themselves. Work on your SA a bit so you know where those bullets are coming from...taking frequent looks around will prevent this from happening to you.
Some people get pissed if you bounce a low con but ultimately anything w/ a red tag is fair game. I had a guy ***** at me the other day because I "tried to steal his kill" even though he hadn't put a single round into the guy yet. He was mad because he had fought they guy from a higher alt all the way to the deck. I took about 30 secs to get to the fight since I was about on the deck. IMHO if the guy hasn't killed him in that span, the enemy is fair game. You'll get POV's on both sides of this scenario.. neither one is more righteous than the other.. just differing viewpoints.
-
Over the shoulder?
Well, if I'm the guy that initially tangled with the con and you "Drop in", I'll shoot over your shoulder as if you were not there.
Usually, in the planes I fly, I have to fly defensive for a few minutes until the enemy that swooped down for an "easy kill" finally pisses away enough of his energy that I now have him on the ropes.
If you "drop in" to "help" after all that work.. yeah, you'll see my tracers over, under, around and sometimes through you shoulder.
;)

Once 2 of us called out on vox that we were coming past an individual. Both of us had higher closer rates than the person we were warning. As we passed, the nme broke left and we ALL fired on him. Then I got accused of trying to kill shooter the guy who was on the nme first heh.
Sometimes it just doesn't do any good to warn people ;)

Sorry Toad, you jumped :) to the wrong lily pad. I don't drop in on fights unannounced. I'm talking about shoulder shots after I've been on the guy for bit. Maybe sometimes the second guy in line gets impatient, but 1. I like the chase & 2. I like to conserve my ammo, especially in the LA5. But I think if I'm dang close to the 6 and matching someone move for move, the S&P boys should give me some room.
The first question I posed is something I see quite a bit, usually after an offensive wave has been beat back and people are chasing stragglers. I usually just watch for a bit. I think I'll do the swoop and get em to break thing from now on, no kill for me but still fun. I always laff when I see 10 guys chasing 1 dot.
Gawd, there seems to be a lot of new bishies lately, has HT got a Xmas marketing campaign going on? It seems to me the # of people on when I get on is steadily and consistently increasing. What happens around 650 - 700 players mark? Can the game take it? Can they increase the max limit when necessary?
-
Usually it's easy to see if you can catch the NME before the chasing gangbang pack can. If so I dive down and take a shot, which is not easy with a G-10 :D If I don't have to put myself in a situation that is too disadvanteagous I take a shot at absolutely anything that I can get at. If someone else wants that kill, he should have gotten to the intended target first.
So a shameless killstealer then? I only once got accused of that when I managed to get a few lucky rounds in a 262 when flying a La-5. And the one who accused me of kill stealing was the 262 pilot who acted rather cheerfully and thanked all chasers for a good fight.
When flying a G-10 with it's godawful maneuverability it takes time to set up a firing pass and more often then not a more maneuverable fighter will get 'my' kill. Then I just say 'well done' and fly on.
-
The "you" is generic. Unwad them, I wasn't talking to you.
-
Toad,
Look, chimp, they're not wadded. Cant you see the #$%* :)?

We'll see about that.

Wait until they kill the plane, then dive in for the chute. You can call out the chute if you want. But this is not advised if an FDB is in the area, as that might rouse him out of his stupor and you risk losing the chute.
How do you deal with an over the shoulder shooter?
Shoot faster.
-
True, but I figure a truly noble pilot would allow the original shooter to due a graceful loop and return to rid the sky of that horrid watermelon hanging arrogantly at the end of that unsightly silk and rope thang.

As a general rule, if there's a crowd chasing some Dilbert, I just watch in amusement. If the Dilbert turns towards me, all bets are off. Otherwise they can have their fun.
However, when the shoe is on the other foot, these same pack dogs will barge into anyone's fight uninvited. When I spot a recognized kill stealin' weenie, I'll pick his thieving pocket in a heartbeat and leave him huffing and puffing and spewing venom.
There are fun ways to deal with those greedy characters who shoot over one's shoulder too.
Last tour I flew the A-20 as a fighter quite a bit. I was tangling with a 109 who tried to BnZ me (the silly boy), and after about three minutes I was just about on his tail when a pair of fellow Rookdorks tried to reap the rewards of my hard work. A 190 and La-7 dive in behind and start shooting over my shoulder. I simply tightened my turn and pulled into their tracers, then drilled the hapless 109. As I pulled off the dying 109, I had the reassuring view of two chutes drifting down to the ground. It just doesn't get better than that. The pissing and moaning was epic. What was really funny was that because the killshootered Rooks both bailed, the 109 driver rode it in and got credit for both kills!!! :rofl
My regards,
Widewing

Truthfully it all depends on who's doing the chasing. I'd agree with the majority view here...stay high...realistically most of the time your not goingh to get the kill anyway....however....every once in awhile it's the guys doing the chasing you wish you could kill... what you need to do is roll in on his (there) 6 zoom under pull up thru the tracer stream and merrily zoom on back up with the bogie and 1,2,3 or more "good guys" all spining in. Have I actually ever done it...nope...have I THOUGHT about it...HELL yes.

Yeppers I keep a little list of rude bish handy too. It's my no 6 call no assistance list. People do get off of it though.
