I am using GIMP now to edit skins; however, I cannot use any of the "fancy" tools like airbrush, blur, smudge, blend, etc.  Why?

when i try to use blend it also says "invalid for indexed images"-what is an indexed image?  Can the skins being an "indexed image" have something to do with it?

They absolutely can... 'indexed" means 256-colors. All of those brush and airbrush and gradient tools require a full 24-bit palette. The first thing you should ever do when skinning is to change the file up to RGB mode (or 24-bit).

Conversely, when the skin is ready, you will need to change it back down to Indexed Color... but do it on a copy; always keep a 24-bit master.

Ace, ya got a handy URL for GIMP? I'd like to download it, so I can better advise on its use.

Ideally, you should upgrade to Windows 2000 or newer. Otherwise, you can install The Gimp on Win9x/ME anyway, but don't complain if something doesn't work as expected, unless you're ready to fix the code yourself.  

grrrrr.

guess its usless to even try huh? (runnin win98 dont have the money for XP and im not going to use a "hacked" version)

Dux is right.

The best way to use Gimp is on a linux box btw. Thats what it was originaly written for anyway. :cool:
