 put armor on the wings and tail of the 109. Im sure the damage model is correct. I just want to know how they kept the thing in the air, with 1/4in. steel covering the whole plane.

they glued little sparrows all over the plane, so when they all flew, it helped keep the plane up.

Sparrows?  I heard it was little balloons of hydrogen inside, between the spars.

I was wondering that too Easymo and i might get to find out, cause if the weather holds up, Bongo, Tomdav and I are going to fly out to the Tillamook Air Museum here in Oregon on Sunday and i hear they have a 109 AND a Spitfire  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I was there about 4 years ago Mars, they didn't have one then.  (They had a nice F4u-4  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) )

Among the planes I remember being there:  P38-J, B25, Cargo varient of B29, F4u, many others.  I'm sure you will enjoy yourself.

(You must only live a few miles from me, I live in Veneta.  Others I know of that live around here are PaintMAW and Tom24.)

Hola,

Armour placement during the WWII was rather crude, normally just bolted on over areas that required protection. The plate itself was made of various heat treated and tempered material, shaped first, then processed to toughen it up. The Duraluminum (skin) was not very thick, so it tended to just have holes punched in it unless something hard was hit, then it got messy.

One of the best examples was later on, in the Skyraider, it had huge plates bolted on the bottom of the aircraft. I still am not sure how the Skyraider even flew the way they loaded the thing, Ed H. was a brilliant designer.

If N1K2 ever amazed american pilots with its toughness, I am very amazed.
It takes more hits than P-47, which I *thought* to be tough.
Few MG hits in wing and byebye for P-47, but N1K2 keeps flying even after cannon hits in wing.

Spitfires are either tough or easy to shoot down.
Weakest spot of Spitfrie is horizontal stab - if you hit it, it will go down probably with just one 20mm hit.
It's fuselage / wing areas are horribly strong. (wing toughness comparable to P-47s.. AH ones)

I don't see much trouble downing 109s.
Engine usually starts smoking after hit or two  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) (and you know that smoking 109 is shortly finished 109, unlike many other planes)

They had a 109 but the spanish one not a german one (Buchon?) and a trainer spit.
The spit is well..  UGLY.
It's a wierd Mk number and it's got the ugliest bubble hood over top the canopy you ever saw.

They have a P-38, a P-51 and a B-25 mitchell. I have dozens of pictures  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) Also the F4u-4 that Bloom mentioned and an amazing collection of old helicopters.
IIRC there was a Hellcat there too.
