Title: Need video card advice plz
Post by: Skyfoxx on December 18, 2003, 09:59:38 AM
I'm in the process of building a new system, a 3ghz P4 on a Asus P4C 800-E Deluxe motherboard. Everything is ordered except the video card and I'm uncertain which way to go on that.

Does anyone have some advice on a good video card selection? This will be primarily a gaming machine, mainly AH.

Thanks in advance.

I'm very happy with my ATI AIW 9800 Pro.  Runs AH at 85fps (monitor refresh rate) 99% of the time.  Of course the 9800 XT is faster still but I needed the AIW feature set so that's what I got.  System scored 18,800+ on 3DMark2001.
I'm also happy with ASUS Radeon 9600XT on my second computer (1.5GHz P3).  No problems running AH.  I haven't checked the frame rate.  System scored 7800 on 3DMark2001.

Skyfoxx--

How much do you want to spend?

Primarily a gaming machine, and money no object--ATI 9800xt.

Lol ya'll:rofl

Only caveat would be some driver issues possibly with radeon cards still. I think you have to be VERY careful switching a Geforce for a Radeon. I don't have personal experience.

I just switched a Geforce 3 Ti500 for  5700 Ultra. Very happy. I felt a real high end card would be wasted on my XP2000+ machine.  If you have a high end machine and can afford it, sure go with the best!:D

If it was me building a new rig I would go Top Dog.

It will last you that much longer. That means 9800XT or Top Geforce. Take your pick, it won't make that much difference.

Thanks for the replies. I initially wanted to stay under $200, but since I don't want to upgrade for a while, I think I'll go with the ATI 9800 pro and be done with it ... for a while. :)
Have always been an nvidia user, but sounds like ATI is on top now.

I use a 9500, (I think it is) works just fine for me, I have frames in the 70's, 80's. Even in Ah2 I get 50ish.

It's kind of ironic that all of these fan boys start screamin' 9800 pro everytime someone asks. They always say the top of the line card.

That's pretty good.  What resolution do you run it at, and with what options (in game and in control panel)?  With the 9800xt, I run at 1600x1200 with the control panel options on and default vid settings in game.  Get about 50-60 fs pretty consistently.  Maybe that's low?

If money is not an object, get the top of the line card.  If money is an object, then think about it first.  Not sure why you have a chip on your shoulder? ;)
