Title: What joystick are you guys using?
Post by: Hakster on May 21, 2001, 04:03:00 PM
First of all, sorry for posting this here, it should probably be in the Hardware & Software forum but there seem to be a LOT more people in this forum so...

I´m about to buy a new joystick, a Saitek X-36 usb, and I´m a bit curious what joystick you guys are using.
Any opinions about the x-36 welcome.

Thanks in advance

Hakster

TM w/throttle and pedals.

I think the next setup for me will be the above Saitek/CH pedal combo.

I like the old TM and it's been reliable for 3 years but.. time to get with more buttons, etc.

I use a Saitek X36 USB to fly Aces High, also used a CH Force FX stick. If you'd like a config file for your X36 to get you started drop me a line and I'll mail you mine, its setup for fighter and bomber ops using the slider switches.

X-36 USB with CH Pro USB Pedals... great combination, plus now with the latest patches you can get it to work with other games too.

Highly recommended.

I use all CH products;Pro throttle, Rudder pedals, and F-16 Combatstick; the only thing I would change is the Combatstick for the Fighter stick. More options with the later. Get the best Hakster, you won't regret it!

I use CH F16 Combatstick (10 buttons + coolie + throttle slider)and the CH pro peds, they work fine for me. I am thinking of adding a CH throttle to this collection to make it complete but i dunno if i can remember all the programmed buttons on the throttle than  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif).

I'm using a Micro$oft Precision Pro 2 USB... so far it's rock-solid. I plan on scrapping it for the Thrustmaster Cougar when they release it. Right now, I've got an F16 FLCS/TQS/RCS collecting dust in the closet. Too many spikes.

Non USB CH Janes Combat Stick with CH Pro Throttle and CH Pedals.  Little spikie after 5 years but still going strong.  Have purchased the USB CH Combat Stick and Pro Pedals and am waiting for the USB Pro Throttle.

Well, I gives a reserved recommendation on the X-36 as it goes thru HAT switches like sh*t thru a goose at which point ya gotta send it in for replacement or fix. (Creamo can confirm this as well as myself and others)

I'm currently using a MS FF Joystick (connected via gameport), the Saitek X36 throttle (USB), and CH USB Pro pedals.

Saving up my pennies for the TM Cougar tho......it's ALL metal and will be THE TOP OF THE LINE when it hits the streets at $299 I'm gonna need to do alotta wifeypoo asskissin' to get it but the features list is  gonna make this one expandeable stick.

Read this: Dogfighter Preview (http://www.dogfighter.com/reviews/show.php3?review=981988051#HOTAS) and TM Cougar HOTAS at E3 (http://www.dogfighter.com/briefs/show.php3?brief=990137284)

Well I have a cheap $30 TM Top Gun which works quite well..no spiking at all for the 3 years ive had it..and I treat it rather roughly lol. I got it hooked with a SUNCOM SFS throttle which gives me 2 more hat switches, dual throttle and all the goodies I need.

Im on the market now for a set of rudder pedals... any advice welcome. I've been looking at these http://www.chproducts.com/pcgear/chpedal.shtml (http://www.chproducts.com/pcgear/chpedal.shtml)  (yeah im a cheap bastard!).

Note: my j-stick and throttle both use serial cable.. the j-stick is hooked to the throttle, the throttle to the sound card. if I get that set of pedals, I dont know where'd id plug them into =P

Any suggestions? any USB rudders below 100 bucks out there?  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

MS Sidewinder Force Feedback 2... optical, hassle-free, compact... Will eventually migrate to something more "pro" if they make it optical  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

MS Pre Pro 2 USB.

The price was right.  It's not the best, but I can get by with it.  Can't beat it for reliability and price.

Saitek Cyborg Gold USB stick, CH Pro Pedals (gameport).  Love the stick.  The pedals are okay, but I would rather have a slightly wider placement and longer throws.

Saitek X36 Stick/throttle combo on USB, CH analog pedals.  Works really well in games that let you map rudder to any axis, but it requires a registry hack to work with some other games due to the rudder flipper on the throttle.

BTW the Con is a GREAT place to pick up free stuff like this...  Nearly everyone got SOMETHING at the dinner raffle, and whoever wings with Drex in the tournament will get first choice at the LARGE STACK of STUFF (tm) after winning the tourny.  Again.  (sorry LLB)  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Also check into GameCommander2 voice commands, it's worth the price (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Saitek X36 Combo USB in conjunction with CH Pro Pedals (gameport)

The Saitek offers a exceptional variety of buttons and is very easy to programm. The design is great and the controls are smooth.

2 problems I had so far:
- x-axis went out of calibration (cannot be calibrated in windows joysetup - found a workaround)
- one of the coolie hats is really worn out (can't get a proper 5,7-view anymore)

Great HOTAS for the price. But I am waiting for the Cougar or the new CH Fighterstick USB - I really wish they would do something optical!!!

Thanks for all your replies.
Looks like Saitek, MS and CH are the most common joysticks here.
If I could afford it I would love to go for a Cougar but its out of my pricerange at the moment, so I will go for the Saitek, this time.

Cheers

Used CH Fighter Stick for a looong time. The issue with faster boards (unable to program buttons) plus the lack of solution to that problem in Spain moved me to Saitek Combo.

Saitek Combo is GREAT value for money although the stick's Hat buttons quality lacks severely. I just worn out the first one, which is currently disabled.

Hope it helps,

Pepe

[edit] Just forgot two points. First, dunno if gameport verstions still lurking around but don't mess with them, go for the USB version.

Second, my Saitek Combo is approximately 1 year of INTENSIVE use  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) old, to give you a fair idea of Hat reliability.

I use the CH Force FX,  CH Pro Throttle, and an old, old TM RCS that I have modified to allow me to fly with my heels on the floor. Like Sancho, I like the wider spread and longer throw on these pedals.

As a matter of interest, other than modifying the feet placement, I also removed the coil spring that had a tendency to break with 1/2" bungee cords. The good one's like the truckers use. It gives me more feedback on how much I have my pedals moved because it gets stiffer the further you push em.

I have not had to replace any portion of any of the components  other than the spring on the rudder pedals and have found them to be trouble free.

A very curious combination:
Saitek X36 USB plus F16 FLCS (pots dead) + TQS + CH pedals.
TQS in digital mode works fine as a RMP control.

Sidewinder Precision 2 optical USB.

I may see what rudder pedals would work for me one of these days.  I find myself applying throttle without intending to, especially in tense situations.

For now, the Sidewinder works great

MS Precision Pro I optical.

Works like a dream as long as you dont rough it up. It won't get spiky, but it develops a slack centering if twisted too hard.

Anyway, I'm not planning to switch, must be the only m$ product I like.

Microsoft Force Feeback 2 here.

It's such a vast improvement over the original one that it's untrue. Smoothest, most responsive joystick I've ever used.

JUst waiting for the selection of USB throttles and rudder pedals to improve, then I'm going shopping  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

BTW if anyone is ever board and wants to play with their 'twisty stick' try mapping the 'rudder' to panning the view and the 'throttle' to view pitch. It's well odd =)
