Title: Who needs Kazaa?
Post by: Sandman on December 19, 2003, 11:02:07 PM
...or WinMX.

Gentlemen, there's a new app...  MUTE (http://mute-net.sourceforge.net/)

Quote
"MUTE is a new file sharing network that provides easy search and download functionality while protecting your privacy. It does this by routing all messages through a network of neighbour connections, using virtual addresses and encrypting all the traffic (using RSA for public/private keys and AES for the actual encryption). MUTE's routing mechanism is inspired by ant behaviour. The program is available for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X."

For Mp3 sharing, I haven't found anything better than Soulseek (http://www.slsknet.org).  Unfortunately, the RIAA witch hunt has people scared, so there's not as many files available as 6 months ago. :(

Vulcan's got it right. ;)  Screw the p2p crap.  NNTP is the way.

But don't tell anyone, or it'll be ruined like everything else.  LOL.

LOL.  I just use my ISP's newsserver, it's plenty fast and it's free.

The real reason I think NNTP beats p2p is that p2p is mostly only useful for downloading things you already know the name of.  If I know the name of something, I can easily listen to a sample at iTMS or amazon and buy if I like.  The beauty of usenet is that you can slurp a ton of stuff from the genres you want, and discover new music.  I would say 90% of my CD collection comes from mp3s.

Could someone explain to me how to get access to all of these newsgroups or where to start to learn about NNTP and what progs to get?  I'm the FNG to this stuff.

http://www.newsbin.com

then find the name of your isps newserver (most likely news.myispsname.com)

When you do it for the first time it'll download all the newsgroups names. Then you select which groups you want (like alt.binaries.sex.bestiality which the most popular group with AH pile-its)
