Title: We need some information
Post by: Skuzzy on December 19, 2003, 11:29:51 AM
We need some information from the Beta group.

Here is the setup:
1)  Rename or delete the AH2 "settings" folder.
2)  Start AH2.
3)  Pick whatever video resolution you want, but we would like to see 1024x768 included. Do not change any other settings from default.
4)  Go Offline
5)  Note the FPS and Triangle count, with the clipboard down and in the tower.
6)  Note any video settings you have for your video card.  Such as anti-alias, anistrophic filtering and what levels.  Ideally, we would like to see the test with all that disabled as well.

Do not make any adjustments to the default video settings in the game from the clipboard.

Here is a helpful form:

CPU Type/Speed:
Video Card Make/Model/Ram: (you can get this from DXDIAG)
In-game video resolution:
Frame Rate:
Triangle Count:
Other video settings: AA?  AF?

Thank you folks.  Appreciate the help.

Easycor, did you move or rename the AH2 settings folder?  The triangle count you show does not look right.

Remember, we need to be able to do static comparisons, so make sure you are at all defaults (except the resolution) for everything.

Yes Skuzzy, it created a new settings folder with the following files:

video8
wl0.pwl
flight
freq
room

I checked, the in-game video setup, it was reset to the defaults.
Remember, it's only a 32 meg vid card if it makes any difference.

Hope this helps.

No problem Skuzzy. Well almost no problem. I can't tell for sure that there is no AA or AF. If I set to max performance these settings say application preference. If I go custom the lowest I can choose for both is 2X.

Anyhow, I set to max performance for both 1024X768 and 1600X1200

Interesting numbers..

At 16 or 32 BIT it's pretty close. I use 1024X768 all the time, so here it goes!

System is:

Asus A7N8X Dlx rev 1.04
Athlon 2500+ (Barton core) O/C'd to 2.2 GIG
BIOS hacked Radeon 9700 PRO/ 128 MEG
2XGeil 256 MEG RAM in dual mode
DX9A, Win 2K Pro, Omega 2.4.96C Drivers

Results were:

accross the board at 16 or 32 BIT:

FR's in the tower, no map up 78-80
Triangle count, at all settings 3651
Vid mem used: 29-42 MEGS

playing with the in game sliders I was able to get much better results.. but that wasn't this test.

From a "below-min-specs" system, conditions as specified for the test:

CPU Type/Speed: PIII 550E o'clocked to 682 (124 on the bus, 512MB PC100)
Video Card Make/Model/Ram: Radeon 8500 128MB
In-game video resolution: 1024X768
Frame Rate: 14
Triangle Count: 3658
Other video settings: default
(ATI control panel not loaded, using Catalyst 3.06 drivers v 4.14.0001.9113)

I've played with settings and have been able to get the FRs up to 27 in the tower w/clipboard minimized. Flight is actually OK, dogfights online aren't hampered by any choppiness. Terrain display and interface are where the system's deficiencies show - terrain objects such as trees and towers are choppy-looking until close up, interface controls are sluggish. Better than I expected!

Yes, first resize your screenshots to about 800x600 or less which works well, and save in jpg format, using Photoshop/PaintshopPro or similar.  Then post your resized jpgs onto a website - if you don't have webspace, there are several people around offering it, like Saw.  Once on a website, click the IMG tag above, paste in the complete url of your picture and click OK - Submit your message and your picture will show.  :)

Pretty amazing the percentage who replied that can't follow your simple instructions so you can get a good comparison.  Not exactly Navy Seal material, I guess.

Patch 10/setting folder renamed

CPU Type/Speed: AMD Barton 2500
Video Card Make/Model/Ram: Ati 9500 pro / 128 (4.14 drivers)
In-game video resolution: 1024 x 768 @ 32
Frame Rate: 51 (initial “settings” clipboard)/ 45 (map clipboard)
Triangle Count: 4939 (initial “settings” clipboard)/ 6340 (map clipboard)
Other video settings: AA? AF? Both set to “application preference” with no notable difference when both set to the lowest manual setting (x2). Textures set to “high quality”

Additional
MB: Asus A7V8X-X (latest bios/latest 4-in-1 drivers)
Ram: 512 @ 333/CL2/fast timings
OS: Win 98SE updated/DX 9.0b
Spyware clean and minimal taskbar, etc.

My AH results seem to be perhaps a bit slower (perhaps not) than similar 9500/9600 pro users and, of course, much slower than Nvidia users. I hope this gets resolved since I don’t really feel in the mood to spend another couple of hundred dollars on an Nvidia video card (say a 5700 ultra) just to get better performance in AH but equal or slightly less performance anywhere else.

My 3Dmark 2003 score is right where it should be for this hardware, maybe a bit on the faster side (3531) and my UT2003 benchmarks are also pretty close.

LOL. I loaded AH2 build 12 on my "B" machine with less CPU Mhz and slower RAM -- but a Gforce 3 -- and got 1-2 fps higher than my faster machine with an Ati 9500 pro (also retested on build 12 with no improvement in FPS over 11).

The "B" machine

CPU Type/Speed: AMD 2100
Video Card Make/Model/Ram: Gforce 3 /64 mb
In-game video resolution: 1024 x 768 @ 32
Frame Rate: 53 (initial “settings” clipboard)/ 46 (map clipboard)

Other video settings: AA? AF? both to 0/application control

Discoverd that quality settings, other than AA & AF, on the vid card have no effect in the game.  Based on my results, DUH. should have figured that a bit earlier. Results in Beta 15 tower no clipboard:

Everything default with my regular \settings folder renamed.

CPU Type/Speed:  P4/1.7
Video Card:  128MB ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
In-game video resolution:  default
Frame Rate:  32
Triangle Count:  4900-5000

While this is not really that different from beta 15, it all feels faster.  Loading times are much reduced, FPS away from fields is higher, and I can see buildings further away than before.

Test on Beta 16:

System:
Soltek SL75 FRN2 RL
AMD mobile Barton 2500+ @ 210X10.5
512 MB  OCZ PC4000EL Dual Channel Gold
WD Raptor 37gig Raid
GeForce 3 Ti 200 64MB 4X AGP
Windows 2000 Pro Latest upgrades

Frame rates: 74
Video Mem 63.3 MB Used 33.6
Resolution 1024X768
Triangle count 4957 (spikes to 5002)
FSAA off

Settings were absolute default on a fresh download and install of Beta 16 patch, original version was Beta 15.

My frame rate is much the same as AH, it is 75 there and never varies. It is 74 here and never varied in Beta 14, we'll see about 16 soon.  I have not actually flown AHII since Beta 14, and then only once. I will try to fly some this week.

edit: I took a quick hop before heading to work, without even really setting anything up. In the air, even behind a smoking plane, I had 75 FPS.  When looking at ground objects the FPS did drop to around 60 FPS. I have not overclocked the Geforce 3 card, it is at default settings.

Hope this helps.
