Not sure what you have or haven't done, Sirloin... but the first thing you need to do when working in the TE is to save the terrain first. BEFORE you start placing objects, BEFORE you start doing anything else. OPEN the TE, create new, apply the settings, save, and quit out. Open it back up, and continue working on it, and it should not crash.
Also, if and when you get to the point where you're importing bitmaps, make sure they are 8-bit (256 color)
Stick with it... once you learn the little quirks, terrain editing is really easy and fun... but there is a learning curve. Good luck. :)
[EDIT]
Oh... Just FYI: The TE help file and this forum are your friends. EVERYTHING has been answered many times over. If you're serious about using the TE... even if it's only for a single terrain... make sure you spend a little time looking around this forum. You don't have to memorize every answer; just become familiar with the questions that have already been asked. I guarantee that you will not find a new and unique problem.
