It was indeed!
The map was not any issue, but a real 'battlefield' :)

Here. FIRST PUBLIC VERSION as vruth. Now I'm just fork for those who like me, or @#)(*$! FORK for those who don't. :D
-
Ex-warbirder...quit that for a while before starting AH from first open beta.
Always been Extreme...

Hmmm...does alpha on original Confirmed Kill/Warbirds/AH count?
LW
-
To be honest don,t know when i started but it was beta at some point.
Before the B17s and when the p51 ruled the skies it was so porked it was silly :)
I was also signed up on confirmed kill.
-
Yep I was there. Can't remember how I heard about it.. prolly in an AW text buffer.
-
What version introduced the P-38?
Thats when I joined.
-
Day 1 open beta, or, as near as I can remember.........
The first open beta version was a bit more challenging then, than it is now. Torque effect was much more pronounced then. I enjoyed the game then as much as I do now, although I don't get near enough flight time now as I used to.
Thanks HiTech and crew for a most enjoyable game :aok

Flew first day of beta and was promptly shot down by MarkAT. :)
-
I was probably in the first or second beta month. I think I found a link in combatsim.com No fuel usage, no limit on wep. No guns on buffs. No wings tearing off. HOing everyone I could find, calling people cheaters when they could turn inside me when I was pulling as hard as I could.
Every second day was a new version to download.
-
:aok
-
day 1er: was a DWHB member - then moved to to FDBs :aok
oh, the days of 2 people in MA at 12 midnight PST. :D something we'll never see again. :)

THAT I remember well. Prime time was very fun. Chogs everywhere. Base capture was fun. Sneaky captures of 10+ bases by two people (two passes, ack down, troops in, poof) after midnight.
I always became depressed around 1-2am... everyone else had logged for the evening!
I was a buff dweeb. First squad, The Mad Bombers, lead by Sunchasr. Laser guided bombs from 30k to knock out HQ was always a blast.
-
It might have been alpha I don't remember. It was REALLY rough and primitive. Everything was tan except the bases..I remember that.
Too rough for me, I did a couple of weeks.
Was that beta, or alpha ?? I can't remember whether my "date" on this board came at the same time or a while after.
-
First day... checking in..
First hour of Confirmed Kill
First day Warbirds
-
I was in there somewhere, on and off.

Day 1 or 2. Seems like so long ago.
vector..............ayuh is yeah spelled like it sounds with a heavy Maine accent.

open beta dweeb.
hblair got me interested in it when we were stuck playing the old warbirds Air Combat Arena.
I played a couple times and imediately found the vertical flight modelling compared to warbirds in specific moves like hammerheads was not fluid or authentic. in fact i hated it (still do but i tolerate it) also the 3d cockpits and moveable head positions were incredible improvement over any other system of cockpit views in terms of realism. (and they still are the best)
it was free and better than the awful gameplay of the ACA and the buck an hour warbirds HA and MA was too pricey.
-
I was there in the first month I think..so long ago.
-
Day 1 or 2, Still trying to unnerstand that ACM thingy I have been hearing about for ages.
-
Open Beta
Edit: I'm not sure if this pic was taken in beta or soon after that. We were having only couple fields left at SE corner of the map but we were able to gather few decent pilots and pushed the enemy away from our corner :)
Dudedog, CavemanJ, Zigrat and me in heavy Corsairs heading to enemy base:

Miss it
-
Yup,
I knew Pyro and Hitech from WarBirds. Checked in the first day of the open Beta. AH was not what I needed it to be in those early days. I went back to WarBirds until a year ago. I took a look and went Whoa! This is kickin' WarBirds butt. :D
-
The pre 1.03 flight model was sweet :D
Open beta here... not first month tough...
-
Checkin in
Open beta day 1
was RAS then, til CPID RASCAL became available.
RASCAL ~S~
-
I started with v0.33 I think - not the very first version, but pretty early on in the open beta.
mauser
-
First day of open beta. I still prefer the pre 1.03 FM myself. The fights were all about energy, not yank & bank.
-
I started at some point in Beta 1. Been here since.
-
Is it around that time again?
Yep, I was here from one of the first days of open beta.
-
Started in beta 1 a few days after it launched - been here ever since.
-
open beta...but a bit late to chrash the party...think it was tour 2

Day 1. :)
Camo
-
Ahhyup.
Remember seeing maybe one dot on the radar.
Not currently flying, but I may come back for AH2.
-
Wuz here too, I still blame Heater for this!
-
The sim has improved greatly since beta. I sure as heck haven't
-
I can't remember which Beta version I first tried, 0.38? I only flew Beta offline since I wanted to try and actually get used to the game before going online. I think it helped since the only thing I was stuck on was how to work the radio! I've been online non-stop since Tour 1.
I do remember your name though Janneh, what squad were you in back then?
I used to have all the Beta versions saved but they're all lost now apart from this one:-
Download AH 0.49 - 5.6mb (http://www.btinternet.com/~nexx/AH/AH049.EXE)
-
Showed up about 10 days after the open beta started. Flew off & on till they added more planes, & the b17.
I've flown every tour since then except for the first month of pay for play.
I'd have to say 1.02 was my fav release of all time. Stayed up all night with a squadmate shooting down planes with Panzers. It rocked eh teeerex? :)

