WASHINGTON (AP) - The FBI is warning police nationwide to be alert for people carrying almanacs, cautioning that the popular reference books covering everything from abbreviations to weather trends could be used for terrorist planning.
In a bulletin sent Christmas Eve to about 18,000 police organizations, the FBI said terrorists may use almanacs "to assist with target selection and pre-operational planning."
It urged officers to watch during searches, traffic stops and other investigations for anyone carrying almanacs, especially if the books are annotated in suspicious ways.
The FBI said information typically found in almanacs that could be useful for terrorists includes profiles of cities and states and information about waterways, bridges, dams, reservoirs, tunnels, buildings and landmarks. It said this information is often accompanied by photographs and maps.
:aok
When the Road Atlas is outlawed, only outlaws will own the Road Atlas.

NEWS FLASH!
Terrorists are believed to have read newspapers to keep track of current events and plan their attacks. Be alert for anyone reading or buying newspapers, they may be THE ENEMY!
-
obviously just "another"scare tactic used by the bush regime to scare the ignorant public with false pretense.
The horror......

You know, that kind of stuff comes over the teletype almost everyother day now. Its of some interest to law enforcement, particularly those who are right down where the rubber meets the road, but I wish it weren't published in newspapers and the media. It sounds stupid to half the general public and needlessly scary to the other half.
-
actualy an almanac is a GREAT tool for relaying coded mesages as long as both parties have similar almanacs. Think about it, if both of you had "calenders" that both had specific information and specific dates that would be nearly perfect for planing.
more than likely this report was generated because some suspected terrorits had almanacs with certain dates circle or somthing.

So some think it sounds silly and vague and pointless. Perhaps almost as silly and vague as saying on September 10, 2001 that you should watch out for people with GPS devices or boxcutters... In other words, you never know what is important or where this info came from and those of you who are ridiculing this should really consider that...

Absolutely ROFLMAO. I honestly thought this was a joke, a little dig at the "alerts" we are seeing. Unbelievable. WARNING: the latest intelligence reports indicate a strong possibility that terrorists are breathing air to stay alive, specifically oxygen. Recommend burning atmosphere to prevent further terrorist attacks.
Grunherz: yeah, you never know what's important. So let's outlaw everything.

And Eagler is in that all important third 50%.

Actually, the FBI is suggesting that police keep an eye out for almanacs when working with suspicious characters... not that the almanac makes them suspicious.
It's kinda funny really... nobody is being arrested for carrying almanacs nor for buying them. The FBI has made a simple correlation. I guarantee the koran is on the list of "books to keep an eye out for" too.
Dunno... maybe some of those being so critical could come up with a way to identify people before they commit a crime without infringing on our rights as U.S. citizens with 100% accuracy that should have been demonstrated by preventing 9/11.
Its not a matter of using hindsight OR foresight... its a matter of using both.

I think you can take the point. ;) So you can be suspected for carrying an almanac. What's amazing is that people can't see the humor in that. It's straight out of Dave Barry.
I was recently involved in an incident where a guy ran off with some merchandise and was later arrested...the police report said the "suspect behaved rudely, in almost a terroristic fashion." LOL.
