Title: Some AH2 Beta Screen Shots
Post by: Kweassa on December 28, 2003, 06:30:23 PM
Intrigued by Fester's suggestions on new environmental color schemes, using AH2's internal arena settings, I've done some extensive experiments on which colors would feel good.

I gave it a little touch of gausian blurring(0.7 pixels) to make up for the rough edges, since I can't use 1600x1200 resolution or anti-aliasing with AH2(my system sucks).

However, the rest of the pic is 100% AH2-authentic. No 'photoshopping' of any sort. Besides the blurring everything else is straight from AH2 itself.

 Here are the results.. :)

This, is the default sky. In the middle of the day.

Bf109G-10, takeoff and trial flight sequence: with new environmental colors, in the same time of the day as above.

Fw190A-5 trial flight: the first and second pictures are in the middle of the day, the third and fourth pictures are in the evening skies.

Anybody else ever thought that current AH dusks and dawns are just too intense? Fw190D-9 trial flight in a lighter, smoother dusk/dawn colors. 2nd and 3rd pic of test flight in normal conditions.

 P-51D test flight.

If anybody interested, I'll post the color codes for the arena settings I've used. However, I realized that even when I use the same color scheme Feser posted in AH2B discussions, I couldn't get the same results as his. Probably due to little differences in monitor settings or graphic card settings.. but I think it can provide a useful guidline.

Here are the settings I'm using.

The three numbers each stand for RED/GREEN/BLUE values.

ColorDuskFog[day]: 255/149/88
ColorDuskFog[dusk]: 255/138/36

ColorFog[day]: 179/208/238
ColorFog[dusk]: 131/142/187
ColorFog[night]: 21/20/16

ColorLight[day]: 255/255/255
ColorLight[dusk]: 249/202/142
ColorLight[night]: 181/180/173

ColorSky[day]: 149/195/255
ColorSky[dusk]: 111/123/196

ColorSun[day]: 250/255/245
ColorSun[dusk]: 253/240/185

You can leave rest of the values not listed here to the default.

After setting the values, adjust the arena time with a multiplyer of 100 - that will make the clock tick very fast, and you can check the transition of colors of the sky going dawn->day->dusk.

Thanks for posting the settings

But my system runs AHII so slowly that I can't move the mouse slow enough to get the correct numbers entered on the setup screen. And clicking on the sliders once and using the arrow keys doesn't work either.

I opened up the arena.cfg file in the settings folder thinking I could put them in manually, but HT has something going on there that I don't recognize. They don't seem to be using standard RGB or HEX values.

Anyhow, at least I'll have them if I ever get the demo running better.

Thanks again.

Hey, on second thought...

Could I talk you into doing a copy/paste of your arena.cfg file so I can just copy it over into mine?

I noticed that, too, right away. Maybe it's things like that that they'll correct later, while they give higher priority to FM and bugs, etc.

Very good Kweassa.  Instead of using millions of clouds that gobble up fps, it would be neat if you could find the values to make the sky look dull and bleak.

Yes Kev, I've also been thinking of that.

You can easily recreate atmospheric conditions such as dark/stormy skies or general overcast conditions using the new color futzing feature.

Ofcourse, seeing a gray sky without even a single speck of cloud would be quite strange, if one really thinks about it. But generally, the look of it doesn't seem too bad if you try not to think much about it.

I think a sort of 'compromise' can be reached by the creator of the terrain, by cleverly placing clouds in a very thin layer across the sky, and using a dark sky color - to create terrains suited for specific use such as Special Events.

Also, different sky conditions according to the terrain, can be also arranged - such as the more deeper, bluer skies of tropical islands of the Pacific, or the more dull, harsh looking skies of the Baltic. Even light, pale skies of the desert, too. :)
