8X is the standard of the day but 4X isn't that much slower. Your best bang for the buck would be a ATI 9600xt or a GForce FX 5600.
-
thanks for the reply, so if i want 8x do i have to change the mother board???
-
Yes you need a new mobo, you would be better off to upgrade your whole system.
-
thanx for the help mobo ,much appreciated!!!

Circuitcity is selling the PNY FX5700 Ultra for $159 after rebates.

I got a 5700 Ultra for my 2 yr old system. Its fine and runs at AGP 4X. I doubt it's woth buying a real high end card for an existing system unless it's very fast or you are soon gonna buy a new rig to put it in.
I know I'll update my whole rig in a couple of years by which time all current cards will be well obsolete as will AGP itself!:)
Also god knows when that killer app (Half Life 2) is going to show. Maybe never.

Thanks for replying gents i have an iqon industries putter with p4 processor 2.4 gig ,80 gig hard drive,256 mb ram, asus motherboard[P4S533-VM],19inc monitor and it all cost £800. only the motherboard only takes upto 4x graphics cards which is really dissapointing,so im really not sure wether to upgrade and get something built or just stick to what ive got.i use my pc for mainly surfing the web or playing games, although my graphics seem to be aceptable and i dont get any brake up or anything like that,i havent been able to check it against any other pc,s. anyway once again thanks for your time!!!:aok

you have SiS® 962L integrated VGA on that main board
http://www.asus.com.tw/mb/socket478/p4s533-vm/specification.htm (http://www.asus.com.tw/mb/socket478/p4s533-vm/specification.htm)
and here is the spec's on the sis chipset
http://www.sis.com/products/chipsets/integrated/pentium4/651.htm (http://www.sis.com/products/chipsets/integrated/pentium4/651.htm)
As for adding a video card AE fx 5600, ati 9600-9800pro/xt you shouldnt have any problem at all on this mainboard
(just disable the vga in the bios after you install the new card then load the new cards drivers)

Thanks Roscoroo for taking the time to look up that info for me I shall definatly pick one of those, could you just confirm wether or not my motherboard is a faily good board even after fitting a new graphics card?..:aok

I'd say by looking it over that its a decent onboard vga /sound ect .. type main board .. its at the higher end anyway of those types of main boards ... (just by my comparison of them )
I'm not a fan of the micro atx form (the small mainboards )
but the deal you got on it defentally was worth it ..
I bet if you added some more ram to it first it would really wake it up ... 256mb's isnt really enough with XP and onboard vga (remember its gonna use part of your ram for the onboard vga... 64mb's most likely) if you add a video card to it you will gain that 64mb's back though ..

Just a suggestion, if you have the money and any old video card, just go to the ati website and you can order a radeon 9800 pro for just 249 if you trade in your old card. Here's the link :

i wonder if theyed take a 1 or 2 mb card tee hee ...
thats actually quite a deal .....
-
Shoot, if you're your going to upgrade the board, I use and love
http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socket478/p4c800-e_d/overview.htm
and it leaves plenty of room to grow!
Then pickup an 8X ATI card :)
