Title: an aces high upgrader's tale
Post by: Hap on December 29, 2003, 11:10:06 AM
i'm passing this along for those 'puter dweebs like me who don't know squat.  in some of the "i want a better system for aces high" type posts, i recognize myself.  maybe, the path i took (bad bad path.  DO NOT follow it) can save you from frustrating yourself and spending money needlessly.

i.t. guys you can stop reading because y'all got it wired tight.

several years ago, i was struck by the evil "frame-rate envy" bug.  everyone it seemed was 1/3 faster and twice as fast in some cases.  i was mooking around at 45 fps.  one of my squaddies, i was in dfa at the time, pulled 100 fps sitting in a tower.  100 FRAMES PER SECOND!  wow.  to me, that was 2 things at once: a) my system sucked.  b) i sucked because i bought it.  c) the 'puter gods reached down with the vicious "you need a better system" quest. (okay 3 things then.)

so i bought a new vid card.  no improvement.

i bought more memory.  no improvement.

i suffered and fumed.  i made the green hulk look like a midget.

so FINALLY, and to this day i don't recall why i e-mailed skuzzy, but i did.  should have been the 1st thing to do in retrospect.  he said my processor was the problem.

so, the money i had spent, the scheming i'd done, the hopes i had, were doomed from the start.

my 2 yr old gateway had a doggy pent 4 processor it turns out.  a real "bowser" that was indeed a pent4 but that they got on the cheap (i'm guessing).

so i bought a p4 2.66 ghz w/533 mhz bus speed.  bought an asus motherboard.  bought 2 sticks of 512mb generic fast ddr ram.  got it online with no problems.  total cost then, somewhere around $400.  (my 2 year old+ gateway had cost a bundle.  i'm too too embarrassed to say how much  :rofl )

i got the results i wanted.

so, if you are ignorant like me but also like me doomed to try to improve your frame rate.  toss your specs via e-mail 1st to hitech tech dept.  ask 'em "where do i begin" to improve things.  i think that was my actual question.  the "cpu" response wasn't what i wanted to hear.

the lasting results of this is that i gained enough dweeby experience to build 2 systems which work fine.  (that's a lie.  the danged little lights on the front of the case don't work.  dinky little pins.  dinky little wires.  dinky little schematics in motherboard manual.  and no patience for trial and error on my part.  yes.  laugh.)

maybe this story will help a few of you.  my guess is, i'm on the very low end of the aces high computer literacy gene pool.

and good luck

Actually the moral of the story is to never buy a boxed computer.  Dell, Gateway, Sony, Compaq are crap.  Build one yourself or get someone who knows how to build one for you.
