UNDERGROUND DIRECT ACTION TOTALS FOR 2003 - 01/13/04
[Note: This Report was compiled by the Earth Liberation Front Press Office . The 2003 report differs from years past in that it does *not* report on unclaimed actions as previous reports have done. This makes it appear as though damage totals have decreased when compared to totals arrived at last year factoring in unclaimed actions.]
There were 75 illegal direct actions taken in North America in 2003, an increase of 8% over claimed illegal direct actions taken in 2002. Animal liberation actions comprised just under 50%, or 37 actions, while 38 actions were committed for a combination of earth liberation, anti-GMO, anti-SUV, anti-development, anti-war and other reasons.
(Earth liberation actions include those taken against forest destruction, new developments, SUVs, gmo crops and research, police and military, globalization, and other reasons.)
The Animal Liberation Front took action on 18 occasions, the same number as in 2002. The Earth Liberation Front took action on 13 occasions, mirroring the number of actions of 2002. Other groups claiming actions included the Revolutionary Cells - Animal Liberation Brigade, Direct Action Front, The Frogs, and the Vegan Dumpster Militia. Several actions were additionally claimed by anonymous groups.
What did increase dramatically in 2003 were overall damage totals as a result of direct action. The Earth Liberation Front alone caused upwards of $55 million dollars in damages in a series of anti-development and SUV dealership attacks that captured headlines across North America. It is likely that damage totals in 2003 were close to $60 million, though the exact figure is difficult to determine.
The following is a list of all animal and earth related actions carried out and claimed in 2003.
(Note: HLS-related - means the actions was related to the ongoing campaign against Huntingdon Life Sciences - there were 21 such actions in 2003)

I wonder if these people consider themselves to be terrorists???
Pipe bombs, inceraries, sabotage... sounds like the definition of a terrorist to me. Would the patriotic act apply to them???
what a bunch of idiots...

Just makes me want to beat these people even more. I feel sorry for the people that do this. They must be so distorted.

Explain your comment more please.

I respect the right to free enterprise and other such ideals that make our country so competitive economically, but at some point, there needs to be some defense for our natural world. I find the smashing of houses and cars a little distasteful, but I can't say I disagree completely with the anti-corporate or anti-sprawl (Walmart, luxury apartments) actions. I'm not sure if its helping the terrorist's cause, however. Just like blowing up a bus of Israelis doesn't help either side, neither do these 'incidents'. A medium needs to be found, even though something tells me that won't happen for ages.
Don't interpret me as some kind of hippie though. However, I do love the book "The Lorax".

isn't this the one where the tree huggers opened all of the cages that the minks were in, not knowing that they were separated for a reason.... When the Minks got out, they killed each other. only a little over a 1000 lived, and none made it out of the mink farm.
-
"I find the smashing of houses and cars a little distasteful"
Well, I find smaching these people on the head with a nightstick a little 'distasteful' as well, so I guess we can have a 'Group Hug' when there caught.
-
Whatever you think. That's what's important to you.

No. They released them and they had no food. So they started roaming in packs and completely destroying livestock and wild animals. They even attacked people.
-
That's actually pretty funny in a bad sort of way.
-
Minks caged is not natural
Minks killing each other and everything else due being hungryis natural :D
Would someone please explain me is it natural to have 10,000 minks in a farm sized area...
-
I thought ELF stood for Erisian Liberation Front?
-
I'd love to see the feds get medieval on these ****wits.
-
Off topic..but...
Remember the show "Taxi"? Tony Danza's character bought himself a bunch of minks to get into the fur business. He then made the comment "I can't wait until they start shedding." (so he could make some money).
:D
These people are just as stupid.
-
Aren't these the same people that broke into the lab with the infected monkeys and let loose that virus that turned like 99% of England into zombies or something, it was late and I don't remember much from that documentary film...
-
28 days?
-
the funny thing is that the destructing they do dosen't really stop anything, it just makes more business for the corporations that they hate. well ok , it's not "funny" , it's pathetic, misguided, etc.
-
This might not be a completely apt analogy, but think of John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry in 1859. "His were the errors of a fanatic, not the crimes of a felon."
These people are like really really premature John Browns.

I mean.. is it natural to have the minks going around *freely*.
reason being: minks doesn't live well together in a small area, especially without sufficient food. -> something which isnt natural, since nature tends to fix it by having minks kill each others, therefore you won't see that in the real nature!

