Title: Worst Car ever.

Actually 10 international and 10 domestic (from an article last year) over at Forbes. Click on the Slideshow grapic at each link to see them.

International: http://www.forbes.com/lifestyle/2004/01/26/cx_dl_0126feat.html

Domestic: http://www.forbes.com/2002/10/21/1021feat.html

I have experience with the Chevette and Citation witch I drove at several jobs i worked at in the early to mid 1980s. They deserve their listings.

I had a 1979 Accord Hatchback that was better than the 1978 model listed --  Honda must have really improved the model in that year -- though it was starting to rust by 1984 or so.  I can remember my father having a fairly new  "Datsun" that was turning brown after only a few Chicago winters in the mid 1970s.

A buddy did have a ford Bronco II that he did manage to roll, though alcohol, high speeds and slick roads probably had something to do with that.

Anyone alive in the early to mid 1970s would also remember the Pacer and Gremlin. I even went on a 4th grade tour of an AMC plant at the time...

first date i went on (non chaperoned) was in a rust colored citation LOL (rust paint not rusted .... well sort of LOL).

her name was Shannon McCormick. my buddy and his GF were there (his GF car) classic double-date.

Shannon is still my dream girl. isn't that sad.

she is the standard i hold all women to this day. beautiful, funny, feminine, honest, pure, beautiful (oops mentioned that lol), the most perfect female i have ever met.

dman im pathetic.

Best car I ever owned was my '86 Chevy Celebrity...never shoulda scrapped that (should had the electrical problem found and fixed). Since that Celebrity I've wrecked a Hyundai (pretty good protection for a Korean car), blown up a Pontiac's engine (replaced it) and had nothing but problems with a Plymouth (I will never buy anything, ANYTHING made by Chrysler again).

Where was the 1980 Audi Fox?  Mine was undriveable by 65,000 miles.

I had a AMC Gremlin X, the sport model.  :rofl   orange with black vinyl striping.   I bought it used from a bank repo, drove it for a few months in college, sold it for a profit after replacing the universal joint in the drive shaft and re-sealing the motor that was spraying oil all over the inside of the engine bay.  In addition to the mechanical woes, that car drove like a jeep (and I mean that in a bad way).  No wonder it made it on the list.

I also got a 1979 Honda Accord hatchback (not the 1978 model listed in the slideshow).  Mine was metallic brown with tan interior, 4-speed manual, and cloth sunroof.  Man, that was a fun car; a poor man's CRX.  A bit short on the horsepower and a far cry from the 1975 Pontiac Firebird I drove just before getting it, but it was cheaper to own, cheaper to operate, and easier to park on crowded college campuses.  Quality was excellent, so I guess the 1978 model must've been a real eye-opener for Honda.  I thought the design was good so I guess the quality problems must've been in the workmanship.

Pontiac Fiero.  Ah, got a great story about that one.  My buddy had one and was living with his dad and his brother in a townhouse.  The homeowner's association said owners couldn't park in the road and they had 3 cars but space for only 2.  My buddy was behind in his payments and couldn't afford to sell his Fiero and take a loss; plus the car was falling apart.  He was also learning to play the drums, much to the annoyance of the neighbor, who was on the homeowners association board.  Soon a feud erupted between my buddy and the neighbor - "Crazy old man!" and "Rotten kids!" type stuff.

The homeowner's association had leased some extra parking space from a nearby church where folks at the complex could park when the church wasn't having services.  So, he came home late one night and had to park in the church lot.  He woke up later to the sounds of a fire engine siren screaming and flashing lights.  He got out of bed to see what was going on and got there just in time to see the firemen foaming down the smoldering remains of his Fiero.

Parked right next to it was the neighbor's Saab, with the paint scorched all down one side of the car.

My buddy had gotten his revenge on the neighbor unintentionally; and insurance paid off the Fiero and the repairs to the Saab.  It all came together beautifully.

By far the worst pile of **** car I ever owned, was a 1978 hilux longbed toyota pickup.

It had less the 70k on it, it ran like ****, it burned oil, the brakes sucked, the body was so thin that even road gravel dented it. It leaked, the drivers window fell out, the back bumber fell off(right in front of a police car), the gas tank runsted through. All well before 70k. It was a california car so there is no exscuse for the rust.

Got crappy gas milage as well.

I fail to see how this was any better then an american truck of the late seventies. Hell I have buddies with Chevy trucks from that erra, that where way better.

Hell I can't even find a pic online, lol more proof of the crappyness.

Hey GTO, I owned a Toyota HiLux, I think it was a 1972.  I drove it during college, and I kept it for about 4 years after I graduated. Only sold it when I moved to the middle east in 1982.  It served me very well.

LOL maybe mine was just a lemon, but it was a POS trust me.

How can you forgive a car made out of used beer cans left over from WW2, when it drops its rear bumper in front of a cop car?

They pulled me over "HAHAHA you left something back there, you better go get it"

Then they drove off laughing.

True.

I'd also have to put the Mustang II on the list.  Ford should be fined for brutalizing the mustang name like that.  The Subaru Brat would also get my vote.

My mother was an administrator at a clinic and I had a summer job at 16 driving the Chevette to x3 branch offices to drop off medical records and lab work, etc. (a 70 mile round trip) twice a day. I was a fresh, wild driver, but the Chevette prevented me from doing any damage.

I did beat it pretty hard, but even that didn't offer too much fun. Pedal to the floor, no excitement there. Push the shifts to the redline, what's the point? Get it up to 70 -- vibrates and shakes too much for even an invincible 16 year old to feel comfortable. Sweep hard into a turn -- no thank you. Wet roads -- fine as loing as you kept it in the envelope.

No AC, so it was uncomfortable in mid summer. No FM, so my music choices were limited to rotations that included Hall and Oates about every third song (1981 soft rock).

My mother had a Toyota corolla "wagon" of the era that was pretty basic, but not that basic and much smoother on the highway.

Gofaster, I agree about the accord. I hit 100k with it and only had some rust and the usual CV joint/split boot type of stuff.

Anyone else notice how the author explained the Edsel's styling problems by billing it as the "Pontiac Aztek of the 1950s"?

after all these years, I finally understand.
