better pic, cheap, nasty, but will survive a pmn-2 blast

As I left for the office this morning CNN was reporting it as an "emergency landing" with eight dead.
Was unclear whether it was a result of hostile fire or mechanical problems.

Out of curiousity, how would an APC have limited casualties suffered in a helicopter crash? I give credit to the South African weapons industry, but I didn't know they could make a Buffel fly :D

Interesting design, but unfortunately it is too ugly for Americans to be seen riding around in.

And lightly armoured, open top APCs are too easy to take out with RPGs and small arms fire.

I bow to your obvious superior knowledge gained from years of military experience garnered on the field of battle....

Well thank you. Almost three years to be exact.
If you want to drive around in a Buffel in bulit up areas or out in the countryside where there is plenty of cover and everyone and their cousin has easy access to a variety of weaponary, be my guest.

Gosh a whole three years?

I assume that any view I have of MY PREFERENCE in terms of military equipment won't be good enough for you, so I'm not going to start a pissing match with you as to whether I am worthy enough to express an opinion on military tactics based on my "whole three years" of military experience.
Had you informed me that you are obviously a very senior current or former member of the military with decades of experience, presumably including years of combat experience fighting insurgents and MOUT, I would have never bothered contributing to this thread.

well _Schadenfreude_ at least you didnt end your post with a smiley.
I sense there are many here on this BBS that do smile when they hear such things happening to americans, and some americans smile too. Anything to discredit that Devil Bush and his minions.

Here is a lovely slant on this event.

Sorry Pongo, but is missed the "slant" in the story. What slant were you referring to?

Now that is one of the all time good bad (really BAD) movies.

If you dont see it explaining it will just anger you.

I read it very quickly and asked a simple question as to what the slant you saw was since I was legitimately interested.
Thank you for divining what you think my reaction would be. A simple "This is the slant I read in the article" would have been sufficient.

Yup. Jan Michael Vincent. George Peppard. The vehicle swimming through that flood at the end.
If I remember the movie right, two of those things left the military base but they got caught in a sandstorm. One got blow over and wrecked, the other one "dug in" with those wheels.
Classic stuff!!!!!!!!

But that would not have convayed the message I wanted.
How about I write my posts and you write yours?

OK. As I said, I was genuinely interested in your point of view since, again, I didn't see the slant that you were referring to.
Silly me for actually wanting to get a sense of what other people think about something.

Dude I built sooooo many Landmaster variants with Legos.

I tried, but I could never recapture the spirit of the beast. Primary Red, Primary Yellow, and Primary Blue just don't have the same visual impact as Metallic Brown, Rust, and Desert Light Tan.
That thing is still around and was recently restored to driveable condition for an episode of a Chris Elliot show - as an automatic newspaper delivery vehicle!

Schadenfreude, don't be an ass.
1. I don't feel I am being an ass.
2. If I do feel like being an ass, that's my perogative.
3. If American troops haven't worked out that someone is using Faluja as a chopper trap - 5 down in 5 months with numerous casualties then someone is being pig headed or just plain stupid.
Better to drive and expect to be attacked and when you are deal with the attackers on the ground
4. Most casualties come from blast from improvised explosive devices or mines - both which are command detonated.
5. My point being that there are numerous models of vehicles available which provide protection from mines/blast - if ambushed you debus and take the fight to the enemy - well that's what I was taught anyway. But you have to survive the initial contact ie the command detonation.
6. Want to die or lose arms and legs or worse - drive around in an unarmoured hummer or better still a supply truck.
Your troops are expected to do a job by people who are not giving them the equipment they need ( gosh who in the military has ever heard of such a thing!) It pisses me off - it should piss Americans off even more.
If I was somewhat sarcastic with the 3 year wonder boy it's because after three years - 1 year training, 1 training troops and 1 year on ops I only just barely knew what the hell I was talking about - I served another 5 years and after that 4 in what you would call the reserves.
If I want the military opinion of someone I won't go to someone who's never seen the elephant, never fired a rpg, doesn't know jack about coin and seemingly gathers their information from hollywood.
The subject is closed gentlemen.

Geez...can't you read...."The subject is closed gentlemen".
Regards from this "3 year wonder boy who has gleaned all of his life experiences from Hollywood and who has been advised by Schadenfreude precisely what this 3 year wonder boy's military experiences did and did not include".
