"Distinguished African-American Student Award" can't go to a white guy? He sounds African-American - he's from Africa, and he's now American. Oh wait, they mean Distinguished Black Student Award. Sucks when your politically correct BS comes back and bites ya in the arse, eh?

OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) -- Officials disciplined students who papered their nearly all-white high school with posters advocating a white student from South Africa for the school's "Distinguished African American Student Award."
Peggy Rupprecht, spokeswoman for the Westside Community Schools district, said administrators at Westside High School discovered more than a hundred of the posters throughout the school first thing Monday -- Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
"The content of the posters, they believed, was inappropriate and insensitive to some members of our school community," Rupprecht said.
Citing privacy policies, Rupprecht said she could not specify what the penalties were or how many students were disciplined. But the mother of the boy pictured on the posters said he was suspended for two days.
The award has been given the last eight years to an outstanding black student as part of the school's Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration, she said.
The poster pictured junior Trevor Richards, 16, smiling and making a thumbs up sign. A message at the top encouraged votes for him for next year's award.
Karen Richards said her son and his friends were not trying to hurt anyone.
"My son is not a racist," she told the Omaha World-Herald. "He has black friends, friends from Bangladesh and Egypt. Color has never been an issue in our home."
"It was a very innocent thing," she said.
Two of her son's friends were disciplined along with him, she said. A fourth student was punished for circulating a petition Tuesday criticizing the practice of recognizing only black student achievement with the award, she said.
Tylena Martin, a junior, said the poster had been on the door to her homeroom class where she is the only black student. She said she felt hurt by the posters and the backlash that ensued.
According to 2002-2003 state statistics, 56 Of Westside's 1,632 students are black.

If you've murdered someone, you should go to your priest and repent and then go to the local law-enforcement agency and face the consequences of your actions.
You should also try to persuade all your accomplices (to whom you refer as "we" to do the same).
I do hope that you are just being temporarily delusional about having murdered anyone and you get better soon and realise you have not.
If you want to help any person in need, you certainly should do so.
I am not sure what you mean by helping a "group". Last time the government have helped a "group" it was descendants of black slaves (and and white slavers). They were placed on welfare and their society, culture and family structure were destroyed.
If you want to help only the American Indians, you will have to be carefull. Plenty of people that claim to be "american indians" or "african americans" are of mixed blood - with significant admixture of white blood or even majority of it.
Not only do those people owe their existance to some white race ancestor as much as any black one, they may be considered to be spawn of rapists and slavers as well as descendants of oppressed slaves.
Helping a needy person is always a good idea, if done right, but helping someone just because his ancestors were opressors and rapists or even opressed slaves does not sound like a very rational act.

I grew up in omaha and westside allways had a proportionate amount of people with color. I know somone who teaches there now I'll drop her an email.
I think this is awsome! I allways wondered if somone from africa who isnt black could check african american on a college or fed gov application.

But see, they can't do that. People don't understand that African-American doesn't mean African, it means black. It's a term Americans have made mainstream to avoid hurting anyones feelings.
When they thought this up, I guess they never thought about people from Egypt, or South Africa, who ARE NOT BLACK! No no...that would be intelligent and that's something PC is not.

I read somewhere that there's a movement afoot to try and get freshmen to do just that. A excellent counter to race based preferences. If I had it to do over again I'd check 'American Indian'. I always wanted to be an Indian, so who the Hell are they to say I'm NOT.
Let them prove I'm not and the bastards better not hurt my feelings in the process.

BTW, I have it on a very reliable source that the preferred socially acceptable term is now Black and not African-American. My friend says he is 100% American not just 1/2. The school made a typical kneejerk reaction I'm sure, making a mountain out of a molehill.

MT... maybe I am not mainstream white but.... everytime I see a special anything for black people.... I dislike the race more. When they try to justify it then my dislike is solidified.

Not to hijack this thread, but i despise that phrase so much.

Good for him. I play a nerdy on-line flight sim with a guy from Puerto Rico whose skin is brown. I have even had a few brief text conversations with him. That doesnt make me any less of a "racist."

Something along these lines, perhaps not exactly the same, may well be true for a whole generation of young people today or in the very near future. Dont asume that young people today have the same experiences as you did in the 1960s..

Al Sharpton attacked Dean for not having any Black high level advisors in his adminstrations as Governor, and of ciurse Dean did not. Now Vermont has something like 0.5% Black poulation, yet some feel this was a significant blow to Dean in Iowa last week. So whites saying "I have black friends" does seem to be important - on many levels.

If I'm white but have no black friends does that make me a racist? I have mexican friends but I have never had a single black person over to my house....again does that make me a racist or any less/more of a racist than somone who says they have "black friends"

I very rarely even see black people... I try not to live in places that they live. I try not to go to places where there are a lot of black people. I can't imagine why a black person would want to live in a place that is 99% white if white people are so racist and muirderous.
I take people on an indivdual basis but know that I don't want to be around a large group of blacks or live in a mostly black place.
