Santa brought me a 50" Panasonic LCD RPTV. This TV is awesome for AH. No phosphorous screen burn-in or motion blurring. It is even made for PC's with two VGA inputs. ATI does not support it's native resolution of 1280x720 but it can be added with the Rage 3D tweak app. You also have to edit the AH video config file. The picture doesn't even look stretched in AH, text and cockpit instuments are clear, graphics are fluid and look awesome. Overall, Way Cool. Merry Christmas All.

Any Chance of a digi cam shot of AH on that to show off even more ?

here's part of the picture he has been teasing the rest of his squadmates with.

Not only does he get great christmas gifts like that, when he gets tired of STILL getting shot down he goes out wind surfing there in Hawaii. Unfortunately we get to hear him complain about this stuff all the time !! ;)
-
Man thats pretty sweet,
-
ya we send him out ahead of the rest of the squad to look for bogies. Even at distance those dots look like sparrows to him :D

damn, nice gear. of course if I lived in HI I doubt I'd even own any indoor toys.

LOL Capt A,
You are right, I moved here 16 years ago from just south of Portland and I usually don't even eat meals inside here. I quit spending Sundys inside watchin sports like we did in Oregon, but it does still get dark here and I am a profesional beach bum so I get plenty of outside time
LOL,
Joe is right This bigscreen hasn't helped my aim at all.

Cool. I have a rear projection with DVI-in. I have never tried it with my computer.
How does that widescreen resolution look in Aces High? Does the game adjust to show more, or just distorts and stretches the image?
-
I looking to move that direction in a few years. when the last kid moves out (5 more years).
I'm planning on taveling (with the wife along) almost non-stop for work. I should be able to avoid the 1 or 2 months of dead time that apear now and then. with that rate of income and no home to maintain I'm figuring that I can do 9-12 months of work and 6 months in HI before my insurance runs out and I have to go back to work for another year or so.
I'm planning to do that for about 16 years before I can retire there full time. that should give me a good idea where I want to set up a perminant home, so far Kauai seems great to me but I've got a few more islands to check out before I'm sure.
I got hooked on the islands when I went over for work 7 years ago, got the wife thinking in the same direction by taking her to Kauai for a couple weeks last year.

Animal,
A lot of great info in this forum-
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?forumid=26
I also have DVI in but I am using VGA because it is much easier and the quality is almost as good. I bought this TV because it was the most PC friendly and it IS my primary monitor. With DVI in , most widescreens get overscan that can only be reduced with a custom resolution such as 1184x666 and the correct corresponing timings created in Powerstrip. But it can be done. This is prolly not a problem in AH because you can edit the resolution in the video config 7 file, but some games such as Falcon 4.0 and Battlefield 1942 launch a setup screen in 800x600. I read of many problems getting this to work with DVI as it is not very forgiving. I have to play those games in 800x600 and I can sretch or zoom if I like and they do look a bit stetched as any 4:3 picture would. This Panny shows the whole desktop with 7/8" border top n bottom and 3/8" on the sides at 1280x720. Aces High doesn't appear stretched at all to my eye at the Panny's native resolution of 1280x720. In fact it looks horizontally compressed if I switch to normal or 4:3 mode.
If your TV is a CRT I am sure you are also aware of possible burn-in problems. Answers to most of your questions can be found in the avs forum. Good Luck

Capt A,
they aren't jokin when they call it Paradise. I was swimmin in my unheated pool Xmas day. I am never goin back to the mainland. I live on the windward side of Oahu in Kailua, a quiet little beach town away from all the tourists. I can be in Waikiki, Home Depot, Costco, Comp USA, etc in 30 minutes and walk to the beach in 5. Hope ya make your escape from the drizzle and grey skies.

Greetings DAVENRINO :) Nice to hear of some1 living in Kailua, Hi
as I used 2b stationed in Kaneohe Bay w/the USMC, & lived w/my girlfriend in Kailua. Went on quite a few maneuvers on the diffe-
rent islands, Kauai being the prettiest Garden Isle. Reminiscing
about the wonderful times I've had on ALL the islands ;)
Cheers,
Happy1 :D

Kailua rocks, gotta be the sweatest 'sugar-white' beach I've ever been to. by far my favorite on Oahu, I could swim with the turtles there every day.
over-all we liked Kauai better, much more laid-back and not as much of a turist industry feel to it.
I seemed to need to reach for my wallet a lot more often on Oahu. I'm fairly sure sunburns or pale skin double the price of everything.
as soon as I work a do-able solution to income over there I'll be your new neigbor. I'm hoping to work it out soon but if not I can go when I retire in 20 years.

Yup,
I am in awe every time I step onto this beach and windsurfing n kiteboarding are awesome here. I feel vey fortunate to live a short block from this wonder for the last thirteen years. You are right tho this is the Land OF Open Palms. I am glad we bought our house 4 years ago cause prices are outrageous in Kailua now. The price ya pay to live in Paradise. :D

I lived in missouri for 9 years (and pronounced it missery) it's not hell, but you can see it from there.
actually there was some real nice weather for about 2 weeks in early october every year. other than that you just had the 4 seasons- too cold, too wet, too hot, too windy.
to be fair though, weather aside, when it comes to getting a good meal at a reasonable price, you got it all over Hawaii.

I have the same Panny but haven't managed to, hmm, convince the household that it should serve not only as home theatre but also flight sim central.

HeHe,
That's why Santa brought my wife a Rolex at the same time and the Panny went in MY playroom. Also, another advantage of having dogs instead of kids.

