My Gigabyte MB has an AGP 4X slot. Will it only work with the "4X" cards, or will the "8X" cards work too?

It will work with a agp8x card.
But It will only render at 4x .

Your AGP8x transfer rate capable card will run at the AGP4x transfer rate.  Fortunately, AGP8x offers almost no performance (less than 1%) boost over AGP4x with most graphics cards.
