Oh man, thats so unbelievable great. This little cute machine driving over the surface of mars collecting information, all alone, no one is there only ... ... he ... ... millions of miles away from his ... ... friends...
But honestly, its super cool! I really would like to be in Pasadena in the NASA control center.

seriously, I find it as exciting as watching grass grow ...
for bush to jump on this bandwagon of nerd excitement with his "to the moon and beyond" spew, makes him look bad imo
first the illegal mexicans, now the nasa geeks - waiting for him to declare another AA holiday for someone/thing to try and garner additional black votes .... politics makes me sick sometimes.

Lets hope its not using Firestone's :)

Dont mention it, 4 months to summer, cant wait to start observing my back yard grass!
Last time i got it 50cm tall before my neighbour came and mowed it. :lol

Booosh is invading mars!!!! :)

The difference between mars and illegal mexicans is not so big as i thought - yawn

Oh geesh guys, a great scientific acheivement to learn about another planet and you guys are well on the way to make it yet another off-topic political rant. Would it really kill you guys to be impressed with all the work it took to get that lil guy up there? We're talking a place that's a dot when you stare up at the stars at night.
I'm pretty impressed with what Spirit has pulled off and the technologies used. Its -90F up there and this battery/solar powered rover is beaming back some great images and is preparing to do some great science in the Gustev Crater.

yes, it is amazing but for what? so a bunch of geeks can play with their long distance R/C dunebuggy? so the 24hr news channels have content?
Too much money for such little return ..
space is great but I think we need answers here on planet earth before we go asking more questions out there...
getting ppl food and water here is more important than to find out if there is/was water on mars

We need answers here on planet earth? yea right... the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer...
WTG! Nasa.

I knew it, Eagler is a closet liberal! :aok

I think unmanned probes like this are the way to go. Orders of magnitude less expensive than sending people.

I second that motion. go away :)
Aside from the mass media news, are there any websites out there dedicated to this mission? Any NASA journals? I'd like to be informed of specifically what the rover is doing... what its testing, where it's going and stuff - and possibly what it finds, even if it's minor. Best way is to call someone from the control room - lol :)

<~~very well put lepaul,, ya seems like any time anyone mentions space rovers,,,they start talking about starving people,,,,world is a bad place,,and i dout stopping the missions to mars would help starving people,,the money would just go into spying on are own people,,or into the pockets of wealthy people who dont need it in the first place
its cool to see the surface of a planet you may never set foot on,,i heard the plan to fly a remote controlled air plane threw the 300 mile deep canons<~~now that would be a site too see for sure:)

that was actually supposed to take place on the the Centennial of Flight - it was cancelled of course

That would be pretty incredible to build an aircraft for a planet with a totally different atmosphere and gravity, and have the thing fly well on the first try. Awesome.

I know the answer to getting those people food and water.
Problem is, the only worthwhile answer - no one who desires luxuries (virtually every American and European) will like the answer.
Everyone with the same quality of life - shelter, food and water.
Star Trek has answers to everything in life.
Besides, we need space exploration so I can get the hell away from all of you dirty scumbags.

Here's a thought.
If we are able to send a romote control car to mars, then maybe the UFO's are some other lifeform flying their remote control airplanes into your planet?
I think I gotta get some more of what I'm drinking *burp*

aww really? that sure would of been a cool too see how a plane would handle in the mars air:)

Hey, Funked, the fact is that they, a) fired a mechanical rocket and put the vehicle in orbit(Flew pretty well there, eh?) around a distant planet, b) dropped an aircraft into the atmosphere of that planet and landed it(pretty good flying there, too, eh), and c) didn't "break the egg", that is to say, the rover is, well, roving.

I get it, NASA causes people to be poor.

who's we? Americians sent the probes that actually worked on Mars.....starting in 1976......America is a great land indeed.
-
And the rockets used to get Spirit there never "flew."
Mars' atmosphere is so thin, actually flying with a wing structure would prove mighty difficult. But, I'm pretty sure the conditions could be duplicated for testing on earth. It would be interesting to try it.

It would take helluva big wings to create enough lift. Martian atmosphere is 0,02bar methinks.

No, that would be capitalism.
-
It might be possible though. Unfurling the wings without damage would be difficult. How about using some kind of airship/blimp arrangement?

You're right, what I said was uncalled for.
Cherlie I applolgize to you, what I said was very childish and moronic.

"...space is great but I think we need answers here on planet earth before we go asking more questions out there... ".
You mean like how life began on earth?
Nah-h-h. Probably a little too deep for 'ya.

no more like hows life going .. who really gives a crap how it began...
-
Yeah we should stop looking for answers and exploring, cuz theres much better things to do. Like eat, fu** and crap in the porcelain. We should start looking ways to combine those 3 basic elements to make life even easier.
