You might try the "Merge Clouds" effect. That looks pretty cool. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Nice work. When Wabbit and I put together our book, "Echoes: an Anthology of WarBirds Fiction," I illustrated each short story with doctored screenshots. We actually set up on-line photo sessions to recreate the aerial scenes to support the stories. I then used a number of different editing programs to add film grain, motion-blurring, and edge smoothing. Finally, I created a border that made the pics look like an old-time photograph, complete with those little triangular tabs that photo albums used to hold the piture in place.
By the way, if you're interested, Burbank's Books still has copies of the book for sale, at http://www.senet.com.au/~mhyde/burbanks_books.htm (http://www.senet.com.au/~mhyde/burbanks_books.htm) .

A bit off topic, but Burbank's books (mentioned above) has some really cool WWII era books. Mostly about the war in the southern Pacific (Australia, New Guinea, etc.). The books are long out of print, but Burbank has the rights to the material and does a nice job at short run paperbacks. Some great first person accounts of the war.
