Rip, I've seen a video of this same test, very impressive... it's somewhere out there on the net, I'll see if I can find a link.

Ahem... has the U.S. fired a torpedo in combat since WWII?

Cheap indeed, but mainly much more powerful than even a Mk48 because all the front part of the torp is filled with explosive while in a guided torpedo the sonar and guidance systems use up some room and payload.

I think Tom Clancy discusses this aspect in his book 'Submarine'.

Cool pics and video. In the video there appeared to be two explosions. Why is that?

The first explosion is the high explosive shock wave that would travel at at tremendous speed vertically up and out. It travels at close to the speed of sound.

The next explosion is the bubble of water that was formed by the explosion expanding out and then collasping in on itself. It travels at a much slower speed.

From the initial article:

Quote
The torpedo warhead contains explosive power equivalent to approximately 1200 pounds of TNT. This explosive power is maximized when the warhead detonates below the keel of the target ship, as opposed to striking it directly. When the detonation occurs below the keel, the resulting pressure wave of the explosion "lifts" the ship and can break its keel in the process. As the ship "settles" it is then seemingly hit by a second detonation as the explosion itself rips through the area of the blast. This combined effect often breaks smaller targets in half and can severely disable larger vessels.

The first 'explosion' is actually the pressure wave transmitted through the water from the 1 explosion.  What looks like the second part is actually the rest of the first (and only explosion) to reach the surface.

Yea, MK48 torpedos are something else, even when you have to sleep next to one.

I read that they can be steered manually while hooked up via cable.  I got to see and touch one when I visited the USS Honolulu (688), that was pretty dang cool.

Well, any non-moving, unmanned, and obsolete destroyer is screwed for sure!

Cool, Chairboy... I've been on the Dallas, Providence, and Hartford as a visitor. Great memories. :)
