After looking through the bios I have a few questions. I noticed that the cpu clock is set to the min, is there any benifet to turning that up? Is there any harm in doing that. Also the default settings are for optimized, should I load the high performance settings? I don't want to crash the system or somethingbad like that.
Thanks!
Bob

Turning th clock up (overclocking) can increase the performance of your computer noticably, but you have to do a little research first. Post your system specs. There are a few people in here who can help you , i am sure.
the main thing you have watch for is cpu temperature, (if your system has a sensor for it). If it doesnt, then you are playing with fire:rofl

The few times I have checked my temp on the puter it has been running about 40 degrees C. I have 2 fans and the round cables, to aid in cooling.
Other specs are:
p4 1.7 gh
gforce mx440 64 mb card (soon toi be upgraded)
512mb pc2100 ddr ram
60gig hard drive
Is there any thing else you need to know?

The manufacture and model number of the main board would really help also
( if you dont know who made it give a look in side and get the letters /numbers off of it )
that way we can look up the spec's on it 1st and go from there.
some MB's over clock easy .. others take a revised Bios , just the right ram, a modification , ect

Yea..i think i would go ahead and upgrad the gfmx440 first, and then look into overclocking. That is the weak link in your system as it stands. You may not notice anything if you overclock your cpu and try to cram it throught the mx440.

My mobo book had a guide to overclocking. Sayin what is "safe". Runnin a 1.8 P4. I have no clue what mobo, I'll see if I can find that book.

Yea..I overclocked my 2.6 to 3.3 and it really does make a difference in overall performance, but I am pushing 65C on my cpu temperature so i will call it a day. I am not gonna get the liquid cooling and all that stuff.

Ok, I ran the belarc advisor and it came up with this:
Award Software 6.00PG 11/09/01
This was under the section for the mobo. Does it help?
I apreciate the help guys, not new to puters, just never got this deep before.

That sounds like your bois version.

yep thats the bios version ...
your gonna have to grab the flashlight and look over the main board theres always a string of letters/numbers somewere on it . or the exact model and make of the pc sometimes they can be looked up that way

Thanks guys, will do that when I get a chance.

Belarc Advisor should give you that information.
