I saw it. I mentioned it in the thread where I talked about Horatio Hornblower. I'm hoping there's a sequel. With good reviews of the first film and since they have all the scenery completed and the tank constructed already, I would think the possibility of there being a sequel would be quite good.

Loved the books, loved the movie.

Pongo: Loved the books, loved the movie.
Did they really replace an american enemy with a french one in the movie?

Mixed feelings about it. The period sure left room for plenty of interesting stuff. Those ships are kickass. The worst was pry the stabs at humor. Best was showing the effects of cannons, (I’d a shat meself for sure and just went to port for rum supplies.) Thing is, there was a lot of camera work during the battles that was purposely erratic and jumbled, pry to convey the chaos of the battle, but I got the feeling it was more to save a PG13 rating and hide the inevitable R gore. I mean the sword fighting was one huge blurry mess. Bummer.
One thing about the theater rather then renting is the sound system was pretty good during the cannon shots that’s for sure.
It's worth $5.50.

I asked the question before but no-one responded. Is the movie based on the book by Patrick O'Brian? I looked at the web site and the story takes place in the Atlantic/Pacific in the movie, but most of the action was in the Med in the book.
Different ship too...in the book Aubrey is Master and Commander of The Sophie, in the movie I see the ship is called The Sunrise.
What am I missing here?

Curval, afaik they amalgamated the plot from Master and Commander with The Far Side of the World. Why, I don't know.
Miko, in the book The Far Side of the World the enemy was an American frigate, in the film it was French.

Lefty was the coolest 12-yr old Ninja Boarding Assassin ever.

Right... Otherwise it would not be politically correct. :)

Don't see the movie. Boring. Only good thing were the battle scenes--otherwise it lacked any interest whatsoever.

Creamo, bust open that wallet and buy a new surround sound for your DVD. $200 or less you too can have Dolby THX (without the crying babies or the a**holes talking behind you).

Maybe. I’m no audiophile.
I did buy awhile back, a Denon AVR-1603 pry cause it was new and pretty cheap for how it sounds, and MiniT said Denon was good. Seems to work fine. It blew a Energy speaker though where the pos Aiwa amp didn't.
I don’t get what all the surround sound modes are, but THX must be fancy? This amp does not do that as far as I know. I just thought a big theater produces some great sounds you can’t get in a living room due to it’s size, and I usually see the big epic type films in the theater for that and a few other reasons. I know Private Ryan is awesome in my living room, but having bullets go 200 feet past you in a theater was a experience. It sold me on action movies in a theater for life. Plus I think there is some strange drugs in the movie popcorn butter. It's better than a drink to me and that says alot.

I've read the Horatio Hornblower books, and have just started reading the O'Brian books. I'm really enjoying it. Amazing to think the Royal Navy was so powerful in those days. Sad that 70% of the British public have no real knowledge of the history of the period.
Haven't seen the film yet and they aren't showing it in the cinemas anymore. Will definitely buy the DVD.

I saw M&C and The last Samauria the same day..I thought M&C was ok..TLS was better.

Actually, its the "Surprise", I believe. And yes, its a compilation of two books. This is good and bad. Its good in that you can watch the movie without ruining an appreciation of the books, since the storylines are somewhat different. Its bad in that M&C fans expecting a faithful reproduction of the book end up with something they weren't expecting. But hey, the movie is good on its own merits.

Take a read of "Life Before The Mast", which is a compilation of 22 memoirs of sailors who fought in the Age of Sail. It covers some very exciting action, including mutinies, whippings, pirating, and close-quarters action.
I bought my copy at Barnes and Noble for just under $7 (USD) today at lunch and gave it a quick scan. Looks like it could be an early start to my Summer reading.

Gofaster..I will pick up a copy, thanks.
One of the reasons I like the whole "Age of Sail" genre results from some experiences I had in boarding school in England. (No not "those experiences ;) ).
The school was very strict. Talk when you weren't supposed to...meant the cane. Do "anything" you weren't supposed to do...meant the cane. I got caned alot.
But, we had one teacher who suffered from the early stages of Parkinson's diease. He was a former merchant marine and was the strictest disciplinarian in the whole school. His illness meant he was not allowed to hit any kids with a cane, as if he missed and hit us on the back, for example, he could have done serious irrevocable damage. Instead he used a gymshoe or his hand.
He taught science classes and everyone DREADED them. He had one rule, for example, where he would look up, pick one student and ask them to repeat verbatim what he had just said. If the student couldn't do it he got a beating..either with the hand or with a gymshoe (sneaker). If he did it twice in one class and both students couldn't repeat what he said the whole class would be subjected to "dictation" where we had to write everything he said verbatim. He would then select at random any students who he deemed deserved it and would ask them to repeat what he said...no way you could, he talked too fast. Beatings all around when this happened.
Anyway...outside the science rooms was a huge poster all about the Age of Sail...focusing on the Battle of Trafalgar, conditions on board the ships, punnishments dished out and accounts of various battles.
I used to read it before every science class, mostly because I was pretty scared and I felt better knowing that at least I wasn't on board a British Navy ship in those times.

I guess the US public education system isn't so bad after all!
The death of Nelson is one of the accounts covered in the book, near the beginning. And the book gets better from there. Its a pretty thick book and with printface that's easy on the eyes. I do a lot of legal reading at my job so its nice to have a book that I can read without adding more strain.
Anyway, pick it up when you get a chance.

On second thought, maybe it's best that you can't have guns.
:p

IMO Master & Commander would have been a great deal better if they'd made it half an hour longer and had another battle in the middle.

Lol no kidding. I enjoyed this movie, but when I went to see it, there was this Geri behind me who kept saying stupid **** throughout the movie. The BEST part is when the French Ship comes into view flying the BIGGEST FRENCH FLAG EVAR!!!11!11 and the guy says

You never know, that guy was probably around when those ships were first-rate ships of the line. :D
