Title: Superpower-Anbody playing it?
Post by: Nefarious on January 13, 2004, 10:54:30 PM
I bought it some time ago...It was a Walmart special, under $10.

Havnt played in a month or two, but has anybody become the "Superpower"?

I started as Lebanon, After nearly 20 years I finally had the resources to conquer Jordan and now i'm pretty much stuck. You see, I'm trying make the middle east, mine. And then start expanding from there. I have nuclear missiles that can reach as far as England. But I can only lob 5 (Their expensive).

Its a really fun game, and golem labs is working on Superpower II which will enable Multiplayer. Anybody else playing?

I read a few reviews when it first launched.  It looked very promising, but the reviewer was kind of turned off at some randomness of certain aspects.  Stuff like countries sporadically declaring war for random reasons and other strange things.

What are your overall impressions?

It's fun, Each turn is One Week. You start in 1980 or 90, I'm not really sure right off hand. You decide how to spend your money investing in Technology, Military, Science. Then you build cities and Miltary bases. It's not like civiliaztion or anything, it's just maps and charts.

You can conduct covert ops, assasinations, and rig elections in other countries. And when all else fails, War.

Fighting countries is pretty basic, no fancy animations or anything. Just icons on a map, which I have to admit is pretty boring.

I spent most of my Military budget on Submarines, which I plan on using on Cyprus next time I play (But Egypt controls the Eastern Med). i also spent a lot of money on Aircraft, but it's more expensive to build an airforce than to build an undersea fleet of 5 or 6 boomers ;) go figure.

The best part I like about the game is the Weekly newspaper, It keeps you up to date with ALL the news. And you can make your strategic assumpstions fairly well using it.

As for countries sporadiccaly starting war, I beleive I'm in in year 2014 something, and no War has started yet. Although I launch strategic attacks all the time just to see what the effects would be. It basically starts WW3 anytime a Nuke is fired...So use them only if you have too.

I've read of d/l's on the internet where you can have games that depict the Cold War, or just plain WW3. Where countries are battling Week 2.

In my oppinion its a good game, you just have to be into it.
