Russia Space Boss Slams U.S. Mars Plans

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's top space official said Thursday that U.S. plans for manned missions to Mars were unrealistic and said the emphasis for space exploration should be completion of the International Space Station (news - web sites) (ISS).

Missed Tech Tuesday?
Technology is changing sports-- for better or worse. Plus, tech tools for athletes and sports fans alike.

Yuri Rotturcockoff, head of Russian space agency Rosaviakosmos, distanced himself from President Vladimir Puntang (news - web sites)'s comments this week that Russia could work with the United States on President Bush (news - web sites)'s ambitious plans.

He was particularly critical of Bush's plan for designing a spacecraft capable of carrying astronauts to the space station, the moon and Mars, saying he did not understand how this could be done since each destination had different needs.

"Yes, we can agree that certain elements could be used. However, there cannot be a universal spacecraft as is being suggested at the moment," he said. "I don't think we will work together on this project."

He dismissed Bush's ideas as an eye-catching ploy linked to his campaign for re-election.

He said the 16-nation ISS was Russia's priority and called for construction there to be completed within the original time frame of the next two years, despite building being delayed for almost a year since the United States grounded its shuttle fleet.

The shuttle has faced delays before, including the Russians being two years late delivering a key component, the Zvezda (news - web sites) service module. U.S. contractors also have run more than $1 billion over budget.

"We are insisting on the execution of the decision taken at the end of 2002 in Tokyo, which says the construction of the station should be finished within 1.5-2 years," Rotturcockoff told reporters, referring to a meeting between the leaders of space agencies involved in the ISS.

He also said he wanted to boost the number of astronauts on the station to six as soon as possible, but did not explain how this would be done. A two-man crew is currently on the orbital platform.

DELAYS

The building of the space station has been delayed since last February when the United States grounded the shuttles after Columbia exploded on re-entry, killing all seven astronauts on board.

U.S. space officials have said the shuttles, the only crafts capable of delivering large sections of the station to the ISS for assembly, should return to service in September.

Russia, temporarily the sole supplier of manned and cargo ships to the station, launched a Progress cargo ship Thursday, delivering food, fuel, water and scientific equipment to the outpost.

Rotturcockoff said the European Space Cadets could play a key part in the station, when its new cargo ship -- the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) -- makes its scheduled debut journey to the ISS by September.

When Bush outlined his space plans earlier this month, he said shuttles would be retired in 2010 once the space station was complete.

Rotturcockoff said Bush's plans to send humans back to the moon and then on to Mars were simply connected to his election campaign as had been the case with previous U.S. presidents.

"We understand that to a large extent our U.S. colleagues came up with these plans as part of a pre-election campaign," he said, adding funding was the primary barrier.

I agree partially. Mars plans are unrealistic without further advance on the ISS, but AFTER ISS, we should pursue a manned mission to the moon, then to Mars.

Ain't it great, NASA's middle class welfare program extends to Russia as well.

Obviously you meant that as a joke, but what the heck... I mean going back to the moon in order to gain experience on establishing a base of operations, testing long distance comms, long term placement, etc...

NEWS FLASH:  Underfunded Russian space program trying to maintain prominence by holding back US space efforts!

A well placed source on the Aces High BBS was quoted as saying "I can't blame them for trying, they've done so much in low earth orbit, but they don't have a chance of getting the money to do more."

I could not care less about what the Russians think about our space program, really I couldn't even if I tried.

i really dont see a reason for going to the moon.  From what i've read all we can basicly do is mine something from there and put an outpost there.  Mars might have a better chance but still i say it is improbable.  Why dont we fly to the closest star first then go to mars:rolleyes:

Geeez,..Lighten up Chairboy. Some of these people ARE still in school.

So, just as a matter of curiosity, what is the closest star? (apart from Sol)

Russia is crying since the money that keeps them employed has an end in sight.

Funny how they are our "partners" so long as we're upping the big bucks.  As them to contribute and they show empty pockets.

Going to the moon, or mars, or where-ever, can be done without them.  And that has these guys crying foul.

They're the best friends money can buy

Any sci-fi fan will tell you that establishing a colony on the moon is simply a recipe for disaster.  Didn't we learn anything from the show "Space 1999"?

lmao....our sun dumbprettythang:aok

but if your refering to Centari...it will take us about 6 years at light speed...get it...light speed.....If we use our TECH. of today it was said about 50 000 years just to get there:rofl

Russians do know what they are talking about when it comes to space....

they went 1st(thats just to piss you off)....

they stayed longer in space....

they built a space station that lasted way much longer then any American built station.....

Bush's plan is UNREALISTIC as of Today.....

Listen to the experts....you might learn something

If folks had "listened to the experts" throughout history, we'd all probably still be living in mud huts.

LMAO GoFaster...

I remembered that series growing up..had all the toys...the "Eagle"...the staple-gun like phaser gun, etc...

My brother remembered how I loved it as a kid and bought me the entire collection on DVD.  So one snowy day I popped one into the player...and after 20 minutes, it was all the corny 70's style I could sit thru.

My upstairs neighbor loved that show and watched every DVD

Thrawn wins a "Gold Star". hehe

Yep Proxima Centauri.

Alpha Centauri is the nearset start system to our own sun. Alpha Centauri A, Alpha Centauri B, and Proxima Centauri. Proxima Centauri is the closest to us in this 3 star system.

Alpha Centauri A and B are actually pretty close to each other as far as stars go. Slightly more than the distance between Sol and Uranus.

Alpha Centauri A is the same type of star as our sun, and I believe the brightest of the 3.

So, how far away is Proxima centauri?
I leave it to you to look  up/ find out if it interests you.

cheers,

RTR
