Title: Show Some Skin!
Post by: Bullethead on January 06, 2004, 09:24:51 PM
We seem to have a lot of guys wanting to try their hand at skinning planes these days, so how about all you skinners out there post up some of your favorite creations.  You know, showcase your work and inspire the new guys who'll hopefully soon get the chance to strut their stuff in AH2.

I'll go first:
This was my 1st real skin.  Nothing fancy, just a silver B26, although I'm kinda proud of being able to do the nose art acceptably well.  Note the "annoyance" here of having only 1 texture for both sides of the nacelle, so I couldn't do an anti-glare panel on the inner side :(

I got this from More Luftwaffe Fighter Aircraft in Profile by Claes Sundin and Christer Bergstrom.  This Dora was supposedly flown by Stuka ace Rudel at the end of the war.

This is my interpretation of a photo in Malta:  The Spitfire Year 1941 by Christopher Shores, Brian Cull, and Nicola Maliza.  This is a spit5c delivered to Malta in April '42, flown off USS Wasp.  This batch of spits was painted some color of blue while aboard the CV, so I chose 1942 USN blue as being the most likely available.  At the time of this pic, the spit had seen some hard use so the blue was chipping off, exposing the underlying Brit camo.  This was just an experiment, actually, simply putting blue over the stock skin and adding some weathering.  I'm currently working on the definitive version :)

I made this as a birthday present for one of my squaddies.  He's a mailman with a bad attitude, the Hurri IIC is his favorite ride, and vulching is his favorite passtime :).  Note the UPS symbol kill markings :).  This is just to show that you don't have to be historical when you do skins.

Beautiful skins there Bullet.  I especially like the Spit, very well done with the weathering.  I'm currently looking for a skin to do, but can't get any inspiration.  Thinking of doing a German captured spitfire.  Good job :aok

(Love the UPS kill signs!!!!!)

B26SIDE.bmp
B26WINGS.bmp
LOGO.bmp
LOGO_a.bmp

The latter 2 are the nose art and the nose art alpha map.  If your nose art doesn't show, it's probably because you didn't do the LOGO_a.bmp right.

And thanks for the compliments.  I'm pimping for a job in the scenario skin department ;).

The rest of you, let's see some more skins.

B17skull reduce saturation of color of P-38 it is too pure green - I think you have used 0/255/0 RGB - reduce saturaion.

Skull,

Do you think you could send me the Ju88/Betty skin to use for a map?

Thanks.

BTW, some plane textures seem to be missing from the list. I can't seem to find the 262, B26, B17, and others.

You need to delete a file called shpfilter.txt

Find the file "shpfilter.txt" in the default C:Program Files/HTC/aheditor/terrains.  Open it and delete any plane name that you want to skin.  Open the TE and it should then be available.

My latest creation...  This is Spit Vc BR112/X of 185 Squadron on Malta.  It arrived via USS Wasp in April 1942 with the standard Brit desert camo covered over on top with USN 1942 blue.  After 5 months of very hard service, it was shot down by ack and bellied in on a Sicilian beach, where numerous photos were taken of it.  Thus, I have a pretty good idea of the extent to which the blue paint had worn off and how much paint chipping and staining there was at that time.  It's shown here like it's en route on its last sortie.

I did this one with textures twice the usual AH1 size, as practice for the high-res AH2 textures.  Who knows?  Maybe some of this will be salvageable for AH2 ;).

Ive also got a question.

I'm currently working on a P-40 for a scenario in H2H im going to set up.  I finished the skin and was going to save it as 256 colors.  I did so and all of my colors were completely wrong.  I cant find a color to substitute it for either.

How did you get your colors to come out?

Also the Nakajima Ki-201 Karyu. That was the plane that was an outright copy of the Me-262, so reskinning it is all you need.

Post by: Dux on January 18, 2004, 07:54:52 PM
Shiva is correct... thx :)

United... when you start editing a skin from one that is exported from the TE, you need to save it UP to a 24-bit format... aka RGB. That way you have the full gamut of colors to work with.

When done editing, save a COPY of your work out at 8-bit mode (aka indexed or 256-color). Always keep a 24-bit master.