Authorities release suspect in SUV arson at West Covina dealership
Associated Press/September 16, 2003
West Covina, Calif. -- A 25-year-old man arrested last week for allegedly starting a fire that caused $1 million in damage to a Hummer dealership was released after authorities said they had insufficient evidence to charge him.
Joshua Thomas Connole, of Pomona, was freed Monday about 4:30 p.m. from the lockup at the West Covina Police Department, said sheriff's Deputy David Cervantes. Connole was arrested at his home Friday by federal agents and initially booked for investigation of felony arson and vandalism.
West Covina police Cpl. Rudy Lopez said the case against Connole, who still remains a suspect, could not be presented to prosecutors within the required 48-hour period.
"Once we put all the evidence together, we will file at a later day," Lopez said. "We still consider him a player in this incident."
Connole maintained his innocence after his release.
"The FBI was doing everything they could to intimidate me," he said, and to make him "confess to something I didn't do."
Fires that broke out Aug. 22 gutted a parts warehouse and destroyed 20 Hummer H2 sport utility vehicles at a West Covina dealership. Another 20 Hummers and several Chevrolet Tahoe SUVs were significantly damaged by fire and spray-painting.
Three other dealerships and at least four privately owned vehicles in the area also were damaged during the vandalism spree.
Words such as "ELF," "Fat, Lazy Americans" and "I (heart) pollution" were painted on the SUVs. "ELF" stands for Earth Liberation Front, a loose association of militant environmentalists. The group, which previously has taken responsibility for other acts of arson and vandalism, claimed in an unsigned e-mail that the SUV fires were "ELF actions."
After the arson and vandalism spree, the FBI released surveillance video from a Ford dealership in Duarte that showed two young men spray-painting SUVS.
Connole, who is a member of a solar-powered cooperative home dedicated to peace and environmentalism, said he has seen the video and denied involvement in the vandalism.
"How can anyone think that was me?" he asked, referring to one young man seen in the video. "The guy had Nike shoes on. I would never wear Nike shoes."
-
you know who pays for that damage? YOUR insurance companys, and you know who pays YOUR insurance company?....YOU
-
I don't get the point of many animal rights causes. They have their priorities wrong if you ask me. While conservation and anti-pollution practices should be enforced by law, campaigning at the way animals are treated in other countries is particularly annoying. Especially when so many people die every day across the world from stupidly preventable diseases or from lack of having clean drinking water.
-
Which is why you don't see too many Rwandan ALF members, but swarms of young white rebellious suburban kids.
-
ELF sets fire to two luxury homes in a Macomb County housing development in an action against urban sprawl. Damages estimated at $700,000.
Wouldn't it have been more effective to petition the local government to purchase the land and turn it into a park?
Or, start a grassroots movement to reduce the number of permits issued for clearing land for new construction (thereby increasing the value of land that has already been developed)?

Good for them. I hate the contracts negotiators for Deloitte and Touche.

Too rational, too sensible, too effective. Any moron can set fire to something - stringing a sentences together for a pressure group is a little more difficult. The una-brows who are part of this ELF group would be clearly failed football hooligans if British.

Nobody even thinks about the people who put money into these buildings to build them in the first place. Or the time. Or the effort.

Exactly. I'd like to see more older buildings saved and renovated. Savannah and Charleston construction in renovation is a good business. They've started to do something similar here, turning old brick cigar factories into office complexes and loft apartments.
Burning down a mansion is just wrong. A good building can be a work of art.
Instead of destroying, the activists should be creating. Stem the sprawl by re-directing construction to urban areas.
This was one of the first mansions in Charleston and is now one of its crown jewels of architecture. It was built in 1803 and over time it became derelict property and was almost razed. A gas station was built on the front lawn. The structure you see to the left was the office (if you visit, you can still see where the gas station sign was bolted onto the doorway). It was one of the first homes "saved" by the local historical society and after extensive renovation it is now part of the Charleston Museum collection.
Read more about it here (http://www.charlestonmuseum.org/manigault.asp).

Grr... seeing something like that posted by Montezuma, makes think someones should be convicted as some level of terrorist rather than as an arsenist or so....
I just wonder whats going on in their minds when they for example release minks and other such animals from the cages into the wild life, saying they were freeing the poor caged animals..... meanwhile dangering the NATURE around the facility by releasing animals there which does NOT belong there and definately NOT in such big masses - then kills the naturally existing animals in the area.
Authorities have hands full of job trying to catch those before the damage is done.
Best thing is - the animals they free up, would be usually dead anyway within a year in the surrounding nature - unfit.
-
those are the people who think that white stuff coming out of a pulp mill isnt steam and its damaging a national park upwind over 40 km away...or that bears and mountain goats cant adapt to a strip mine...and wont get a damn good plot of realestate once the reclamation is in progress...
what a bunch of morons
