Title: Music in the background?
Post by: lasersailor184 on January 27, 2004, 02:22:34 PM
How would I set it up so that music can run in the background?  Which programs are preferable?

lastly, How much of a hit will my performance take?

You Alt-tab out - hit play on your music player.

You alt-tab back in.. And fly!

if you use an MP3 player you can have either music or in-game audio, not both. This is because of how DirectX handles audio. The best thing to do is burn a CD of a few choice tunes and have that playing while you fly. Both the CD and the in-game audio will play. Since the CDROM drive has a direct line to the sound card it won't cut out the in-game sound.

Next time you buy a new keyboard take a "multimedia keyboard"; I got Logitech's and it works well. You can skip songs, change volume, pause etc without alt-tabbing.

I use musicmatch jukebox to listen to music while flying and have had no troubles.

Also I'll second the keyboard buttons, it's great to be able to pause the music to talk to someone or if you need to hear the game better.

With a SB Live!, and Audigy too I presume, cards - MP3, in game audio and VOX will all work at the same time.

I'm using wwiiol, teamspeak and musicmatch jukebox at same time without any problems with SB-Audigy. It's nice to have a pause button for music when you need to hear what happens around.

Really, Wolfie? Damn. Looks like a new sound card is on my shopping list. I'd always thought you couldn't do that because of the way directX handles audio.

Oh, and yes you can have background apps running while playing AH. As long as they don't access the net (or you're in the tower), and your system has enough horsepower, there won't be a problem.

Based on my very little experience writing DirectX apps, I've been unable to get two different processes to use the DX interface (i.e., DirectSound) to play sounds (i.e., wav files).  Basically, if your process' window is not the active window, it can't write to the sound buffer. (DirectMusic MIDI doesn't present the same problem, however.)

It is no problem, however, to use the normal Windows SDK multimedia interface (e.g., PlaySound).  For example, I've written a little app that sits in the background and responds to commands that I send from my HOTAS to play wav files that I've recorded (e.g., me saying "guns selected," "cannons selected," "gear down," "flaps down," "stick sensitivity dogfight," etc.).  If I leave the app running in the background when I play AH, it plays the .wav files with no noticeable affect on AH or the sounds it creates.  Also, I listen to Winamp often when playing AH with no problems at all.