Thank ya Dux.  I made that mistake when I saved my finished 24bit P-40 to a 256, turned out crap and I lost my colors.

I dont think that answered my question, or it did and im too stupid to see it.

Thanks!

As for ideas, I just have a bunch of books on WW2 airplanes that I read and reread constantly.  Periodically, I see a photo or color profile that strikes my fancy so I make a skin of it.

It's also a good idea to have a bunch of books with accurate line drawings of the AH planes.  This lets you put the panel lines in the right place because sometimes the stock skins have them way wrong.

And btw, what editing program do you use?

I use Paint Shop Pro 7.  I got it to specifically to make skins with and had never done any graphics before.  So I just started doing skins, starting simple like that B26 up above to get the hang of it.  I just finished that Malta spit today and was learning new tricks by doing it right up to the end.  So just get after it and you'll be doing great stuff in no time.

When you 1st export the skin, it's in 256.  Your very 1st step in editing should be to increase the color depth as high as it will go.  In Paint Shop Pro, you need to do this anyway so you can use layers.  Then do all your editing and save the file.  Then save it under another name, like by putting an extra character in front.  Then with that new copy open, merge all the layers, then reduce the colors back to 256, then save it as a .bmp without the extra character in front.

The reason for making the copy with that extra character is in case you accidentally hit SAVE instead of SAVE AS after you've collapsed the layers and reduced the colors :D  Ask me how I know this is a good safety tip... :(

United, I think I know what's happening to your colors... when you save it down to 8-bit from 24-bit, make sure you're using an adaptive palette (should be worded something like that). I bet you're using a web-safe or system palette, which is a very limited and specific palette. It will convert a color into it's nearest match, and sometimes it's not even close. An adaptive palette will use the actual colors already in your file, for the closest color match.

Also, if you have an option for diffusion dithering, I recommend using it.

Thanks guys, they're fun to do. Actually, all the skins I do end up either in the CT or in Special Events, so check them out when you can.

Corsair, I'll send you the Betty skins, but not the rest just yet. Don't want to steal anyone else's thunder. :)

Thanks!

Nobody's getting p'd off, don't worry. :)

You may just be hitting a wall with MSPaint. Paint's really not meant for serious graphics work... you may want to find a cheap (or free) copy of something better.

I do have the free Serif 5.5 photoshop, but I cant get it to save anything as a bitmap.  Its all .srf, serif use only.

Another great reference source I like to use are modelling review articles online... they usually have great pictures, and the modellers who are good enough to post reviews usually are very thorough in their research and are historically accurate.

Do a Google search on something like "hellcat 1/48 review" or "stuka 1/72 review" and see how many great sites it returns, all with pictures.

Yeah, this is a great source.  I found a cool Dora model with not only good pics but 3-view drawings and even color profiles.  The cool thing about this one is that it's a product of the dispersed assembly with zero time for fine-tuning, so the it's got all kinds of paint mismatches, plus bare metal here and there, and the upper wings are only 1/2 camo'd, the rest being primer ;).  Looks like a complete abortion but it definitely has character.

only the bottom half of the nose art showed up some odd reason... but it was a girl in a devil costume saying "join me below" (kinda like saying see you in hell cause your about to get shot down) to go along with the satan on the nose.

I replaced the files with that alphabet thing and the nose stayed black and yellow... only other thing with black and yellow on the plane is the prop, i might try changing its color and seeing if it effects the nose.

Raptor, save yourself some searching... there is no file that textures that panel. It's colored at the polygon level. You can't change it.

There's a really good book with LOTS of pictures, I don't know if any of you have it, but it'd be helpful it's called 'The Great Book of World War II Airplanes'  it's about a 3 " thick  1 ft wide, and about 1 1/2 ft tall, it's hard to miss* and it's illustrated by Rikyu WATANBE, it's silver and has the diffrent historic artwork in it. Very nice book( gonna try and buy it, about 30 USD) and raptor, could you send me the green 38 skin, elephart@yahoo.com

Heres my latest project, still in the early hours of work.  It has several problems, the largest being the wings arent the same color as the fuselage grey .  The nose needs to be changed and I also havent added weathering or anything like that.
