Title: Need help with wireless network
Post by: BlckMgk on January 30, 2004, 03:32:16 PM
Hey folks just installed a wireless network, but having problems with signal strength on other side of my house, how can i boost the signal so I can get it for the entire house? Are there atennas or amplifier, or relay stations I can use? And how much time/difficulty/cost am I looking at for one of these?

Thanks in advance folks..

BlckMgk what kind of adapters are you using?  I put a card in my mom's computer, it had a little weeny antenna hanging out the back of the PC.  Problem was the case of the PC actually blocked the signal.  So I bought a remote antenna with a long cable, unscrewed the original antenna, screwed in the remote antenna, and set it on top of her computer table's bookshelf.  Totally fixed the problem.

Most US Wireless adapters are nerfed due to FCC regs, search around for 350ma adapter, Cisco does them. Check out if your wireless access point has international firmware options as well, these might run it at high output levels.

Check out internal omnidirectional antennaes, might help too.

BTW, you do realize wireless networks are for the most part totally unsecure (unless you use something like a Sonicwall TZW).