DAVENRINO,
We just bought that same model Panny 2 weeks. I love it! I was waiting until Doom 3 or Halflife 2 comes out until I move my PC and hook it up to the 50". Hmm, I may have to move it sooner. :)
I was about to buy the Sony 50" LCD RPTV but there were none in any of the stores I checked. I found the Panny's picture was just as good and the wifey liked the design of it. Glad I got it!
Xbox and DVD's also look good on it. Now, if only my cable company gets HD in my neighborhood.
-
I actually ordered the Sony form CC as they don't stock much in Hawaii. I cancelled when I read bout PC connection problems on the avsforum. The Panny is the most PC friendly. I had to order the Panny also for same reason but got better deal from Sears.

Ahh that's good to hear. I have a feeling once I hook up the PC to the Panny, it wont' be unhooked for a long time.
-
Are you tired of 4 remotes , yet? I highly recomend the HTM MX500/IR Clone universal remote. got mine from Bluedo.com.
It controls all 4 of my components, my air comditioner and my lights. LCD screens and so simple my wife can use it.

Hey, uhh,, where do ya live, exactly. Convinced the wife and kids to stop by for a, visit, yea, a visit. No invite necessary.
(just kidding)
-
Yep the multi-remotes do get to be a pain in the arse. Thanks for the heads up on the universal.

LOL,
Not me, that is not allowed. Actually Sears is next door to CC and I walked in there after cancelling my Sony order. Salesman asked if I found a lower price, and I said no cause CC's price on the Panny was actually $100 higher. He musta needed a sale cause he knocked an additional $400 off Sears already lower price.:D I am still pretty stoked sitting here in my recliner reading this forum ETC...

I'm running it at 1152x648 because of the overscan problems at 1280x720.
Dave, does setting custom in video7 adjust for your overscan (like 1270x720 to keep from losing the edge)? I don't run much other than AH on there, so I haven't put in powerscan and the 1152x648 is fine for desktop stuff.
And yes to those asking, on widescreen resolutions the display area is increased, it's not a stretched image.
-
Fatty,
I am pretty sure you will get overscan in AH at 1280 x 720 if yu get it on desktop. You prolly should try editing the video config file to the custom res you are using for desktop. I would have to use a custom res also if I used DVI input. The VGA input does not bypass the TV's internal controls so I can adjust size with remote and ATI contol panel. Mine isn't perfect either, as it underscans 7/8" vertical and 3/8" horizontal but I do get a 1:1 pixel ratio.
Yup AH looks perfect with no stretch. I modified the video config file in Desert Combat and it does stretch in full screen. I just modded the file in Lock On and it seems to stretch slightly but not as much as DC. I am going to try Falcon 4.0 next if I can figure which of the 2713 files I need to edit.
Dave
-
Fatty, you need to get a set of speakers. :(
-
Davenrino I've got a question on this whole subject. I just got an RCA 52" HDTV Model # D52W20. RCA Model D52W20 (http://www.rca.com/product/viewdetail/0,2588,PI700207,00.html?).
I'm running a fairly decent PC here XP2700+, SBLive Audigy2, Radeon 9800XT 256MB and 1 gig of 333Mhz ram. I'm debating on connecting my pc to the HDTV to play Aces High. It doesn't have a monitor input but does have the DVI inputs. What exactly is needed to hook this all up?
I just got a Harman Kardon 630 AVR receiver and I'am working on getting a Polk speaker surround setup too. I think it'd be pretty wicked to play this all across my home system. Oh and I also picked up the Chameleon Remote for my system. Pretty nice remote to say the least. It can control all of my AV components.
-
Cobra,
You will find all the answers you seek in this forum.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?forumid=26
Most TV's DVI inputs bypass the set's internal controls resulting in overscan (desktop too big for screen). Most use a free prog you can dl called Powerstrip to create a custom resolution so it will fit. I don't have that problem through my VGA input. Another isssue you should be concerned with is screen burn-in. That is why I got a RPTV LCD screen that doesn't suffer from this problem. Most with RP CRT's like yours are very nervous about leaving any static image on their screens for more than a couple minutes. Others say they use their's for puter/games for years with no burn-in. YMMV.
I suggest you read the entire HTPC section of the AVS forum before you proceed. I read it all before I decided which display to buy. Good luck.
Dave

HeHE,
Cobra I see you posted on the AVS forum as I was writing this reply.

I tried to read some of that stuff especially pertaining to the video card I'm running but it's all greek to me. But from what I gather I could use the Powerstrip program and limit my time to purely flying with no down time leaving the screen sitting stagnant and still be ok?
This wouldn't be used constantly by the way cause my wife would kill me. She enjoys the tv more than I do since I'm mainly on here. So it would be for those off times when I just feel like using the HDTV for a monitor or using the pc as a home theatre setup. The majority of the time I'd be using my Sony 19" in the bedroom.
I'm mainly just curious as to what it would look like on the big screen is all.
-
Cobra,
You might try it without powerstrip first. When you move the cursor to the edge of the screen it will scroll to the edge so all desktop controls are still available. I have the same video card and just installed the Cat 4.2 drivers. Under the display tab you can click on the TV monitor button then to the advanced tab. Here you can adjust screen size and position. If you are lucky, it might fit. You will also need to edit the Aces High Video config file to your screens native resolution.
Yup, if you are careful not to leave static images on your screen, you should be OK. If ya get it workin right it really is AWESOME!
