Did US and Japanese had support ships (cruisers and destroyers) close to their CVs on the carrier battle over the Coral sea in may 7-8, '42?

I'm sure they did. Destroyers had to be close to provide protection against submarine and destroyer attack, and cruisers against other surfaces vessels, and all would provide additional anti-aircraft fire.