That was taken after the game went pay to play.
During beta I was 214CaveJ and I signed on I think the 2nd or 3rd day of open beta. Was a buff driver back then, flew the -17 pretty much most of the time... I remember when we finally got guns on it! Lord what a surprise I gave the fighter jocks then :lol
The F4U-1C was introduced the day the game went pay to play IIRC.
Sometimes I miss those days... The map was alot of fun... did alot of NOE B-26 runs to take the center bases in other areas and then launching immedately to pork the strat of that country and basically reduce them to flying only base defense :lol
-
Started out in tour 1 i think, was when the 109 was "impossible" to land and the sky was swarming with pee-51's. It was my first taste of online flightsims. Can't remember my first handle anymore (something with "duck..."), but used "shotdown" in one of the first post-beta tours. I prolly should have stuck with that ;)
-
Alpha tester checking in here. I still owe some guy named FireFox a shoot down for vulching me on the tarmac during my first take off. Only other alpha guys I remember were NB and Zork.
I'll be back......:aok
-
I was there with the big mountain.
-
Started a few months into beta ....
-
One more for the lot....that were Pepe days :D
Cheers,
-
I got killed 7 times in two weeks. Does that count?
-
wasn't a beta flyer, but i did stay in a holiday inn express last night.
-
when did we make the wrecking crew caveman?
this is -towd-
-
been here since Confirmed Kill days
-
Well damn, Rascal posted here, he is alive still after all:eek:
-
Yep. Still remember it as the most fun time in AH so far.
Those were the days my friends, we thought they'd never end.....
but they did.
and now we're sliding into a WW2OL type game.
Makes me kinda sad.
-
Beta Tour 1
I still remember telling Mathman that he needed to check out this new online flight sim I'd found. :)
-
Beta flyer here, and ever since. Not a month has gone by where I didn't have an account (main or shades) with HTC. Played AW on GEnie and AOL, went through several WB's versions, then found my home in AH.

October 1999, open beta 1.
Call name Swager.
-
Day 1 open beta. Was a knit back then because the rooks had the numbers and ruled the skies. Now I'm a rook. Ahh, the irony.
ts
-
Yeah Been here since 2nd or 3rd day beta I remember the B17 getting its guns enabled as Caveman mentioned lots of fun times seeing changes about every week or so :aok Jeeezzz im still a junior member...ive been busy 23 posts lol
-
Best part of beta and early AH was that map ogre produced was a real winner and should be brought back..
bases near mt ranges that made running away futile.. you had to fight your way back to base and vice versa..
I remember first kill, think it was moss (not too shure) pulling a immelman in a furball (i was g10 ) After that i knew this sim was a winner.. (compared to wild jill and brand W)
I remember when there was real hatred of the other countries and Bish Knit rivalry was rampant.. Torque and gang in the dreaded chogs(unperked back then) vs us JG27....... luftwaffermobiles..(post beta of course)
ah the simple life back then...
dedicated pilots unlike todays suicide carrier lancasters..

I checked score page to see if it was beta 1 tour or 2 - the pages don't seem to work. Flew as sourkrau back then. I have version 0.38 on a CD....
Started flying with Swager and Weazel - somehow they convinced me that I should learn to fly with the 190(A5?). lol - think it took a day or two to get off the runway.

I was there

Day 1 Open beta.

-
Musta been beta ... nothing but a strange F-4U with CANNON and a strange Russian fighter and eventually a strange Italian fighter ... nothing to shoot at, don't think the guns even worked ....
-
I was here day one as Packrat, still Packrat
-
http://www.hitechcreations.com/cgi-bin/105score/105stats.pl
The kill stats in expanded format worked for me for the Beta tours. Fun looking back; it was the best of times.
-
Thanks Toad! Didn't realize I had 4 kills & 8 deaths in Beta Tour 1.
Ahhhh, the memories.
I loved flying against the kitchen utensil squad (or whatever their name was)
-
Been here on and off since Beta 1.
My strongest memory is how on that tiny little beta map, it used to be essentially a war between Bish and Rooks. Knitland was almost completely empty; squads would sometimes go knit for a short time when they decided they wanted to take on the whole world.
-
Day 1 Open Beta.
-
EEEEEK, such a dweeb I was back then.
-
Beta Tour One but I went AWOL when IL2 got released.
I may hold the record for most deaths in a B17 or C47 in AH history, I got shot....and shot....and shot by everyone in the arena at one time or another.
Looking forward to AHII if there is any room for B17s or Gooney Birds.
Hey CavemanJ, how ya been?
