Title: Skin editing question
Post by: United on January 11, 2004, 04:46:05 PM
I have noticed that while using MS paint, I go to use a certain color, I.E. Yellow, and when I go to use it it is a different color.  I know that since it is in 256 color mode this cant be fixed, or at least not to my knowledge.  How can I change it so that it does come out the color I choose, and if not, how can I get it to 16 color bit mode, and back to 256 without losing any detail or colors?

Have you tried Serif PhotoPlus 5.5 yet? It's the best free image editor I've found:

http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=serif+photoplus+5.5&tg=dl-2001

Makes things easier than MS Paint.

Nope, but I'll give it a shot.  My editor is for Pictures only, so I'm willing to work with anything.

I tried the seriff, but I can't get the pictures saved as .bmp so it will work in AH.  How can I fix that?

Change the image to RGB mode before working on it... your palette will be unlimited then.

When done, save it back down to 8-bit (256 color) mode. If you have the options of "adaptive palette" and "diffusion dithering", I'd recommend using them.

ps. Don't forget to vertically flip the default texture first.

I dont have any choices to change to RGB color mode in MS paint.  Or at least none that I can find...

You can save as a .bmp or .jpg by clicking File>Export.

In the box that comes up, click 'Optimizer' and you can change the bit depth, dithering etc..

But you probably got all that figured out by now :)

When I go to convert the file "LA72.bmp" to a 16bit color mode, It screws up and all the details, coloring, and things change completely!!!

I got it to work fine on LA7.bmp.

MS Paint will always mess up colors when converting, photoshop or psp do a much nicer job.

Did you build it into a terrain? The skins in AH ONLY work if you build it into a terrain, and then ONLY in that one terrain.

After you build the terrain, you must place that terrain.res file into your AH terrains folder, and then you must load that terrain through the Setup button in the clipboard.

As long as people keep asking, I'll keep saying: It's all in the HELP file.  :)

Good luck.

No prob :)  it's usually something simple.

Show us a pic of the LA-7 if you can.

[edit: Never mind, I saw the pic in Bullethead's thread. Nice work... you're off to a good start.]
