Title: Remember the veterans.
Post by: Animal on November 05, 2000, 03:43:00 AM
Kind of early, but I'd like to mention that soon it will be Veteran's Day. Please take the day to reflect on the people who gave their lives so you can come here and whine about the Niki and the goddarned ostwind.

Please also remember those veterans who are still alive. If you know any old vet who has no family to spend the day with, please take the day to visit and show your gratitude.

There is a beautiful song by Pink Floyd, a short narrative about a boy talking about his father, who died in WWII. This sad song is called WHEN THE TIGERS BROKE FREE. I suggest you all download it from Napster and listen to it (it isnt on any PF album so its not piracy).

To all veterans, no matter what nationality:

Thank You.

p.s: here are the lyrics to the song. The hairs on my back always rise when I read them, and sometimes my eyes can wet.

When The Tigers Broke Free

It was just before dawn
One miserable morning in black 'Forty-four
When the forward commander
Was told to sit tight
When he asked that his men be withdrawn
And the Generals gave thanks
As the other ranks held back
The enemy tanks for a while
And the Anzio bridgehead
Was held for the price
Of a few hundred ordinary lives

Part 2

And old King George
Sent Mother a note
When he heard that father was gone
It was, I recall
In the form of a scroll
With gold leaf and all
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away
And my eyes still grow damp
To remember
His Majesty signed
With his own rubber stamp

It was dark all around
There was frost on the ground
When the tigers broke free
And no one survived
From the Royal Fusiliers Company C
They were all left behind
Most of them dead
The rest of them dying
And that's how the High Command
Took my daddy from me

-Roger Waters

I just found out another post about Veteran's Day was made before this one, sorry. But doesnt matter, all the posts in the world are not enough gratitude.

Also I just realized "When The Tigers Broke Free" refers to the Tiger tank as they managed to break thru the British lines and kill all soldiers.

Very sad song. Very beautiful too. Please download it.

Very thoughtful of you Animal....

As for me, I'll be visiting the local VA hospital. There are lots of WW2 vets living out the end in these hospitals and a visit from anyone that is appreciative of their past service will make you both feel good.

If only more would realize that what we do today is the end result of many that sacrificed there lives for yester-year, from the girl who bucked rivets in B17's to the soldiers that fell from a snipers bullet..

<S> to those who defended, and <S> to those that continue to defend today, whatever country you might live in.

this is often done at retirements but it is a good way to remember Vets.

   For twenty years
This sailor has stood the watch
While some of us were in our bunks at night
This sailor stood the watch
While some of us were in school learning our trade
This shipmate stood the watch
Yes, even before some of us were born in this world
This shipmate stood the watch
In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen
brewing on the horizon of history
This shipmate stood the watch
Many times he would cast an eye ashore and see
his family standing there
Needing his guidance and help
Needing that hand to hold during those hard times
But he still stood the watch
He stood the watch for twenty years
He stood the watch so that we, our families and
Our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in
safety, each and every night
Knowing that a sailor stood the watch
Today we are here to say
"Shipmate...the watch stands relieved,
Relieved by those You have Trained, Guided and Lead.
Shipmate - you stand relieved...we have the watch"
"Boatswain - Standby to pipe the side
Shipmate Going Ashore"
