I know we all have our favorite rides. And just like some men prefer Blondes over Brunettes...opinions vary on looks of aircraft also. So...my selections below.
Best Looking Fighters or WW2: I have two...Spitfire and the P40. Both are pleasing to the eye. And when one first sees the P40 it is immediately identified as a fighter. Nothing wears the Sharkmouth better then the P40. Which by the way was made until 1944! Flew in every Theater of Combat.
Best Looking Medium Bomber: Ju88 I know I know looks like a Greenhouse...but to my eye the most pleasing.
Best Looking Heavy Bomber: Hands down B17...no contest.
OK ...flame away and question my eyesight! ;)

A little off topic. I remember reading about a problems with the twin mustang, it had something to do with the pilot being so far away from the center of gravity, and excessive g forces he felt because of it. Can anyone enlighten me on this ?

Actually, the best looking plane now is named after one of our favorite planes that can take quite a beating.
That's right! Thunderbolt 2! A10 "Warthog". They come no prettier.
-
I'm always torn with this question...
In the "Say, that's a sexy airplane" catagory, I'd say Spitfire
But in the "Im going to ****ing kill you" catagory, I'm going with the FW-190. That's the most sublime of all designs in my opinion.

Yeah, Artik, that Mirage IIIC is definitely a classic creature of beauty. All-time prettiest? Might be.
Then again, other contenders include the British Vulcan and Victor bombers.

Finally! I found F2G Super Corsair
(http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/Fea1/001-100/Fea048_F2G-Corsair_Williams/images%20Part%204/035_.jpg)
I have to say that this number 9 is missing because some false report that this plane been crash at Akron-Canton airport in December 12, 1945 and guess what? It was false report and someone who was a test pilot, that he was telling that number 9 was in "Top Secret." I dont think this aircraft was never see again lol.

Hrm, in game planes?
Fighter, I'd have to say P-38. No doubt Kelly Johnson had a real knack for combining form and function. I think the fact that 3 of his 4 most famous aricraft designs have been shown in this thread (P-38, F104, SR-71 & U-2) attests to that.
Med Bomber? that's a tough one, can I say mosquito? love that plane.
Heavy, B-17 no question.
Best plane of the 60's F-105 Superchief. With the 104 being a close second.
I've always liked the look of the F-15, I could be a bit biased there, because we were stationed at Luke AFB when the Eagle's were first coming into operational duty....my borthers and I would bike as close to the runway as we were allowed, and sit there with our cameras. About 1 in 3 takeoffs would be a max performance climb out....sweet. :D
I dunno, if it flies, I love it. :aok
Cheers,
Spitter
It's good to make friends, even if you have to shoot them out of the sky sometimes.

Best looking aircraft ever:
Best looking prop plane? A much more difficult proposition. 51b, P-40, Corsair, some of the Yaks, the Macchi's that we have in AH, Fiat G55, they're all beautiful.
Ugly? Anything with a radial engine that's not a Corsair.
-
Best looking aircraft ever? Would have given the following answer since I was 7 or 8 years old :
Lockheed F-104 Starfighter.
Saw them high up almost dailiy when I was in elementary school, saw a few retired ones in museums and even saw the last ones still flying a few years ago in Italy.
If any design says 'speed' this must be it.

F-18 for modern fighter

RacrX (Nice handle BTW) - Yeah, I took my first trip to the Smithsonian in the mid 90's specifically to see the 262. Spent 2 days at the Garber Restoration Facility as well (they've got a Kikka hanging from the ceiling of one of the buildings.). It was even more amazing than the Air & Space Museum itself. One of the highlights of my airplane loving life has been the trip to the Texas Airplane Factory during the 1998 Warbirds Con and checking out their replica 262s.
SixxGunn - To each his own, but "Ugh." That thing looks horrid. That little bitty skinny mouth just doesn't look right. Shouldn't be a sharks mouth on anything but a P-40 (and the motorcycle I'm painting this spring. :) )
-
I gotta love my F4U-1A....The paint scheme and all specifically for "The Jolly Rogers"

Also the 262 and the A-10 but most of all I have always loved seeing F-4 Phantoms and hearing them scream by overhead.

I have a cd of "Black 6" that was made after it was first restored and flown. It has start-up, run-up, taxi, take-off, flight, ect outside the plane and then recordings of cockpit sounds during the same flight. It also has about 15 min talk about the known history, restoration ect of the plane. At the time it was the only Bf-109 currently flight worthy in the world. I know someone was restoring an E model for flight during the perioud though.
A year or so after I bought this cd I saw in the news that the plane was crashed. I think it was ground-looped if I remember right, maybe not. Anyhow I heard it was going to be re-restored and put up in a museum not to be flown again. Grunhertz is the first person I've seen mention the plane since then.
If I can dig up the cd and someone wants a copy let me know. Someone in my squad ripped it and used the flight files for FB and AH sounds.

Ahh. He did discover the landing gear in the design. Although he did the rabbit-ear fold wrong -- you take them all the way to the point at the front of the plane. And you don't cut off any paper at the rear; that's all wing surface. You just make the wingtip folds a little further in, with the rear angled a little in, so you get a venturi effect, then fold them in half back out, which gives you a built-in elevator compensation.
Back in high school, with a throw from a basketball court, I lost one of those over an auditorium that was more than 100 yards away; it was airborne for at least two minutes before we lost sight of it.
