A call to all forum gear heads:
I've been to a couple of other forums and figured I'd try here too. My Jeep's tranny is making a helova noise. It vibrates like hell and has sort of a "gear wine" to it. It is an automatic and does it in all gears it seems. Could the torque converter also be the possible culprit.
-
ahh jeep transmissions.
they still get them from the lowest bidder? or they all crysler now?
my last one had a ford engine gm tranny and fisher price breaks.
your gonna have to pull it anyway. ask several garages who does their tranny work ( alot farm it out now) they will ususaly charge you a couple hundred to tell you whats wrong. you gotta trust your tranny guy so choose well. and bring a check book (think navy aid, or at least dont forget them.) my last one cost 1300 bucks for a manual just rebuilt.

Check the flux capacitor.

cherokee forum (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=251)
they have forums for other models to. haven't been alot of expert advice there but there is a lot of "been there, done that" advice for things that are common on different models.
could you be in between selections (p/t 4wd, f/t low, f/t hi, 2wd). on my cherokee at least they are notorious for being screwed up on drive selection, almost all eventually need some sort of aftermarket fix.
Btw- as far as who makes what. I've become convinced that they just take a truck around to all the auto manufacturers and load it up with left over parts, from these they make jeeps. I enjoy driving it, but when it comes to working on it, it is the most frankenstien POS I've ever turned a wrench on.

Whew, I thought this thread was going to be about something else.
-
no-doubt, was reluctant to open it at first.
-
why was i expecting funked, creamo, and airhead to be featured in this thread?
what a dissapointment
-
thanks for the replys...sorry to dissapoint those looking for transvestite stuff or whatever.
What really pisses me off is the fact that the thing will be paid for in like 2 months.....just replaced the engine last summer and now the tranny. I know how to pull one but just dont know jack about rebuilding them. I got a week off coming up the only thing i need is a tranny jack. I think i'm gonna pull it myself then take it to a shop...save on some labor costs.
-
PS I read tonite all the horrors people have had with chrysler transmisions over the last ten years and I'm at least happy to say this one lasted 125,000 miles. Engine would have lasted longer but it over heated in the middle of the desert on an illfated road trip to vegas bout 2 years ago.
-
if its not a chain whine in the transfer case .. then its most likely a worn out trans .. clutches and seals are shot
smell the fluid if its burnt smelling then pull the pan ... look for black / grey soot and metal particals
when it starts sliping its bands are shot .. its rebuild time
besure you get a fresh converter in the rebuild also ... dont let them reuse the old one its gonna have metal in it to .

overheating is the major complaint on the jeep forums. the straight-6 4.0 with the closed system is the worst. who ever thought up that closed system was a real prettythang. everyone has overheat problems with them.
what model/year are you driving?
if it is time to replace the tansmision, here's a good place to start. I saw this sight recomended on the jeep forums, I don't have any personal experience with them as far as quality or service, but it would give you a quick idea what kind of cost to expect http://www.rebuilt-auto-transmissions.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_main.html?catid=31

Buy a German car next time. :D

Thats what I would do, they'll probably give you a new tranny (rebuilt) in exchange for your broken one. As far as fixing it at home, you need alot of special tools. I wouldnt even bother.

Get a car from asia, they are bulletproof but ugly as he** imo.
My gf wants an X5 or ML and they look good, but i hope she gets a Nissan or Toyota with diesel. Im not gonna use it, but i dread the incoming bills later on.
Would rather have an Audi A6 or Bmw 5 series stationwagon but she is the boss :aok

Here I thought subject was something else, but then I've been reading to much AGW OT :)
-
dang I came in here expecting to make fun of certain peoples arguing over accessorys and the like.
Did you hit a coyote? I did once, trans made a funny noise as well.
-
Does the Trans slip at all?? Does it slip while changing gears?? If it were just a noise w/ no vibration I would think it maybe to be the front shaft bearing. If its not slipping, your trans is prolly ok...
If its vibratring or hesitating or perhaps vibrating in and out in overdrive and other gears, I think your right on your first assumption... Sounds like a torque converter... 8)

Gunn,
I can say that the 1st tranny lasted me 100K that was on my 93 Grand Cherokee. That sound you hear is indeed the torque converter. Most common failure. You can get a rebuilt one from the dealer installed for about 1500-1800. With a full 36K mile warranty and 2 years. I put another 80 K on it and towed a boat and a trailor for work before moving to a different car.
I can say I'll buy another jeep, was the best dang car I've owned.
-
yea but if you had a toyot it would still be pulling trailers at 200,000 everything but clutch belts starter and timing chain original. ok and muffler.
i dearly loved my jeep but they are crap.
buy a toyota just as made in america as the crysler.
hell you can buy one as old as your jeep and still get more life out if it that the new jeep. you just cant beat um.
-
I'm a professional transmission builder, give me some more information and i might can help you. And no it's not the converter. And vader the worst transmissions jeep has ever used WERE made by Toyota.
-
...when was the last time you changed the gear oil?

sorry should have been more specific. I was referring to the plymouth emblem.
bad pic found after brief search:

I changed the gear oil when I changed all the hoses/belts plugs/wires 3 months ago.
Zmeg, I have the cab cover off on the inside and I can place my hand on the tranny while revving and I feel a vibration. When I rev it I hear a low pitch wine that sounds like a gear wine. It happens in all gears and in idle. Recently I when and Retourqed all the bolts connecting the tranny to the engine and flywheele to drive plate. This seemed to fix it for about 10 seconds then it came back.
Here's the other half of my delema....on the bell house is the Crank Position Sensor (CPS). It reads notches in the flyweel and sends timing adjustments to the computer. Well I'm not sure if this is working right either cause I get a lot of vibration from the tranny. Its like they both are contributing to the problem.

Its a 93 wrangler with an Inline 4.0 I've checked out alot of the jeep forums but as soon as the people there hear automatic....they start pulling there hair out running away screaming somthing
-
gunslinger i had this happen to my car
turned out it was a bent rod in the engine itself. If it happens in all gears and at all speeds you can look to the engine and not the transmission.
A bundle to fix so you might consider getting rid of it.
-
Engine is brand new
-
Sounds like a lineup pin may have been left out between eng & trans when the eng work was done. If this is the case you will have damage to the flywheel, converter & front pump. Take the pan off the trans and look for steel filings. If you have to have it rebuilt most shops ould rather have the truck with the trans still in it. Sorry I can't give you any good news. BTW thats not a chrysler trans its an AW4 made by asian warner(toyota)

OK, thx for the pointer loser--not a big MJF fan meself, but I take it that's what the flux cap looks like. ;) Bigsky, I knew about the delorean, just not the mopar. :) Yeah I have to say toyotas are great reliability-wise except the transmissions. I've had two trans rebuilds on my automatic camry in 220K miles. And yeah, I do change the trans oil. Rest of the car is fine despite being treated like dirt. Helluva engine.
-
Whats the year and model engine size on that jeep. I am the parts manager at a jeep dealer. I might be able to help you with it.

93 YJ wrangler Inline 4.0 Automatic. Mostly stock
PS thanks eveyone for all the posts. And just to ease your curiosity, I checked the Flex Capaciter and it is "flexing" just fine!

Sorry I can't help you more Gunslinger, but getting auto tranny advice is spotty at best. Epecially on the net.
Its true what they say Just Empty Every Pocket

Ok spent the last two hours under my beast and 4 burns on the exaust later:
All the bolts from the tranny to the engine are tourqed properly. The CPS seems fine. I hear the noise in all gears and 4WD H/L. I can definatly feel the vibration/noise coming from the front of the transmission were the torque Converter is. I can Actually SEE the fly wheel conecting to the torque conv wobbleing.
I think I have a bad Tourque Conberter.
Again sorry to all those looking for transvestite info due to title. Icemaw if your working tomorrow I'll probably give you a call.
the fluid was fine. No metal shavings/burnt smell. Its nice and dark red and smells like....well....oil

Do you think maybe the flywheel and TC were not torqued down properly?

that could very well be the case. I've retorqued all the bolts allready but who know the damage may have allready been done.
